Review f Previus Annual Meeting & Minutes: Last MCA Annual Membership Meeting was June 25, Kathy reviewed the highlights f that meeting and the minutes were apprved. Have a new and imprved website after the previus ne was literally hacked and destryed Added Junir Bys and Girls U-18 t the MCA events and website Je Zezel retired frm fficiating at state events, replacement needed Review f Treasurer s Reprt: Kathy presented the Treasurer s reprt and Phil Devre added additinal cmmentary and explanatin. Mst incme cmes frm member clubs and the dues they pay ($3/curler). Imprtant t nte that dues must be paid by January 31 f each year in rder t cunt tward the numbers used t determine hw many reginal USCA representatives and vtes Minnesta s gets at natinal meetings. Key message is pay yur dues n time. MCA is wed $6,000 frm fraud lss recvery, repayments cntinue per schedule. The expense part f the reprt shws exactly what the MCA supprts and hw mney is spent. Read the ntatins fr further explanatin. Ntatin #4 shuld say that Patches are given t winners (nt participants) f Clubs, Mixed, U-18 playdwns. The Putnam Investment Accunt has clser t $45,000 in it giving the MCA a cash balance f apprximately $80,000. The Treasurer s Reprt was apprved.

2 Currently, we pay the head fficial a $300 stipend fr Mixed, M & W State Club Champinships and B & G U-18 State Champinships. There was a prpsal t keep the $300 stipend fr Mixed, but increase the stipend t $500 fr State Clubs and U-18 State Champinships as it is significantly mre wrk. The questin was asked if ther regins pay their fficials. N ne present knew fr sure, but ne persn said they didn t think they did in Wiscnsin. The prpsal t raise the stipend fr the Head Official t $500 fr State Club and U-18 State Champinships while leaving the stipend at $300 fr Mixed State Champinship was apprved. Anther prpsal was t create a Finance Cmmittee. The Treasurer wuld be a member alng with thers. Cmmittee t be frward thinking and frward budgeting abut MCA funds. Fr instance, shuld we give zer interest lans t clubs that need things t cntinue curling (like Mankat needed in the past)? Shuld we raise fee frm $3 t smething mre and what wuld that d fr the MCA, etc. Thse present agreed with the idea. Nw we need members t be part f this cmmittee (see later ntes). Recap f MCA State Events: The winners f the MCA state events are psted n the MCA website, alng with past winners. Infrmatin n hw t hst an MCA state event is als psted n the MCA website. There was n Men s Senir State Event this year as n club agreed t hst it. See next discussin n rtating clubs t hst events. Hst Clubs fr State Events: Kathy prpsed a 4 year rtatin fr the MCA events. The purpse is t make sure the MCA isn t scrambling at the last minute t find hst clubs and fficials as well as t make sure participants have plenty f ntice s they can decide if they want t participant in an event. We reviewed the prpsed schedule. Cnversatin ensued with the key pints belw. Shuld the 4 year rtatin fcus n events that lead t smething beynd the state (e.g. Natinals)? If s, Gpher State Wmen s and the Men s Senirs Bnspiels wuld nt be part f the rtatin. Currently, if supprted by the MCA, then nly MCA and USCA clubs can participate and/r hst state event. Gpher State has its wn rganizatin and the current President (Ann Flis) wuld prefer t find their wn sites rather than be part f the rtatin. Men s Senirs nly gets 16 pins frm the MCA. Prpsal was made t have Gpher State and Men s Senirs nt be part f the fficial rtatin. These events wuld reprt at the MCA Annual Spring Meeting bth the results f their event and wh will be hsting the next lcatin. Prpsal was apprved. While reviewing the prpsed schedule fr the ther events (minus Gpher State and Men s Senirs), Phil Devre mentined that the hst club needs t have at least 5 sheets fr the State Club Champinships if bth Men s and Wmen s events are held at the same site, same time. The same is true fr the Junir Bys and Girls U-18. A same time, same hst club is preferred fr Clubs and U-18 as nly ne fficial is needed versus tw and qualified fficials are (currently) hard t cme by. In additin, these events typically run fur days (Thursday Sunday) s hst clubs need t be aware as they may have t cancel ne r several f their regular club leagues. Kathy went thrugh the schedule fr all events, fcusing n the next tw years. Results are as fllws: Men s Senirs bth Bemidji and Cambridge are gd with hsting in the next 2 years. While nt fficially part f the MCA schedule (per decisin abve), clubs have been lined up. In additin, Tw Harbrs expressed an interest in future events. Gpher State Brainerd and Mankat are gd with hsting in the next 2 years. In additin, Duluth, Cambridge and Itasca als expressed interest in hsting in the future. This infrmatin will be given t Ann Flis as she determines lcatins fr Gpher State.

3 M & W State Club Champinships Curl Mesabi is gd with 2019 r Chaska is tentatively gd with 2020, but it depends n if they get chsen t hst the State Junirs. Perhaps Curl Mesabi and Chaska can switch years with Chaska hsting in and Curl Mesabi in Kathy will fllw up. In additin, Dakta can pssibly hst dwn the rad. B & G U-18 State Champinships Duluth and St. Paul are k t hst fr the next 4 years as lng as it stays between Christmas and New Year s. Mixed State Champinship Dakta and Fur Seasns are gd with hsting the next 2 years. In additin, Tw Harbrs, Mankat and Cambridge may be interested in the future. Nted that currently Mixed Dubles is run at the natinal level, n state event. Curl Mesabi needs t lk at their calendar and will get back with Kathy n ptins fr what it can hst. Saint Paul can pssibly hst an event in January if the Big Spiel gets mved t the fall. Itasca can t hst in the seasn, but is a pssibility fr future seasns. New Business: Larry Barrt frm Heather CC, Mapletn, respnded t a questin abut the previus existing Minnesta State High Schl Champinship. It hasn t been played fr the last 2 years, but has been played at 12 clubs arund the state in the past. D we keep it ging? Larry has driven this in the past, but he needs t give this up. There is a trphy, which Larry has at his huse and is wndering where the trphy shuld be hused ging frward. Discussin abut high schl level prgrams and hw this is being handled. Dakta and Fur Seasns have High Schl level prgrams, but it is hard t get it t be a letter sprt. Fur Seasns has a multi-week prgram and it is attractive t kids, but parents are asking What s next? Hard t get the schl districts t supprt with transprtatin, etc. Wuld be great t have a Junir bnspiel circuit that maybe the MCA can crdinate acrss the state. Dakta has gne the Independent Prvider rute t get letters awarded t their high schl prgram participants. Questins asked abut hw this fits r desn t fit with the Junir prgrams arund the state as well as the U-18 prgrams. Prpsal was t cntinue discussin abut this, including adding infrmatin t the MCA website abut hw t start a High Schl Prgram. Kathy will talk with Larry and Sandra (Dakta) and Keri (Fur Seasns) n hw t mve frward. Missing Trphies: Lking specifically fr the Mixed State Trphy. Everyne asked t lk arund their clubs and reprt t Kathy Busch any state r natinal trphies currently held at particular clubs. MCA Bard Nminatins & Electins and Cmmittees Discussin: Executive Bard Psitins: President Kathy Busch (St. Paul) agreed t serve anther year. Her nminatin was apprved. Secretary Cyndee Jhnsn (Duluth) (via Kathy Busch) agreed t serve anther year. Her nminatin was apprved. Treasurer Nrma O Leary (Tw Harbrs/Duluth) (via Kathy Busch) agreed t serve anther year. Her nminatin was apprved. 1st Vice President (Games and Events) Phil Devre was nminated and apprved t fill this psitin which is currently vacant. Phil asked that smene be in the wings t take ver frm him in the future. Carrie Harms (Fur Seasns) vlunteered Tdd Birr t help Phil in the meantime.

4 2nd Vice President (Cmmunicatins) Kelli Ellingsn (Cambridge) was nminated and apprved t fill this psitin, taking ver frm Denny Bne. MCA Representative t USCA Bard Cyndee Jhnsn s (Duluth) term is cmplete in June Jeff Annis (Mapletn) was elected t replace CJ. Nick Wellen (FS, Blaine) cntinues until June MCA Cmmittees: Cmmunicatins Kelli Ellingsn (Cambridge) and Sandy Brmenschenkel (Itasca) will be members. Finance Treasurer Nrma O Leary will be a member. Officials Susie Czarnetzki will chair and Sandra McMakin will be a member. Kathy reprted Susie Czarnetzki (Willmar) is willing t serve n the Officials Cmmittee. Susie has been reviewing and cleaning up the (utdated) database f Minnesta Officials and their levels. Besides keeping a gd list, the cmmittee will als assign fficials t MCA events, cnduct training fr fficials, and ther tasks. Ging frward, Susie will ask each club t disseminate infrmatin abut being an fficial t its members t recruit additinal fficials as well as making sure thse listed by club is crrect. Icemakers Sctt Belvitch (Chaska) will be a member. All cmmittees are lking fr additinal members. Each club t find additinal members. Specific tasks and pssible cmmittee activities are listed in the prpsed updated Bylaws. MCA Bylaws: A revised set f Bylaws, mre apprpriate t the current methd f MCA peratins than the 1997 set, was sent t all clubs in March fr review. Many attendees said they read the prpsed revisin and they had feedback. There was nt enugh time t review all cmments at this meeting. Club representatives asked t review and prvide cmments t Kathy Busch by July 1, Executive Bard will revise as needed and send revisin t clubs fr a vte by September 1, Want these apprved fr the seasn. Club Updates: Denny Bne (Curl Mesabi) asked what is wrking t bth recruit AND retain curlers. They hld different fun events (e.g. Burger Night) and get gd attendance, but few becme lng-term members. Fur Seasns have different pen huses and then a multi-week fun league. This fun league becmes a stepping stne t jining a regular league. Peple are much mre cnfident t mving up t a regular league after having played multiple weeks with like-skilled individuals. Duluth suggests having a multi-week prgram fr new curlers where yu fcus n different parts f the game (delivery, sweeping, strategy, etc.). Yu must have instructrs cnduct these sessins s peple really learn hw t curl and nt just in ne sessin. By bringing peple back multiple times and really teaching them in depth, they are much mre cnfident in jining a league. Saint Paul They have a spring league fr new curlers and charge much less mney than if jining the club and paying fr a regular league. Rchester They have a 4-6 week instructinal league which they charge fr, but if they jin a league afterwards, they have that charge credited t their league fees. This is a set prgram with instructin nt just playing games similar t what Duluth suggests. Curl Mesabi suggests the MCA might want t help with this ffering suggestins f what really wrks t recruit and retain curlers. Game Rules Update: WCF events will play the Five-Rck Free Guard Zne beginning Octber The 2018 Wrld Mixed will be played with this new rule. The USCA will infrm us when they will adpt this but prbably at the same time. Sandra McMakin (Dakta) suggested that Minnesta State Champinships use the same rules as the Wrld Curling Fundatin. She mentined there was cnfusin and cnsternatin at the Mixed

5 Natinals (that Dakta hsted) when sme teams wanted t use the five-rck free guard zne rule (as it will be in effect when the 2018 Wrlds take place) and sme teams were nt prepared t implement this strategy. MCA is cntinuing t lk at whether the State Club Champinships and U-18 shuld g t 8 ends vs 10 ends (Mixed already is 8 ends). The USCA stipulates regins have the freedm t run playdwns hwever they chse. It was agreed Minnesta events shuld cnsider Sandra s pint abve abut ptentially matching the Wrld rules. MCA Website and Scial Media Accunts: MCA received a request frm the MN Histrical Sciety abut expanding their reference library sectin n curling in Minnesta. Anyne able t assist this prject shuld cntact Kathy Busch. Nvember 4-16, 2018 (dates subject t change), sixteen members f the United States Wmen's Curling Assciatin will be participating in a curling tur f the Canadian Maritimes (New Brunswick, Nva Sctia, and Prince Edward Island). Of nte...the men are thinking f starting a similar tur. Club representatives shuld ask at their clubs t gauge interest Spring Meeting: Agreed it wuld be held at the Fur Seasns Curling Club in Blaine.
