Dannie Joe - Lone appearance came here just over a year ago here vs. straight maidens; he raced wide and failed to make an impression that day, now Puype brings him back for a tag with a series of good local moves on his card. 3. Z Z Tiger - Has been making menacing noises in his 7 starts, showing the way to the opening quarter on each occasion but having to settle for minor awards, including an exacta completion from 2 attempts over this course; figures to clear early again if the firsters don t come out firing. 4. Terajoule - The other beginner; Lucky Pulpit has seen 9% of his new shooters land in the winner s circle while mom won her only start for 21K and is getting her first to the races; Gallagher isn t known for working them fast. 5. Perfect Portrait - A decent 3rd coming down the hill at SA in the April unveling, then was no factor in the next pair, including a 9-furlong lawn party when last seen in April; freshened by French while dropping into a seller for the first time with a modest Del Mar worktab and Elliott on the re-ride. 3. Mr. Esken -The only firster in the field lands the challenging rail slot; sire connects at 10% with newbies while mom won 18 of 76 for 709K and has seen both of her previous starters reach the circle; completed local preparations with a bullet 3 furlongs from the gate. 2. Derby Factor - Has had to settle nobbkes while making his most recent starts at this level; lone show finish from the 8 tries came here at least year s fall session here; a nice drill here last week but will have to pick up his game to get the job done. 3. Lion Command - Has had to be happy with 8 place and show finishes from his 15 trips to the post, with slow takeoffs hampering the case in 5 of the last 6 outings; a solid try two back over this layout during the summer stand, but came up empty in the most recent after another tardy takeoff during Del Mar. 4. Royal Seeker - Despite the fact that he has missed 25 previous opportunties, he looks like a serious threat to get over the hump vs. this group; wheels back 6 days after coming wide here and completing the exacta as the 9-5 choice, and it won t take much more than a repeat of that effort to get the job done with Pereira. 5. June Sixth - Speed and fade in the first start off a lengthy vacation here in July, then lost his best chance at the start 3 weeks ago at the seaside when he came away poorly and was checked; blinkers go on and could prove an elusive target with a clean start in a race that lacks speed. 6. Victor s Show - Only start came going a mile on the Santa Anita turf vs. straight maidens and he was forced wide on the first bend and retreated; lands a much easier spot for his 2nd attempt while leaving from the cozy outside box with Conner trying his hand. 5. Snaked - The 3rd start proved the charm, as the Knapp representative dropped to the bottom level at Del Mar in the first start in 10 months and came away when it counted after forcing the issue from the outside; figures to make a move forward with the race under her belt and a nice confidence builder; new best pal Espinoza is back at the controls. 2. Warm It Up - Finally put it all together in start No. 15 in June, gutting it out under Perdoza, following with a solid runner-up finish in the first start vs. winners here at the summer session; came up empty in the most recently when trying one of those abbreviated grass dashes at the seaside. 3. Belle Monte - Paid instant dividends in the first start off the Miller claim, which is nothing new, demolishing her 7 rivals for the diploma with Figueroa at the helm; easily earned the best figure in the field with that victory and looks strictly the one to beat right back in a spot where she is protected. 4. Demigoddess - A racing secretary s dream as she made 25 starts last year and is suiting for the 22nd time this season; just the lone tally on her card from 57 trips to the post with 4 show finishes from her 9 runs over this daytime oval; difficult to endorse. 5. Lemon Crush - Palma trainee has not been a factor in those last 2 mile runs on the Del Mar turf, but hasn t been beatean all that much and will be making her initial try in one of these starter affairs while turning back to dirt and 6 furlongs, which accounted for her June 2 maidenbreaker; major player with this group. 3. Grecian Fort - Still looking to work her way into the trifecta for the first time after 8 appearances; had a poor beginning when last seen under these conditons late last month at Del Mar and will have to find more to reach. 2. Pray for Corday - Making her first start beyond 6 furlongs with the blinkers coming off and Espinoza going back on; doesn t run them alike, but several of her sprints make her look pretty good in this line-up, including that runner-up when last seen over this layout back in June. 3. Princess Nicole - Most recent down at the seaside vs. this kind saw her once again playing the role of bystander; making 19th try and a slice is the best we can predict. 4. Curlina Curlina - Will be making her 30th stab at the brass ring, with all the recent attempts coming at this level; took a little tote action here opening week off a distant 2nd at Del Mar and was well beaten; obviously has to do better. 5. Stella Sweeper - Fired up the exacta when easily gaining the place spot at 89-1 when last seen at Del Mar 2 weeks ago under these exact conditions; lone start over this layout came sprinting in July and she figures to get a lot more respect at the windows this time around with Pena back at the controls. 6. Peachy - Like Pray for Corday, she will be trying a distance of ground for the first time and projects to be up close and personal from the outset with Gutierrez; shades come off and best effort to date came in her July debut here where she rallied for second money, rolling even 6th-place finishes in the 2 Del Mar tries in the interim. 5. Kim K - Expensive ($335,000) purchase in April was prominent early, but weakened late to finish fifth when 6-1 in debut 13 days ago. Moves inside and can do better with a race under her belt for productive owner-trainer combination. Keeps apprentice who tied for the riding title here during the Summer Thoroughbred Festival earlier in the year. 2. Square Peggy - Opened up sizable lead and went on to a 1 1/2 length score in second start one month ago. Race was flattered when runner-up Sneaking Out returned to break her maiden by more than 10 lengths Sept. 2 at Del Mar. Has worked well in the interim and is a major threat to go backto-back. 3. Shanghai Barbie - Chased the aforementioned Sneaking Out in her debut 13 days ago, splitting the field, but finishing 22 lengths behind the runaway winner when Hall of Fame trainer fares much better with experienced maidens than debuters, so improvement is possible, but she will havet to step up her game considerably to challenge for the top prize. 4. Derby Royalty - Back in six days after chasing heavilyfavored Pretty Hussar when 15-1 going shorter distance in $50,000 maiden affair for state breds. Figures to be outrun early and hasn t show a propensity to pass horses, so $8,000 yearling purchase would be a surprise. 5. Naughty Tiger - Bids for her third win in a row and second consecutive stakes score after capturing the CTBA a little over six weeks ago. Showed a new dimension in her latest when rallying from slightly off the pace and the versatility should serve her well in this spot. Strictly the one to defeat. 2. Square Peggy 5. Naughty Tiger 1. Dynamic Duo - Back with maidens as he returns six days after finishing seventh of eight when 88-1 against restricted claimers at this distance. Yet to hit the board and was far back at longer trip the last time he competed at this level. Pass. 2. Lucky Mesquite - Close early after starting slowly from the rail against tougher group when last seen seven weeks ago. Homebred has worked four times in the interim and should be a player in this context if he breaks alertly under his new rider. 3. Buck Duane - Goes for new connections after finishing third in his return after nearly eight months on the sidelines. Claimed for $20,000 from Steve Miyadi and was runner-up the last time he competed against state breds on New Year s Day. Player from close range and eligible to move forward in second off the bench. 4. Irish Ballad - Lost rider and was vanned off the track when -1 against $30,000 open maidens when last seen a little over two months ago. Capable of showing some speed, but $1,200 yearling purchase needs to work on his stamina. Longshot. 5. Raise the Gamble - Trailed in his debut for lower price tag when nearly 31-1 about 5 1/2 months ago. Rhettbutler, who graduated that day, returned to win locally Sept. 9 and this homebred has trained OK over thsi surface prepping for his comeback, including a 1:01 4/5 gate drill 10 mornings ago. 6. R Matineigh Idol - Sire is about 10% with his rookies and winless dam has had only one winner from seven prior foals. Schoenhardt - Down a peg after finishing ninth of 10 in Southern California debut when days ago. Hampered by lack of speed and is winless since defeating $40,000 maidens at Keeneland 11 months ago when trained by the late Hall of Famer Jack Van Berg. Winning stable in his corner, but tough to take off that last one. 2. Bourque - Showed the way then stopped to finish eighth of nine at this trip three weeks ago. Blanking so far in 2018, but did run second over this track during the Summer Thoroughbred Festival and trainer-jockey combination won with Lovely Linda here Sept Pioneerof the West - Drops in price after finishing fifth of seven 51 days ago. Hasn t hit the board in last eight starts and hasn t won since capturing a starter allowance at this distance May 21, 2016 in Arcadia. Could perk up with the drop for stable winning at an 18% rate this year. 4. Rolls Royce Deal - Checked in sixth when 15-1 in same race Schoenhardt exits and has only one exacta finish in six starts as a 4-year-old. Could make some late noise for trainer seeking his second win of We Go Now - Finished a neck behind dead heat winners Shirl s Ready and Kona Coast at this trip for higher price three weeks ago. Dispatched at 15-1 that afternoon, will be much shorter this time around and should be a major player from close range. 6. Harrovian - Draws outside after consecutive starts from the fence, the latest when fourth of 10 when days ago. Capable of improvement with the change in scenery as two of his three wins have come at this venue, including a 4 1/2 length romp last Nov. 30 when claimed for $8,000 from Simon Callaghan. 5. Secret Maneuver - Did the track-and-attack to perfection in last month s unveiling at Del Mar and the Desormeaux trainee came away when it counted; Espinoza deputizes for brother Kent today and this gal looms one of major players in this line-up from the inside slot. 2. Runninfromthelaw - Another member of the cast who hit paydirt at first asking, with her win coming over the Golden Gate tapeta 2 weeks ago; was bet down to 8-5 that day and did not dissapoint while earning a figure that makes her very competitive on the ship down. 3. Time for Suzzie - The only start over this unique oval resulted in a maidenbreaker for this filly during the summer session while earning a modest number in the process; a non-factor in a pair of Cal-bred stakes at Del Mar in the interim and can t endorse for more than a slice with this group. 4. Missmachupicchu - Made 2-1 look like an Xmas gift in that debut late last month at the seaside, making every pole a winning one and drawing off in the final stages; goes from one fine barn to another with Miller reaching in for her that day and comes back in this cozy protected spot. 5. Midnight Miracle - Turned some heads when she showed up for 32K last time after being taken from the debut for 80K, but crushed her 9 rivals going an abbreviated journey and there were no takers; that race got her eligible for this spot where they can t lose her and she deserves a lot of respect right back with Roman taking over. 6. Zip s Secret - Finally got her ducks in a row and recorded a diploma earner down south last month, opening up big time in the stretch at the slightly shorter trip; things don t figure to be anywhere as easy on the front end this time around, but she did get the best of the draw. 5. Gelding has worked sharply since for Hall of Fame trainer and figures to show speed, but lone dirt win came against maidens over a sloppy track last Dec. 7 at the Fair Grounds in New Orleans when trained by Mark Casse. 3. Jan s Reserve - Gelding failed to threaten when chasing repeater Mr Vargas when 8-1 four weeks ago. Lone exacta finish came on turf three starts ago when claimed for $50,000 from Craig Lewis. Hasn t won since defeating optional claimers over a sloppy surface at Aqueduct March 31, 2017 when trained by Michael Dilger. He wore blinkers that day and they return this afternoon. 4. David s Memory - Idle since finishing second at much longer trip on turf over one year ago. Gelding is winless in three starts on dirt, but is proven fresh as his second lifetime win came vs. maidens on the hillside in Arcadia after he had been away for five months. 5. The Rule of King s - Pressed early, then weakened to finish last of seven when overmatched in a turf stakes nearly a month ago. Lone victory came in gate-to-wire fashion when 10-1 nearly three months ago against $75,000 maidens. Gets first shot to race over the track where he trains, but would be a surprise. 6. Super Sol - Crushed maidens by four lengths when returning from a layoff of more than five months 29 days ago. Has worked well in the interim for Hall of Fame trainer, including a bullet blowout three days ago. Colt purchased for $400,000 as a yearling can score right back. 7. Lauren s Ladd - Stablemate of Jan s Reserve goes turf to dirt after finishing fourth of 10 when 15-1 three weeks ago.
