Race 4: McCarthy Homes Handicap 1200m Zonk trainer Mr L Bridge reported that he was satisfied with the post-race condition of the mare. Race 5: EML Handicap 1600m Veladero trainer Mr C Waller was satisfied with the post-race condition of the gelding, however it is the intention to have Veladero ridden more conservatively at its next start. Having regard to the manner in which Veladero raced, Stewards believed that no further action was necessary. CANTERBURY PARK Wednesday 23 May 2018 Barrier attendant Mr Hyland provided his telephone records to the Stewards, which did not reveal any irregularities. Stewards were satisfied that Mr Hyland's use of his mobile phone was in accordance with his explanation provided to the Stewards on the day. Racing NSW Stewards have now issued a formal direction that barrier attendants are not to use their mobile phones whilst performing official duties without the permission of the Stewards. RACE 1: Spring Carnival On Sale Monday Handicap 1200m Irish Bet on jumping was crowded between Diplomatico and Ronstar, which shifted out. Ducale from its wide barrier was steadied and shifted in behind runners shortly after the start. Overraced throughout the early and middle stages. Rider App. J Duggan stated that her mount hung in in the early part of the straight and for this reason in a slapping motion she used the whip down the shoulder of the filly in an attempt to stop it from hanging in. App. Duggan was reprimanded under AR137A(4)(c) for the use of the whip on a horse that was out of contention. In assessing penalty, Stewards took into account the racing manners of Ducale and also the force of the whip strikes.

2 2 Diplomatico began awkwardly and then was bumped by Irish Bet, which was taken out by Ronstar. From its wide barrier was steadied and shifted in behind runners shortly after the start. Raced keenly in the early stages as its rider B Avdulla restrained his mount to find cover. Under pressure in the straight was inclined to lay out and near the 200m shifted away from Galina, resulting in B Avdulla changing his whip to the left hand. Over the final 100m was inclined to lay in and proved difficult to ride out. Galina near the 1000m was bumped by Diplomatico when that runner shifted in to obtain cover behind Irish Bet. When being shifted to the outside of Irish Bet near the 300m was briefly held up and blundered at that point. RACE 2: Winter Racing The Dark Horse Handicap 1500m Burden Of Proof slow to begin and shortly afterwards was hampered by Playard, which shifted in. Throughout the early stages of the event raced in restricted room between Chalmers, which initially shifted out slightly, and Playard (T Angland) which, after having Burden Of Proof tight, shifted in away from Organza near the 1200m, crowding the run of Burden Of Proof, which had to be steadied. Whilst the Stewards were satisfied that Playard had shifted in away from Organza near the 1200m, T Angland was advised that he must ensure that he leaves sufficient racing room for runners to his inside wherever possible. Reflectivity knuckled on jumping, resulting in its rider B Avdulla becoming unbalanced and the gelding losing ground. In the early and middle stages was inclined to race keenly and passing the 1200m was checked to avoid the heels of Hardly Surprising when that runner was steadied in front. Sparky Lad near the 500m was bumped and taken wider when Playard shifted out to improve. Organza when questioned regarding his riding of the filly, in particular the reason it travelled wide without cover for the majority of the event, G Schofield stated that he was instructed to ride the filly conservatively in the early stages. He said that when Reflectivity, the expected early leader, jumped awkwardly, which resulted in that runner settling in a position that he had anticipated taking in the early stages, with the moderate early tempo, he positioned himself to the outside and behind Reflectivity, as he felt B Avdulla may choose to allow his mount to go forward and this would provide Organza with the opportunity to take that position with cover. He added that when Reflectivity held its position behind Hardly Surprising he was then left racing wide throughout the early and middle stages. G Schofield further added that, whilst he did consider going forward, with the tempo being moderate he felt, given his instructions to ride his mount conservatively, had he elected to go forward this would have resulted in both Gresham and Hardly Surprising holding their positions and therefore increasing the tempo. Playard when questioned regarding the performance, rider T Angland stated that the gelding was able to obtain cover in the early stages, where it travelled well. He said, with the moderate early tempo, Playard was disadvantaged when the race developed into a sprint home, whereby he found it difficult to make up ground in the straight. He added in his view the only other explanation he could offer was that Playard may not have backed up from its tough run at Randwick on 26 May A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 3: #Theraces Handicap 1200m Star Sensation slow to begin and shortly after the start was crowded between Smartedge and Lipizzan, which shifted out. Had some difficulty securing clear running near the 300m. Smartedge slow to begin. When questioned regarding his riding in the early part of the straight and as to whether there was an opportunity to take a run to the inside of Curdled, which had developed near the 350m, B Shinn stated that his instructions were to endeavour to have his mount a little closer than it had been at its previous starts. He said he was also advised that Smartedge has a 300m sprint and not to expose the gelding prior to this section of the race. He said, after following Curdled into the straight, he was aware that Brabinger, which had endured a tough run without cover, was racing to the inside of Curdled and for this reason he elected to look to obtain a run to the outside of Curdled. He added, after Siam commenced to improve into the race from the 400m, he committed to improve between Curdled and Siam but, as he endeavoured to shift out, Smartedge was inclined to lay in and was somewhat reluctant to go to the outside of Curdled. B Shinn further stated as a consequence he was unable to fully test his mount until near the 200m. He said that he was not aware that a run had developed between Curdled and Brabinger as his focus was on securing a run to the outside. Stewards advised B Shinn that in their opinion he had made an error of judgement by not availing himself of the option to the inside of Curdled, which would have allowed the gelding to have secured clear running sooner than it did, particularly in circumstances where the gelding had been inclined to lay in. Nicci's Gold slow to begin and then from its wide barrier was steadied and shifted in behind runners shortly after the start. Near the 300m was steadied when disappointed for clear running between Smartedge and Lipizzan, which shifted out. Nicci's Gold was then shifted back to the inside of Lipizzan near the 250m. Over the final 50m, when finishing the race off well, Nicci's Gold could not be tested when held up between Charlayne and Star Sensation, both of which shifted ground slightly. Charlayne on jumping was bumped by Siam, which shifted out. When questioned regarding the filly racing more forward, rider K McEvoy stated his mount commenced well today and, as he was caught wide in the early stages with no runner showing intent to go forward, he elected to allow the filly to take up a position outside the early leader Easy Eddie so as to avoid covering additional ground. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to have bled from both nostrils. Stable representative Mr C Duckworth was advised Charlayne would incur the mandatory 3 month ban and must trial or gallop 1000m to the satisfaction of the Stewards prior to racing again. Lipizzan raced keenly in the early stages. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to have been galloped on to the nearside hock. Dawn Dawn held up for clear running until the 300m. Brabinger overraced throughout the early stages and near the 1100m was steadied from the heels of Lipizzan. Raced wide and without cover for the majority of the event. Siam a post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

4 4 RACE 4: TAB Highway Handicap 1400m Whitty Woman as App. B McDougall was overweight, permission was granted for App. J Van Overmeire to be substituted as the rider of the filly. App. McDougall was fined the sum of $200 under AR120(b). Willyama shortly after the start was steadied when crowded between Radiant Choice and Belle Tournure, which shifted out. Fruitful Warrior rider A Adkins advised that the gelding pulled hard throughout the race and was caught three wide and without cover. He said that from as far out as the 500m the gelding was under pressure, before giving ground in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have a small wound on its poll and also a wound to the nearside corner of the lip. Trainer Mr R Butler stated that Fruitful Warrior's racing manners today were uncharacteristic in that it does usually settle. He said he was unable to offer any explanation as to why the gelding raced in this manner today. Mr Butler was asked to provide a veterinary clearance prior to the gelding racing again. Andy's A Star rider C Reith advised his instructions were to be forward on the gelding and, after missing the start, he had to make some use of the gelding to take up a forward position. He said Andy's A Star overraced badly in the early stages and did not settle at any stage of the event. He added that from the 700m he elected to commence to improve in a three wide line, but approaching the 600m had to be steadied from the heels of Fruitful Warrior when that runner commenced to give ground. He added from this point Andy's A Star was then inclined to hang out on the turn and raced greenly, which resulted in the gelding making the home turn wide before weakening in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Radiant Choice a post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have been galloped on to the off-hind heel. RACE 5: Eremein Handicap 1800m Green Sweet slow to begin (3L). Etymology held up for clear running until approaching the 300m, where it secured a run to the inside of New Tipperary. Dagny held up for clear running until after the 300m. Goathland passing the 300m was awkwardly placed close to the heels of New Tipperary when that runner shifted out under pressure. New Tipperary when questioned regarding the performance, rider J Collett stated that he was obliged to make some use of the gelding to take up a position outside the lead in the early stages. He said under pressure in the straight, particularly over the final 200m, New Tipperary was inclined to lay out and in his view may be better suited on a track that has more give in it. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. RACE 6: Pre-purchase & Save In Spring Handicap 1400m Gaytime Girl slow to begin.

5 5 Our Belisa jumped awkwardly and was bumped by Sharpness, which shifted in. Raced wide and without cover for the majority of the event. Levee Bank shortly after the start was steadied when crowded between Queen Misty and Annandale Lass, which shifted in. Held up for clear running until the 150m. Magic Alibi blundered shortly after the start. When questioned regarding the mare leading, B Shinn stated his instructions were to endeavour to ensure the mare jumped today, as it had a tendency to miss the start. He said he had anticipated this would allow Magic Alibi to take up a forward position behind the leaders. He added that when his mount commenced extremely well and he was positioned well in advance of La Chica Bella, he elected to make use of that start and go forward and cross that runner. B Shinn further stated that, whilst it was not his intention to lead the event, he felt Magic Alibi was able to obtain this position without having to be pressured in the early stages to do so. Trainer Mr G Ryan confirmed his instructions were to ensure that Magic Alibi began well today and also to ride with cover behind the leaders. Mr Ryan expressed some surprise that Magic Alibi was able to hold the lead, but in retrospect, given the moderate tempo, was satisfied with the ride of B Shinn. Queen Misty held up for clear running in the early part of the straight and near the 250m was directed to the outside of It's Time For Magic to secure clear running. It's Time For Magic for some distance near the 300m was held up and then shifted to the outside of Sharpness to obtain clear running near the 250m. Annandale Lass trainer Mr D Jackson was interviewed relative to the frequency of starts of the mare. Mr Jackson advised that it is now his intention not to race the mare until Muswellbrook on Sunday, 17 June On this assurance the Stewards issued no direction to Mr Jackson and advised that they will continue to monitor the mare's racing program. Hay Now rider J Collett stated that the mare was fractious in the gates, but settled back in the field, as is its usual racing pattern. He said the only explanation he could offer was that Hay Now may appreciate a track with a little more give in it. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. RACE 7: Sydney's West App Handicap 1500m Monasterio after being mounted in the mounting enclosure, reared up and slipped over, dislodging its rider J Parr. On arrival at the barriers, the gelding underwent a veterinary examination and was passed suitable to race. J Parr sustained no apparent injury in the incident. Slow to begin (2L). At the 300m made contact with Chatelard as it endeavoured to obtain clear running between Volpe and Chatelard. When disappointed for this run Monasterio was held up on the heels of Volpe for the remainder of the race and could not be fully tested. Volpe slow to begin. King Viv from its wide barrier was steadied and shifted in behind runners shortly after the start. Did not obtain clear running in the straight and was never tested.

6 6 Intueri held up for clear running for some distance near the 200m. At the 150m was steadied when disappointed for clear running between Medaille and Nat King Cu and then did not obtain clear running over the final 150m. Our Gravano for some distance near the 200m raced in restricted room between Mutarakem and Intueri, which shifted out and over the final 150m could not be fully tested when racing in restricted room between Volpe and Medaille. RACE 8: Octagonal Handicap 1400m Crafty Cop Stewards permitted K McEvoy to be declared as the rider of the gelding when he also held an engagement on the second emergency Beijing Board. When Beijing Board gained a start prior to scratching time at 7.30am, permission was granted for J Collett to be declared as the rider of the gelding at ½ kilogram overweight. When questioned regarding his riding, J Collett stated his instructions were not to ride the gelding hard from the barrier, but he expected to take up a forward position either in the lead or close to the lead. He said that, after following Moher across, he contemplated continuing to roll forward and cross that runner but, with the tempo in his opinion already genuine, he elected to remain three wide and with cover rather than contesting the lead, whereby this may have resulted in the tempo increasing. He added in the straight, following a tough run, Crafty Cop was unable to finish the race off. Special Missile began awkwardly, resulting in its rider B Avdulla becoming unbalanced. Sir Bacchus began awkwardly, shifted in and made contact with New Universe. In the early stages of the straightwas badly held up on the heels of Grande Rosso, before being shifted to that runner's outside near the 200m, where it obtained a narrow run between Grande Rosso and Crafty Cop. Mister Sea Wolf slow to begin and then shortly after was crowded between Liapari and Sons Of John, which shifted out. In this incident Mister Sea Wolf struck the heels of Sons Of John and blundered. Had some difficulty securing clear running in the early stages of the straight. Near the 100m was steadied and shifted to the inside of Special Missile to continue into clear running. Liapari from its wide barrier was steadied and shifted in behind runners shortly after the start. Moher raced keenly in the early stages. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Mighty Lucky approaching the 1000m was steadied away from the heels of Sons Of John (J Ford), which shifted in when not clear. J Ford was advised to ensure he is sufficiently clear when shifting ground. Mighty Lucky then raced keenly thereafter in the early stages. Sons Of John when questioned regarding the performance, rider J Ford stated that his mount was under pressure from the 600m and was unable to make up any appreciable ground in the straight. He said the only excuse he could offer for today's performance was that the gelding was carrying a high weight and was second up after a lengthy spell. A postrace veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

7 7 Beijing Board rider K McEvoy stated that his mount travelled wide in the event, albeit with cover, and initially responded to his riding making the home turn and in the early part of the straight. He said in his opinion the condition of the gelding gave out at the 200m and it would derive fitness benefit from today's performance. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer's representative Mr D Beadman was asked to report back on the post-race condition of the gelding. RACE 9: Ascot Restaurant Sale Sprint 1100m Akasaki - on jumping was hampered when crowded between Coonawarra and Bolero King, which shifted out. Held up in the early stages of the straight and near the 300m was steadied when disappointed for a run between Salerno and Virgilio. Akasaki was then shifted to the outside of Virgilio to find clear running near the 200m. Ozark slow to begin. When questioned regarding his riding, G Schofield stated that soon after straightening he placed is mount under pressure to improve. He said that as he approached the 300m he felt he had two options, to either go for a run between Nictock and Top Striker or shift to Top Striker's outside. He added that he ultimately elected to improve between Top Striker and Nictock but, as he commenced to do so near the 250m, Ozark was reluctant to improve into the position and laid out towards the heels of Top Striker. G Schofield further stated he continued to persevere for the run for some distance thereafter, but near the 100m was steadied when disappointed for the run due to Nictock shifting out. He said inside the 50m he switched to the outside of Top Striker, whereby he was able to secure clear running over the concluding stages. Voilier from its wide barrier was steadied and shifted in behind runners shortly after the start. Argent D'Or from its wide barrier was steadied and shifted in behind runners shortly after the start. Salerno raced wide and without cover for the majority of the event. Difficult To Get rider A Adkins dropped his whip approaching the 150m. GENERAL: Summary of whip use: Stewards noted the following riders exceeded the permitted strikes of the whip prior to the 100m under AR137A(5)(a)(ii). Bearing in mind the totality of whip use, no action was taken. Race 1 App. J Duggan (Ducale) 8 strikes prior to the 100m. Race 2 A Adkins (Hardly Surprising) 6 strikes prior to the 100m. Race 6: Our Belisa, Princess Posh (2), Hillary Step (2), Queen Misty, Magic Alibi. Race 7: Our Gravano, King Viv, Mutarakem, Nat King Cu, Volpe (2), I Am Serious. Race 8: Grande Rosso, Mister Sea Wolf, New Universe, Sons Of John, Invinzabeel. Race 9: Nictock (2), Difficult To Get, Coonawarra, Bryneich.
