1 Newsletter 24 October Issue 8 Dear Parents and Carers, A very busy first half term has come to an end, extremely positively. On Wednesday it was a pleasure to see large numbers of our Year 11 students and their parents/carers here in school, talking to teachers about learning. It is worth noting at this stage that our trial exam season now lurks just around the corner. Thursday saw a great Awards Evening take place here in school with many awards being given out to past and present students. A full report on the Awards Evening appears on page 2, along with a list of our winners congratulations to you all. On Friday, our staff training day saw colleagues engaging in different workshops all over school, some led by ourselves and some by external providers. Our day focused on teaching and learning strategies to ensure rapid progress within lessons by all students. Celebration assemblies took place for all year groups this week and we were able to reward and acknowledge many of our students who have done well since September. The Headteacher s Awards shown on this page are only a small indication of how well large numbers of students are currently doing in many of their subjects. The assemblies, which took place on Monday to Thursday lunchtimes, were a pleasant place to be and a great way to say well done after a hectic seven or eight weeks. Assemblies in our first week back after half term will concentrate upon revisiting our basic expectations, as well as highlighting our new emphasis on litter around campus, which is currently at a level which we do not want to become the norm. Finally, please remember that we have greatly improved standards of uniform by continuing to work in partnership with yourselves. The half term break is an ideal time to top up on any items of uniform which need replacing. For those of you able to do so, have a restful break. HEADTEACHER AWARDS Owen Bicheno and Caleb Mowle: Completing the New Forest Gridiron 100KM cycle route in under 6 hours in poor weather Fatima Khatun: Excellent attitude and progress in Physics Jodhi Pelosi and Alice Critchley: Achieving Level 8 in History Abigail Mursell: Mature and hardworking attitude in PE since September Michaela Logan: Excellent progress in Science Callum Chase and Erin Edkins: Continued effort in Science Sana Humphreys: Determination to succeed in Maths James Edwards and Ella Kenney: Consistently high standard of Algebra homework Ben Hendy: Excellent progress in Spanish Elissa Warren and Emily Rowe: Superb Geography Assessment and homework this term Mollie Reilly-Potter: True asset to her Tutor Group with her well-behaved attitude to learning Charlie Fennimore and Jordan Stacey: Implementing feedback into their GCSE PE practical lessons Connor Mumford: Excellent attitude and contribution to break-time debates Jamie Meakin: Polite behaviour in lessons Nic Adhimar: Achieving an A in PE Theory test Danish Hameed and Oliver Bronwin: Excellent effort in English Noah El Alami: Superb homework, really enthusiastic participation and achieving Level 4c in Spanish Peter Shaw, Headteacher

2 A GLITTERING AWARDS EVENING AT CARISBROOKE COLLEGE The first Autumn half term at Carisbrooke College ended with an evening of celebration as parents/carers, teachers, Governors and Trustees came together to celebrate the achievements of students in the previous academic year. In a packed school hall, turned into an Oscars style venue, via the talents of Marie Greaves and Jo Boyd, supported by a hardworking premises team and other colleagues, teachers proudly read out citations to a range of award winners (listed below.) On stage, Cheryl Gradidge worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that visual representations of staff speeches were readily available. Photographs were taken by Hannah Verlander, with catering undertaken by Rose Havard and her merry band of student helpers. Guest speaker, John Coughlan, Director of Children's Services for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, spoke of the importance of ambition and urged students to aim high. Terence Hart, Chair of Governors, recognised the partnership between home and school and urged parents to acknowledge and continue to support the achievements of their children. Mary Case, High Sheriff and a former Carisbrooke student, also attended and gave out awards to a large number of those nominated, including teachers nominated by students in all year groups. Entertainment was provided by the Carisbrooke College Jazz Quartet as well as Molly Frost, whose interval performances went down an absolute storm. Headteacher, Peter Shaw, who spoke about the privilege of leading Carisbrooke, described the event as " one of those that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. We have come a long, long way in a short space of time and I am so proud of our students and staff. This is what Carisbrooke is about now, and will continue to be about." 3 Page 3 Thank you to those who supported the Business Studies event last Monday evening. If you were unable to attend the meeting on 21st October, regarding the forthcoming controlled assessment, then the exam board questions and a copy of the presentation and how you might like to support your child have been issued. Your son/daughter should be able to discuss this with you. There are a number of revision tools currently available that we would recommend for this syllabus: CGP study guides and workbooks Edexcel Revision Guide and Workbook SAM Learning DATES FOR YOUR DIARY NOVEMBER 4 School Reopens to Students 12 Oxbridge presentation to Gifted & Talented Students 12 VI form Open Evening 5pm-8pm 12 Year 11 Federated Careers Roadshow At VI form campus 10am-5pm 13 Year 8 Parents Evening Amazon are currently offering a 25% discount on Edexcel workbook and guides. The workbook comes complete with answers so your child can assess his/her understanding and you can check their progress, if you wish. I intend to subsidise the cost by a further 25% meaning that each book will cost 2. I have ordered these books and they are now in stock. If you would like a copy of each for your son/daughter to keep at home then please contact me. Please also note that the research phase has to be completed during November as the write up is scheduled for 3 rd and 5 th of December. If you have any questions regarding this please me at: jonathan.wrixon@carisbrooke.iow.sch.uk

4 Page 4 U15 PORTSMOUTH CUP RESULT Havant & Waterlooville 0 2 East Cowes Vics The East Cowes Vics progressed to the Quarter Finals of the Portsmouth Cup after beating last year s champions Havant & Waterlooville. In what was a very tough and physical match, the Island side had the better of the early exchanges, and deservedly took the lead after 30 minutes, when Joel Porter got in behind their defence and calmly slotted home. Kicking up the slope in the second half, the Vics always looked dangerous as Havant & Waterlooville pressed for an equaliser. Jake Cass and Ollie McArthur were both having outstanding games in the middle of midfield and the whole defensive unit remained solid and limited Havant & Waterlooville to long shots outside our box. Victory was finally sealed with 5 minutes to go, when Jake Cass broke up an attack in midfield and found Liam Blythe who created space for himself and hit a shot which sailed over their keeper and into the net to seal victory. Manager Ian Cass said the victory was down to every player in the squad and he couldn t praise them enough for their hard work, determination and team spirit. Team: Morgan Perrin and Harry Ridley (Sandown Bay Academy), Jake Cass: Captain, Ollie McArthur, Ben Smith, James Whitewood, Connor Mumford, Billy Heard, Jordon Stacey, Liam Blythe and Joel Porter (Carisbrooke) Substitutes: Charlie McFarlane and Sam Downes (Carisbrooke), Jacob Morley (Ryde Academy) and Ben Harvey (Christ the King) SCHOOL MEAL PRICE INCREASE Please note that an inflationary increase to the school meal price will be applied from Monday 4th November, The price of a standard two-course meal will increase from 2.00 to 2.05 and the free school meal allowance will, therefore, increase accordingly. Adjustments to the tariff prices have been made in line with this 2.5% uplift for individual items. A copy of the tariff can be found on your school s website and in the canteen. Chartwells review all charges on an annual basis and take into consideration cost of sales. Unfortunately, due to inflation remaining high and, in particular, the cost of food continuing to rise, despite a number of mitigating actions, we have no further option but to propose a price review to add these direct costs onto our selling price. This price increase has been agreed by the Governing Body. If you would like any further information regarding your school meals service, or have any comments, please feel free to get in touch with Peter Holman, Regional Manager for West Sussex and the Isle of Wight, or any of the Chartwells team on or by chartwellsiow@compassgroup.co.uk. Alternatively, please write to Chartwells at The Innovation Centre, St Cross Business Park, Newport, IW PO30 5WB. Morrison's vouchers will be available in store until Sunday 27 th October. Please bring your vouchers to the LRA. We will be collecting these until Friday 22 nd November. Thank you!

5 Page 5 CALLING ALL YEAR 7 PARENTS/CARERS: NETBALL NEWS Please remember to return the slip attached to the recent letter sent home if you are interested in the Numeracy/Literacy Student Catch up Project, or the Adult Literacy/Numeracy workshop. The deadline for return of your slips has been extended to Friday 8th November. U16: On 22 nd October, the U16 netball team played against Sandown Bay Academy at home. The game started quite slowly, however, the team were soon in their stride playing some excellent netball pieces. Fast passing, speedy runs and a little bit of dancing form Jade Dent got the ball into the circle where the two shooters, Emily Czerwinke and Jade Matthews, were on form and scoring plenty of goals. Interceptions throughout the centre court by Sophie Blake, Paige Driscoll, Bethan Downer and Jade Dent (followed by yet again another dance!) meant that the Carisbrooke team had plenty of ball possession which they converted into goals. Superb defending and rebounding by Kiera Hodgson and Rosie Wilson again added to Carisbrooke s lead. The team played extremely well throughout the game keeping composure and control of the ball. Player of the match goes to Jade Matthews for great use of space and netball tactics. Year 9: On Tuesday 8 th October the Year 9 netball team started their season playing games against Cowes Enterprise College and Christ the King College. The harder of the two games came first with Cowes putting out a strong team. The Carisbrooke squad worked well in all areas of the court, controlling the pace of the game, structuring their attack and defending the hoop well. Unfortunately, Cowes managed to pull away with the end result of During the second game was where Carisbrooke took control. Again they controlled the flow of the game well and everyone stepped up with their performances, there were some great flying interceptions from Tia Atkinson and some solid shooting from both Megan McArthur and Chloe Crates. To give them extra confidence going into next weeks tournament, they won the match On Tuesday 15 th October the team travelled to Cowes Enterprise College to take part in their annual Island Schools Netball tournament. With a tough first game against Ryde School, Carisbrooke College did well to keep Ryde below 20 goals. They showed some great skills and worked well together as a team (the score was 14-2.).The second game, against Cowes Enterprise College B team, gave the them some muchneeded confidence. They structured their attack well and moved the ball up the court successfully, with Jamie-Lee Robertson, Megan Tweed and Eleanor Kenny taking control. This game ended on a positive for the Carisbrooke team 6-0. The third game was against Christ the King College. After a strong win against them the week before, the team went into this game confident and with a flare in their eyes. With some great interceptions from Tia Atkinson and Courtney Lock at one end and some superb attacking play in the circle by Megan McArthur and Chloe Crates at the other, the team dominated the game to win The fourth and final game was the one which would make the difference between 3 rd or 2 nd place. All eyes were on the game, not knowing which way it would turn. Again the team strung some great moves together, which resulted in 3 goals being scored but, unfortunately, it was not enough to get one over on the Cowes A team; the final score being 6-3. Overall the Carisbrooke team played well with some great positives being taken from all 4 games, confidence shot through the roof and some great teamwork skills were evident. Well done to the Year 9 team: Courtney Lock, Tia Atkinson, Megan Tweed, Jamie-Lee Robertson, Eleanor Kenny, Megan McArthur and Chloe Crates. Report by Beck Healey Teacher of PE
