This & That THE DWINDLING SCHEDULE--Kansas City enters tonight with 19 games remaining on the 2014 docket, which includes the completion of the suspended game on September 22 with KC trailing 4-2 in the 10th...the Tigers are down to 17 games left while Cleveland, who enters tonight five back, has 19 to go, also including the suspended contest...kc s remaining opponents include the Indians (3+ suspended game), Detroit (4), Boston (4) and the White Sox (7)...meanwhile, aside from the four with the Royals, Detroit has Cleveland (3), Minnesota (7) and the White Sox (3). CENTRALLY LOCATED--Of the 19 games remaining on the 2014 docket, 13 of them will be within the American League Central and go a long way in deciding who represents the division in post-season play...with losses in the last first two games of this series, Kansas City has dropped to in what has been a rollercoaster ride intradivisionally...kc turned the page from a 5-15 start within the Central to go in its next 36 A.L. Central contests, but has since lost five in a row and trail 4-2 in a suspended contest against Cleveland...this series with the Tigers concludes tonight and then KC will step out of the division again for four at home against the Red Sox before finishing up with 14 straight within the Central, which includes the completion of the suspended contest...for the record, the Royals went vs. the A.L. East, vs. the A.L. Central and had a big league best 15-5 ledger against the National League, of which all but four of those games were against the N.L. West. ROAD WORK--The Royals are 2-3 on this 6-game journey with tonight remaining...despite losses in the first two games of this series, Kansas City still possesses a solid road ledger, just a road win shy of matching last year s victory total...the Royals started the year 0-5 away from The K, but has gone since (.603 winning pct.), including a 15-7 mark since July 22...the visit here snapped a 7-series road unbeaten streak dating back to late July...KC had won stops in Chicago, Oakland, Arizona, Minnesota, Texas and New York and split a 2-game set in Denver vs. the Rockies. SUSPENDED GAME RESUMPTION--The Cleveland Indians announced that the September 22 resumption of the August 31 suspended game will have a 6:05 first pitch in Progressive Field (5:05 Kansas City time)...the game will resume with Kansas City coming to bat in the bottom of the 10th inning, trailing 4-2, with Mike Moustakas scheduled to face reliever Kyle Crockett...the Indians plated a pair of unearned runs in the top of the 10th just prior to the storm s arrival...all players on both expanded rosters are eligible to participate in the game resumption unless they ve already been removed from the contest. THE TERRIFIC TRIO--Much of Kansas City s success this year can be traced to the seventh, eighth and ninth innings thanks to the trio of Kelvin Herrera, Wade Davis and Greg Holland, respectively...the trio has combined to allow just 3 earned runs in 73.0 innings in this span that began on July 22 for a 0.37 ERA while fanning 79 and holding the opponents to a collective.157 average (39-for-249)...Herrera has a streak of 28.2 consecutive scoreless frames alive, which spans his last 29 outings... the only pitcher in baseball with a longer active streak is Davis, who is in the midst of a 32-appearance streak with 29.2-straight shutout innings...holland, who has been sidelined for a few days with a tight right triceps, is the only one of the three to be scored upon, allowing 3 earned runs in 21.2 innings (1.25 ERA) since July 22, but has converted 17 of his last 18 save chances, including his 16th consecutive conversion a week ago tonight for his 42nd rescue. CHALLENGES FEW AND FAR BETWEEN--Manager Ned Yost has asked for just eight reviews in Kansas City s last 64 contests, and none in the last 15 games... the last KC challenge was on August 24 in Arlington when Yost won a reversal on a double play call...he and the Royals have been extremely successful this year, going in reviews (63%)...on the flip side, KC s opponents have gone 16-for-38 (42%) in replay challenges. SHARPENING THE SHORT GAME--The Royals had two more infield hits last night and enter tonight leading the American League with Kansas City has four in the Top 10 individually in infield knocks with Nori Aoki ranking fourth with 24, while teammates Alcides Escobar and Lorenzo Cain tied for eighth with 23, followed by teammate Jarrod Dyson tied for 10th (22). FOUR WOULD VE MATTERED--The Royals couldn t reach their magic number last night and wound up dropping a 4-2 decision...when KC plates at least four runs in a game, they are an impressive and dating back to the start of 2013, the Royals are when scoring four or more...conversely, when held to three or fewer, the Royals are just this season. DAVIS AMONG BASEBALL S ELITE--Wade Davis had to step in for closer Greg Holland over the weekend in New York, but that didn t matter as he locked down the first two saves of his professional career on Friday and Sunday...he possesses the Majors longest scoreless inning streak at 29.2, while his season ERA of 0.71 is tops in the Majors among all hurlers who have thrown at least 40.0 innings...the last run Wade allowed was on June 25th and has been the lone run surrendered in his last 51.0 innings for a 0.18 ERA dating back to April 26...since giving up two earned runs on April 5, Wade has allowed only two runs over his last 56 outings (58.0 innings) for a 0.31 ERA, while fanning 91...he opened the year going almost four full months without allowing an extra-base hit, but Minnesota s Kurt Suzuki doubled on July 31. HOLLY GETTING A REST--Greg Holland has had the last five days off to rest a tight triceps, but the KC closer still ranks second in the A.L. with 42 saves...he is the first to record back-to-back 40-save seasons for KC since Dan Quisenberry did it in 1983 (45) and 84 (44)...Holly has made good of 42 of his 44 tries this year, including 35 of the last 36 and 16 in a row...over a longer haul, Holland has converted 82 of his last 85 attempts (96.5%) since May 30 of last season, the highest percentage among closers with at least 40 opportunities in that span...since that date, Greg has five more saves than any other pitcher in baseball (Craig Kimbrel - 77) and has allowed just 14 earned runs in innings for a 1.17 ERA...he recorded his 100th career save on August 8 and since posting his first career save on August 3, 2011 vs. Baltimore, Holland has gone 109-for-119, the best save pct. at 91.6 among closers with at least 100 save opportunities...since becoming Kansas City s full-time closer on August 1, 2012, Holland has gone 105-for-112 in save situations, the most saves in the majors while Holly s 93.8 save pct. is the best among relievers with at least 80 save chances. vs. Tigers (2014) vs. Tigers (career) On Road (career) vs. Porcello vs. Buchholz Player AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI Adams Aoki Butler Cain Colon Dyson Escobar Giavotella Gordon Gore Hosmer Ibanez Infante Kratz Moustakas Nix Peguero Pena Perez Willingham
