Downtown Chrstmas lghts are to be turned on today at 7 p.m., ncludng those on the ''Communty Chrstmas Tree" located on the Wood County Dstrct Publc Lbrary's front lawn, 251N. Man St. Ths s the frst year for the tree project and Floyd Craft, DA charman, hopes t wll become an annual event "We would lke to start a tradton that the communty could buld on," he sad. "We're hopng t becomes a bgger and better celebraton eachyear." Craft sad cty resdents are nvted to make or purchase decoratons for the tree. "Nobody's specfcally scheduled to come n yet. but that s the plan," sad Davd orer, an attorney for the Councl of Publc Workers. CPW represents employees at Oho State Unversty and Akron Unversty and polce at Kent State Unversty. Clercal workers at KSU are votng on whether to accept CPW representaton and the unon s dscussng representaton wth employees at the Unversty of Toledo, orer sad. The unon, a branch of the natonal Communcaton Workers of Amerca, represents between 9,000 and 10,000 publc employees n Oho, orer sad. CPW REPRESENTATVES from Toledo spoke to a group of about 50 classfed employees Sept. 12 after some employees contacted them, sad onne Lawrence, a Kohl Hall custodan. Lawrence, one of the employees, sad they were dssatsfed wth the 4.3 percent pay rases, compared wth rases averagng 8 percent for senor adrnnstrators, whch were approved Aug 23 by the oard of Trustees. The two leaders, who spent more than sx hours alone n prvate conversatons, agreed to hold a second summt next June n Washngton, and a thrd n Moscow n Reagan stopped n russels to bref NATO alles and then flew on to Washngton to address a Jont sesson of Congress. Hs message: that the superpowers are "headng n the rght drecton" toward mproved relatons. Gorbachev, summarzng the summt before brefng Warsaw Pact leaders n Prague, told reporters he and Reagan looked at one another "straght n the eye" durng a seres of talks - but could not wn an agreement to trade nuclear bomb cutbacks for an end to the Amercan "Star Wars" program. They pledged to accelerate the work of arms control negotators, but could not even agree on gudelnes for them. Each applauded the other's remarks and then wtnessed the sgnng of the new cultural exchange agreement that Reagan sad paved the way for the people-to-people exchanges be hopes wll lead to unproved understandng. ut they dd not dsguse the dfferences that reman, and both sdes made clear they are stll far apart on a jont approach to Reagan's Strategc Defense ntatve, the so-called Star Wars ant-mssle program. Callng for "early progress" n the talks, they endorsed "the prncple of 50-percent reductons n the nuclear arms of the Unted States and the USSR" and also for a separate nterm agreement on ntermedate nuclear weapons n Europe. t's About Tme! The bll, S.1739, the Home Audo Recordng Act, would mpose a sgnfcant royalty tax on audo recorders and blank tape for the beneft of copyrght owners. Fve percent of the prce of each audo recorder. 25 percent of the prce of dual audo cassette recorders and 1 cent per mnute of playng tme on all blank cassette tapes would be collected by the government and dstrbuted to copyrght owners. Numerous ptfalls plague the bll, whch was purportedly drafted n the nterests of ndvdual artsts (the sngers and songwrters who create the bulk of the country's musc). The bll does not ndcate how money would be dstrbuted to copyrght owners; t s left to the owners of the copyrghts to agree on dstrbuton. n all lkelhood the record labels - the bggest and the strongest of the copyrght owners - would beneft the most. The rch get rcher. n the probable event that copyrght owners would not come up wth an equtable dstrbuton among themselves, the federal government would be called upon to medate the parcelng. Even f dstrbuton were not a lkely problem, the government would assess rebates to users who could ndcate that recordng devces were not used for tapng musc: a federal agency, the Copyrght Royalty Trbunal, would be created to determne such exemptons. ureaucracy ncreases. Gone are the days when beleved that not eatng at least one balanced meal a day would result n death by lack of nutrton. 've managed to survve on about two square meals a month (eaten at home where go to recuperate from college lfe). Whle at school, anythng goes. f t's convenent to grab and easy to stuff down my throat n under ten mnutes, t falls nto the catagory of "meal." Coffee has become the staple for survval. 've ncknamed my new lfestyle the "DCDE det" - whch stands for "drnk coffee - don't eat." am begnnng to daydream about those pre-college days when my mother, wth her ferce maternal ways, would not let me leave the table untl the last of my meat and my vegatables was ngested. 'm begnnng to daydream about meat and vegatables! Wth my busy schedule and lack of tme-management ablty, the automat provdes my meals, when am lucky enough to have money, let alone the correct change. t's a smple Way of lfe - throwng n a quarter for a package of cheese crackers to eat en route to class or dashng nto the cafetera for yet another cup of coffee. For some reason, though, seem to lack energy. So to keep myself gong developed an addcton to chocolate. t takes at least one ht of some form of chocolate every couple of hours to keep me gong. My only hope to keep gong nvolves another "Unon-run" to grab more chocolate and a cup of coffee to wash t down. Then gult sets n. What knd of meal s that? s ths any knd of lfestyle? What am dong to my body? No wonaer am perpetually mononucleatc - don't sleep, don't eat, don't take care of myself! have zero energy! My skn s breakng out! My wastlne s pushng maxmum densty! look lke death! So, n tryng to rght these wrongs, started buyng mlk, cereal, bread, peanut butter and frut. There was a problem wth each of these. buy the frut n the cafetera and manage to eat all of t before reach my room. don't lke mlk, so t spols, don't lke whte bread, so t turns green, subsequently, the cereal and peanut butter are pretty useless. Next swtched to the nonpershables: nstant oatmeal, nstant soup, nstant coffee and anythng else that was quck and could be cooked n my dormroom. t seemed convenent and healther than my usual fare, even f t was only more nutrtous n small degrees. ut by the end of the second week, was all "oatmealed out." also hate to do dshes, so after three days 've depleted my bowl supply. ut coffee always tastes good and the mug can be used over and over. Whatever t s they want to be dong for a lvng (most of them don't specfy), they all want to be rch. What no student has ever answered, and probably never wll, s what myself am 10 years after startng college - a student. 'm sure the undergraduate students n the classes that teach are awe-struck at the noton of someone who s, gasp!, 30, stll beng n college. Who could possbly prefer all-nghters, dull classes and a lean paycheck, f any. to a shot at the job market and fnancal securty? All rght, 'll admt t. don't love everythng about college. n fact, there have been tmes durng my scholastc odyssey when thought about dumpng the whole thng. loathe the frenzed pace of the last week or two of the semester, when have three epers due at the same tme. the the pressure to keep pullng "A's as regularly as George rett hts.300. And 'm not wld about earnng a teachng fellow's salary that doesn't dsqualfy me from recevng free government cheese. Then why am stll here? College turned out to be a good place to dscover my strengths, all two of them, and to gan a lttle confdence. than once. ut do have an answer. 'm stll n college because, for one thng, have plenty more to leam about my chosen feld of study and about lfe n general. have plenty to learn about myself, too. And because the tme 've spent n college to date has been nelpf ul n makng that dscovery, can't help but thnk that t wll contnue to be so. College turned out to be a good place to dscover my strengths, all two of them, and to gan a lttle confdence. Much of the self-dscovery has come from havng the chance to Slay as many roles as Laurence lver. Durng my undergraduate days, sang lead n a fftes band ( used to have a tape of some of our performances, but thnk lost t, thank God), edted the college newspaper, revewed flms, and wrote and drected a one-act play. To be sure, one doesn't ve to be n college to be actve. ut had been out of school and n an offce, 'm sure wouldn't have had the chance to wear so many hats. Although 'd lke to contnue some of these endeavors when get nto the real world, or when become a fullfledged professor n the academc one, 'm sure ths versatlty wll stop. 'm also sure 'll mss t. y makng a habt of stayng n college. 've gradually made a habt of what college s supposed to be all about n the frst place. Some 2500 years ago a professonal thnker told hs students that the unexamned lfe s not worth lvng. n the envronment of the unversty, 've had the chance to examne a lot of thngs, and don't mean merely student exams durng the profcency week. Now, 'm not an expert at t. mnd you. There are plenty of tmes when you could offer me a penny for my thoughts and not get your money's worth. On the whole, though, 've found college to be a good place to learn how to leam. don't mean to mply that a college educaton s worthless f rntum mcrmx, muumsf-str... AASH p&ormy.. rrs mue...nesrwcr. OMT.- t doesn't contnue ad nfntum. My pont s that college s more than the years one puts n for hs or her degree. College s a state of mnd. To be a student s to be commtted to learnng, to vew knowledge as an end n tself. f ths atttude s dscarded at the end of four years along wth the unversty pennants and Madonna posters, then the state of mnd necessary to be a student was never really won although the dploma was. Dr. Frank aldanza was an example of a perpetual student. A professor n the Englsh department here at owlng Green, he had a reputaton for professonalsm among hs students and hs peers. One of hs students, who worked at the Jerome Lbrary, sad t was not unusual for her to see Dr. aldanza arrve there at 8 n the mornng and stll be there at 10 at nght. What was he dong? Research for hs classes - the ones he was teachng. For Dr. aldanza, a career as a professor dd not mean a long awated end to study, but a welcomed contnuaton of t. He ded last January, every bt as much of a student, and very lkely more so, as on the day he began hs college career as a freshman some 40 years ago. 4 Local G RAs needed next semester Md-year selecton not as detaled as sprng process by Patt Sknner stall reporter Resdent advsers are often expected to be a commandng and comfortng presence n resdence halls for the duraton of the school year, but some don't stay the entre year. Sx RAs are needed for the sprng semester. Most RAs are selected n the sprng for the followng year, but accordngto Paula Smth, charwoman of RA selecton, crcumstances sometmes arse that prevent RAs from fulfllng ther contracts. She sad extenuatng crcumstances such as a drop n grades, dsllusonment wth the job, student teachng or early gradua - ton can necesstate RA replacement. Carol embry, senor specal educaton major, s one of the RAs leavng at md-year. She sad she s leavng her poston because she needs to take extra classes to graduate on tme. " WAS an RA n Dunbar last year so knew what was gettng nto, but ddn't realze my class load would be so heavy, embry sad. ll Lannng, drector of resdence management, sad mdyear RA selecton s usually necessary every year, although students are told when they sgn up that they are expected to stay a full year. "We don't lke to lose anyone, but sometmes thngs come up... Thngs change,,t he sad. The md-year selecton process s not as detaled as the RA selecton n the sprng. Students fll out applcatons and go through formal ntervews wth hall drectors, but do not go through group processng. n group processng, RA applcants spend a weekend gong through exercses n problem solvng, self-dsclosure and other sklls needed for the job. Lannng sad durng the mdyear selecton there s not enough tme or personnel to set up a group-processng weekend. The applcatons for RAs for sprng semester are due Monday, and students applyng wll know before Chrstmas break f they got the job and where they wll be workng. New RAs wll have contracts only for the sprng semester. Lannng sad hs offce has gven out 40 applcatons for the sx jobs, a bgger response than was expected. He sad a lot of people have shown an nterest n the postons, and be doesn't expect to have any problems n fndng people for the jobs. Kenneth Clark, professor emertus of psychology at the Cty College of the Cty Unversty of New York, sad that because the Sovet Unon started the space race by launchng Sputnk, educatonal nsttutons began to emjhasze scence and rather than the tes to ad U.S. efforts to "get ahead." To survve n the nuclear age, people must be taught to accept and respect the humanty of all peoples, but nstead people are usng ther knowledge to compete, Clark sad. "That dfferences n color, relgon and deologes are beng used by educatonal nsttutons to justfy man's nhumanty to man s not new; t s just more threatenng n the nuclear age," Clark sad. " hope educaton can become a powerful nstrument n empathy, socal senstvty and constructve nteracton for human bengs." To explan the plot of "After Hours" any further would be pontless, snce too much happens to poor Paul. He meets one werd character after another n hs quest to get home, and through a bzarre seres of mshaps and msunderstandngs, fnds hs very lfe n danger. ut don't worry - t's all n good fun. Even Cheech and Chong make a bref appearance as two local theves. n the mdst of all these crazy people s Grffn Dunne. Dunne s the focus of the move (and co-producer) and the glue that holds t together. Whether enterng the punksh Club erln on Mohawk nght or beng chased by a mob of Soho vglantes n a Mr. Softy trunk, Dunne s up to to the challenge. As usual, Scorcese s a flm craftsman. Agnes, played by Kmberly Sergent, makes allusons to both a holy concepton and rape when speakng to psychatrst Dr. Martha Lvngstone (Melssa Ann MUlngton) about the loss of her vrgnty. As the play contnues, Agnes's experence becomes more engmatc. Her mother superor, Mother Mram Ruth (Robn Strechler), beleves n the goodness and nnocence of Agnes yet dscloses some nformaton about Agnes's past that later snowballs nto probable nsanty. From that pont on, the play hnges upon the possblty of mracles and the unseen power of God workng amdst a sometmes fathless and dsbelevng contemporary world. Despte a cast of only three and the use of scarce props, Agnes of God s an excellent producton. Sergent dsplayed a wde range of emotons and talent n her depcton of the torn and troubled Agnes. Glacal Lake Maumee flled and then dred over the next 10,000 years, leavng behnd the lack Swamp wth ts Oat, fertle plans scattered wth oak forests and crossed by meanderng streams. On the opposte sde of the state, the surface s not flat, the forests are a mxture of hardwoods and confers and the streams dance and tumble down to the Oho Rver. n western Hockng County, the scenery s especally breathtakng. The last area - the most accessble to handcapped persons-features Oho's largest recess cave. f the hermt nad traveled south fve more mles, he would have had a 700-feet wde lvng room wth a 90-feet rotunda. A small stream plunges over the edge of Ash Cave, addng to ts beauty. Those same settlers who called hemlocks "cedars" also named Ash Cave when they found abandoned pyres there. Just as the hermt and the settlers dscovered them, you too can fnd the Hockng Hlls. They offer a beauty and serenty that smply cannot be found n Northwest Oho. Once you've been there, you'll want to go back to smell the hemlocks, hear cold water splash over a clff and feel coarse lack Hand Sandstone underfoot.
