September President's Report I m sure all the parents can agree with my sigh of relief that the year s netball season has come to a close. The early morning Curl Curl starts and sometimes late night trainings in the cold are difficult, but they are definitely worth it. I d like to start off by thanking the most important people involved in Wakehurst Netball Club, the girls themselves. I hope you have had the most enjoyable year playing for Wakehurst, and continue to do so in the future. It doesn t matter whether you don t win a game or win a Grand Final it s how you play and grow throughout the season. Sometimes it s a win in a quarter or that first goal you shoot or play a position you have never played before. Success can sometimes be measured by the smile on your faces or your coach s when you do a move that you practiced at training. As we all know our club is here to serve one purpose and that is to allow our girls the opportunity to be involved in a sport, have fun, keep fit and make life-long friends. It is only with the time freely and selflessly given, despite their busy lives and schedules, by those running this operation that allows the club to exist. I sincerely thank and a thousand thankyous are never enough for the Wakehurst committee Samantha Dyer (Vice President) Cathie Richardson (Club Secretary) Julian Humphrey (Treasurer) Kerrie Rigby (Minutes Secretary) Lisa D Urso (Uniform Steward) Adam Klemke (Gear Steward and Website Coordinator) Jenny Domjen (Coaches Convenor) Nicole Hayward (Umpires Convenor) Petah Condie (Duty Convenor) Karen Hayes (Registrar) Tasha Smithies (Netta Coordinator) Thank you very much for the effort you have put into providing the best experience possible not only for the girls, but for all of us, and for spreading your enthusiasm for this sport amongst the community. Thank you also to the lovely ladies who attended our meetings your contributions are greatly appreciated. I would like to extend a warm invitation to any parents who wish to become more involved, or have an opinion on a certain aspect of the club, to join our committee or attend our monthly meetings. Anyone is welcome to participate in these meetings and we are more than willing to hear any issues, qualms or ideas you may have within a friendly, face-to-face environment. Just as important as the committee are the wonderful people who give up their time to coach or manage a team. Wakehurst cannot run without the amazing efforts of those willing to tackle the often tough job of coaching, managing or mentoring the girls, for the first time or for numerous years. We know that sometimes you are talked into it and I can speak for the entire club and its members when I say your contributions are immensely appreciated, so thank you. This year we had 46 registered teams 7 Seniors, 30 Juniors and 9 (8-9) nettas teams which amounts to close to 400 players. As you can appreciate it is a huge task to register, grade, organise, find coaches and managers, get kits, organise training and everything else that goes with it. We do our very best every year to try and get it right. Sometimes we do get it right and sometimes we don t but we always give it our best effort and intentions. Of 37 junior and senior teams we had 19 made it to the finals series. Of these, 13 teams made it to the grand final 4 of which were winners, 10 played the final and 19 played semi finals. Congratulations to all these teams. It was excellent to see so many Wakehurst uniforms at Curl Curl. In 2015, Manly Warringah Netball Club introduced a perpetual trophy which was donated by the family of Joan Alderton. This trophy called the Presidents Cup is presented to the winners of the A Grade competition. It is with PO Box 418 Belrose West Page 1
great pleasure to announce that the winners of this award for a second year running are the Wakehurst A Grade team coached by Kellie Crookwell. Congratulations to Kellie and her team on this fantastic achievement and on an outstanding year all round. Net-Set-Go (Funnet) is a pre-coaching program where the aged girls can develop and refine their coaching skills. This program is also very successfully used as an introduction to netball for 6 to 7 year olds, encouraging 44 girls this year to participate in this wonderful sport. This year Nicole Carter kindly offered her services again to run the program. Thankyou to Lisa D Urso for helping organise and Aimee Carter for helping coordinate the program. I would also like to thank our young volunteers involved Maya Bohr, Olivia Kabalan, Talia Limnios, Nicola D Urso, Holly Palmer, Emma Chappelow, Piper Knight, Chloe Bradstreet and Gabbi Silkman. As you may or may not know all girls need to learn to umpire and will umpire from the age of 12. Each team has responsibilities to supply umpires throughout the year. Nicole Hayward our umpiring convenor with the help from Samantha Dyer organised coaching sessions for 12 and 13 year olds. These 3 sessions are invaluable to help our girls learn how to umpire and importantly how to enjoy umpiring. Nicole is a National B badged umpire and could be seen down the courts from early morning to late in the day either umpiring, playing or mentoring the young umpires. A huge thankyou to Nicole for all her time and effort - I truly believe she has the hardest job. A big thankyou to all our umpires who blow their whistles and umpired the best they can every week including the finals series. You are all a credit to the club. Congratulations to Jessica Rigby for receiving her National C grade badge this year. It is an awesome achievement. This year MWNA continued to be represented in Netball NSW Premier League competition with The Sapphires teams. These teams compete in the Opens and Under 20 s division. Wakehurst A Grade players Eliza Long and Mikah Van Gogh were again members of the Opens team and Samantha Horton, also from the Wakehurst A Grade team played in the Under 20 s. Jen Wright who is a former player and coach of Wakehurst successfully coached the Opens team assisted by Wakehurst Life Member, Lisa Eady as the team Manager. The Opens team made it to the Grand Final against the Sutherland Stingrays, and with a tight match from start to finish, the Stingrays took out the premiership Best of luck to the Sapphires in Congratulations are also due to the following Wakehurst Committee Members, Life Members and Players on their contributions to MWNA in 2016: Eliza Long - coached the MWNA 15 years Rep team, which finished 3 rd at the State Age championships. Kim Archer (Life Member) coached the MWNA 13 years Rep team who finished first at the State Age championships. Jenny Domjen (Life Member and Committee member) primary carer for MWNA 13 years Rep team Karen Hayes (Life Member and Committee member) manager of MWNA 13 years and 17 years Rep teams. Karen has also served not only as the Wakehurst Registrar, but is also a member of the MWNA Competition Committee and Rep Convenors Committee. We thank all these wonderful ladies on dedicating their time to not only Wakehurst, but to our association. Wakehurst has also had further success in representative selection in 2016: Alani Barros from the 12B team has been selected into the MWNA 13 year Representative squad for Congratulations Alani we wish you best of luck next year. Courtney Abbott and Mikah Van Gogh (Wakehurst A Grade) and Georgia Gemmell and Cara Doyle (17B) have been selected into the MWNA Night Interdistrict teams for This competition is held at Netball Central Homebush beginning in October for 10 weeks. Good luck and congratulations on your selections. Courtney Abbott, Mikah Van Gogh and Eliza Long also represented MWNA in the Opens team at the Samsung State Championships in June, and won their division convincingly. Courtney was also voted the players player for the event. Congratulations ladies. Wakehurst is very proud of your achievements. The MWNA Charity Gala Day was held on 24 th July to support the Australian Mitochondrial Disease Foundation, and Wakehurst entered 14 teams from 8 14 years. Although it was a very chilly day at Curl Curl, the girls all seemed to have fun whilst raising money for a deserving charity. Thankyou to all those who competed and to the umpires and coaches who volunteered their time to help. PO Box 418 Belrose West Page 2
We continued with keeping our club members up to date with three editions of the club newsletter. Thankyou to Samantha Dyer who put a lot of time and effort into creating these. Along with the start of the season information, age group information, mid season newsletter, and the end of season newsletter with coach s reports and information from today including all the awards. Our website and Facebook page are also regularly updated with important information and news stories. We hope these lines of communication continue to be useful to you. Congratulations to every player in the club. It is great to see our distinctive aqua and white uniform every Saturday morning throughout the season. You all play your best and with great sportsmanship. Thank you for making this club as vibrant and successful as it is. To all the family, friends and supporters thank you for being encouraging to our teams and respectful to the opposition and umpires. It s great to hear come on Wakehurst or let s go Wakehurst ringing throughout Curl Curl. Hopefully you have all had a great season no matter what the result. We look forward to seeing you next year. We will notify on Facebook, website and through the school s newsletters. So keep an eye out. Thankyou. We have seen the girls develop in so many ways, the obvious one to point out would be their netball skills, they have grasped and really taken on board how the game works, they have learnt to work as a team using each position to their strength to get the ball to where they want it to be and have really enjoyed their success in moving the ball around the court. They have loved trying every position and have started to learn where their own strengths lie and the importance of every single position. We have loved watching their confidence grow with each game. They are a happy team, and always play with a smile, they genuinely enjoy working together and have had a ball this year. PO Box 418 Belrose West Page 4
The girls have enjoyed getting to know the other teams too, on practice nights often begging to be able to play mini games with the other teams that are training. And on game days chatting to their opposite players. Every single girl has shown a huge commitment to coming both to practises and to matches. We know it has been hard at times for parents to get them their with so many other commitments, big thanks to all the effort that has gone on to make sure they can play. Another big shout out the parents for their support of every single child throughout the games, it means so much to the girls to have support from the side. OK, so it was suggested that we write a bit about each girl, this has been our hardest part of the report as you are all so individual and special, you have all shown courage and determination in different ways, so even though we may have only been able to write a couple of things about each girl please know that you each have so many skills and attributes that we have come to know and appreciate but we just couldn't put them all down. Sammy - We have loved seeing your confidence grow, your are such a good defender in the circle, you play with your heart and show such respect to others. Emma - You have worked so hard in your games, your have played some fabulous defence and shown such good understanding of the game. Khiliah - Your accuracy in shooting has been amazing, you are never still, always with your eye on the game. Kayla - Your first season of netball. You are like a little spring, you jump for the ball with so much determination and play with such passion. Frankie - Your first season, you have learnt so much and played with enthusiasm. You have taken to the circle work so well, you look for space and use it. Abby - You never stand still, you run and find space so well, when your team are looking for someone you are there. Ruby - Such a gutsy player. You play with your heart on your sleeve. You will never let a ball go and you chase it down with such determination. Megan - You have shown so much respect for your team and coaches. It was your first year at netball, and you have grasped it so well. Your interceptions and space finding as the season has gone on have been fantastic to watch. Charlotte - Again your first season. You make us smile, we cant help be drawn in by your absolute determination in defence and the comical way in which you accept instructions. You are such a brave player. Ourselves as new netball coaches have really enjoyed the experience, we have both spent so many hours on you tube looking up various training ideas and drills and scouring the internet for inspiration. Leanne really enjoyed the online course for coaches and found this so valuable when planning training, she has also been able to share these skills helping out with one of the older groups training sessions on occasions. Naomi as someone who has coached other sports in the past has loved the challenge of transferring these skills over to a new sport. I think we have both woken up in the night on many occasions working out what to do for training that week! And of working out how best to help each individual girl develop to their the best of their ability. A big thank you to the girls of Wakehurst 40, for making this an incredible and fun year, we really would love to do it all again. Wakehurst Team 41 Magpies The Wakehurst U9 Magpies had another great season this year. This is the 2nd season that the majority of the girls have played together and this was evident by the cohesiveness with which they played each week. Although scores were not kept for this grade, our girls dominated the court each week. It was great see the enthusiasm and energy that each player brought with them week after week, not to mention the huge improvement that each player has achieved from start to end of the season. Well done girls! Wakehurst Team 42 Kangas We had a strong and an extremely enthusiastic team that played every game with passion. We were very fortunate to win the vast majority of our games this year and when we didn't, we learnt from those games and were able to improve and become a better side. The toughest games of the year were against Wakehurst 40 team - both games were competitive and closely fought games which they challenged us to play our best. All of the girls enjoyed their season and are looking forward to playing again next year. PO Box 418 Belrose West Page 5
Wakehurst Team 43 Emus Our team had an enjoyable season, working well together and developing our skills. Six of our team had never played netball before, so we started with learning the fundamental rules and basic skills. As the season progressed, there was much improvement in all our players as they developed not only their individual skills but learnt how to work together as a team. Every game was played with enthusiasm and great sportsmanship, but most importantly they had fun and they were a pleasure to coach! Wakehurst Team 44 Dolphins Our team, the 'Dolphins certainly lived up to their name: fun, playful, and social! Most of the team had played together the previous Nettas season (Gemma, Georgia, Hannah, Olivia, Jessica, Lara) whilst three of the girls (Sasha, Carys and Sienna) were new to netball. Our training sessions were noisy, sometimes chaotic but always a lot of fun. To add to the excitement, we often had older siblings Jack, Daniel and Aiden join in which added to the intensity of our training drills and mini games. The focus was on giving every girl a chance to play each netball position as well as playing half of each game in their preferred positions. We ended each game of netball with a group cheer and the coach named the 'Player of the Match who took home the team mascot ( Aqua' the teddy bear) for signing/decorating. We have loved seeing each player improve in skill and confidence during the season. Thankyou to all the hardworking parents who helped with their support on game day and getting the girls to training regularly. The Mums also made a magnificent cheer squad during Saturday s games. Go Team Dolphins. Wakehurst Team 45 Hawkes A massive congratulations to all the wonderful players in the Under 8 Hawkes team: Chloe, Kate, Lily, Nikita, Teagan, Grace, Scarlett and Cleo. We had a terrific season and from day 1, the girls combined as a team very well. Training afternoons were fun and the girls learnt a lot of skills and kept improving each week throughout the season. Every member of the team displayed great sportsmanship and had a lot of fun on the netball court with each other. The gala day was a hit, and the team were the well deserving winners of this competition. Thank you to all the parents who encouraged each girl from the sidelines and cheered them on. Well done to all. Wakehurst Team 37 (10H) WAKEHURST netball club We remember the start of the season when most of the girls didn t know each other and not all of them had played netball before. Not letting this get in their way the girls quickly formed new friendships (which was evident at training) and came together as a team to work on their netball skills. From the start Eloise proved to be a very versatile player, happy to help out the team at both ends of the court and always trying her hardest. Intercepting was a strength of Eloise s as was her talent for shooting which developed throughout the season. Tahlia s skills improved throughout the season and she soon became a very strong midcourt player. Able to break for the centre pass easily leaving her defence behind, Tahlia was always available to help move the ball down the court. Always seeming to have endless energy McKenzie was all over the court during our games. Throughout the season she could always find a free space and was ready for the ball. During the season Georgie s movement skills in and outside of the circle improved, along with her ability to read the game. This helped the team get the ball closer to the hoop and gave her the opportunity to shoot some good goals. From the beginning Scarlet demonstrated excellent defence skills especially in the circle. Her ability to stick to her player and intercept the ball was outstanding and definitely contributed to a majority of the turn overs that were made during the games. It was clear that as the season progressed Katie became more alert. She was getting more intercepts and moving more effectively in the defence circle. Even though Katie had ankle issues she persevered and tried her hardest cause she didn t want to let down the team. Eva was a very hard-working player. She always had her eye on the ball and was ready to intercept. Eva s passes became stronger throughout the season which she used to her advantage during the games. She was always enthusiastic at training and willing to have a go. PO Box 418 Belrose West Page 6
Zefaria proved to be a very flexible player able and willing to help out in many positions. Her shooting skills developed throughout the season and she always turned up keen to play on game day. We loved coaching all the girls throughout the season and wish them all the best in 11s next year!! Wakehurst Team 29 (11C) This year the 11C's were faced with a challenging competition and after showing great sportsmanship and competitiveness finished in 6th position. There was great improvement in all the girls from their first game to their last game. At training we focused on fast feet to help with our general play as well as adding new skills like dodging, driving and clearing. These girls tried their hardest every game and never gave up, they should be very proud of themselves. I have enjoyed coaching the girls this season. Wakehurst Team 31 (11G) The 11G young ladies started the season with a bang and have not looked back. Considering 90% of the girls had not played together before, they just clicked and worked together from the beginning. The girls have and continue to learn and improve and were undefeated until round 6 after losing one of our main shooters to a broken wrist. This set back only made the girls pull together knowing they had to play a full game of netball every Saturday until our player returned. Coming into the finals season the 11G team still has only been beaten once. Impressively they have had only 50 goals scored against them to date. They are a well-oiled team and we are looking forward to a great finals campaign. I am more than proud of these amazing young ladies that always give 100%, show great sportsmanship and have become great friends. Wakehurst Team 23 (12B) This lovely team of girls had a great season finishing 2nd in the table. I am lucky to coach a group of girls that are both keen and talented netballers. They play the positions I ask them to, without hesitation, even if it's not their preferred position. They all put in a 100% effort both at training and when they are on the court on Saturdays. Thank you Millie, Maddie, Louise, Ella, Tayla, Alani, Caitlin, Jas and Katie. A big thank you to my manager Ali, for all your support and organising throughout the season. Also, thank you to a great group of parents who cheer from the sideline each week. Wakehurst Team 27 (12F) Well can I just firstly say, what a wonderful bunch of girls and parents this year! It's been a true pleasure to work with all the girls and their parents - who have become a tight group on and off the court. 12F girls have blossomed before our eyes and now are now set on finals - this is the third year in a row some of the girls have been in finals without having got past the semis - good luck to them! We wouldn't have had such a wonderful year had it not been for our amazing coaches from 17B's - Emma Connolly and Emma Humphrey. They have given the players constructive and helpful feedback and improved their skills, given extra time to mentor them in their first year of umpiring and we had girls in our team have never played before and they slotted in quickly with a minimum of fuss, thanks to help of our coaches. They are a credit to their families. PO Box 418 Belrose West Page 7
The highlight of our season (apart from coming 2nd on the ladder!) was playing the all-abilities-team - 'The Super Stars'. Our girls showed respect and sportsmanship and in our last game willingly gave them the win by putting some of our players on their team and ensuring turnovers. It was like we all won, and I don't think there was a dry eye amongst us parents. Incredibly proud and positive members of Wakehurst 27! Wakehurst Team 14 (15C) This was my first year of coaching, and I couldn t have asked for a better team of girls. They have played together for a number of years now, and we were looking forward to another successful season. After a shaky start, we went on to finish third overall, making it to the finals. We had two great semi-final games, before being knocked out by Seaforth, the only team we were unable to defeat all season! All the girls played their absolute best every week, and we all saw massive improvements from everyone as the season progressed. One of the nicest things about this team is how well they all support each other, always encouraging each other, helping out in other positions if needed and showing great teamwork and sportsmanship. Thank you and well done on a great season, and I hope to see you all back next year! Bethany Argue Bethany was one of our shooters. A great shooter, and always ready to take on any defence that came her way. Bethany was also a great fill-in GK if needed, and I know you didn t love it (but you re so good at it!) so thank you for filling in when needed, you did a great job. A great member of our team Bethany, well done on a great season! Emma Chappelow Emma was another of our shooters mainly playing GA. A master of the long shot, we saw some great goals from Emma this year. Also, some great improvement this season in moving around the circle, as well as acquiring some great tactics to deal with tough GDs. You gave it your all every game and had a great season Emma, well done! Amy Eicker Amy was new to our team this season, and what a great addition!! Our GK, Amy had a great season, becoming a pro at intercepts and rebounds. A rock solid GK, making the GS work hard to get the ball every time! Also happy to fill in when needed elsewhere on the court, great teamwork! Amy trained well every week, always listening and happy to do the drills, a great season of netball Amy, well done! Holly Gemell Holly was for the most part our WD, but happy to fill in if needed pretty much anywhere else. An awesome season from Holly, great defence and so fast down the court always there to pass to. A great trainer as well, always keen and motivating everyone at training. You had a wonderful season Holly, great job!! Emily Hogarth Emily played Centre all season, and what a great season she had!! Playing C for a whole game every week is a big ask, and Emily did it perfectly. Always where she needed to be, from one end of the court to the other, never slowing down, well done, an amazing season Emily!! Piper Knight Piper was one of our wings always doing a great job moving the ball down the court as well as great support for the shooters around the circle. Also making a big impact when coming on after half-time in a few games, it s always good to have fresh feet out there in the second half! A great trainer, and a great support to all your team-mates, well done Piper. Lizzie Massey Lizzie was one of our shooters, as well as WA. Lizzie played beautifully wherever we put her, was solid in WA getting the ball into our shooters, and equally good when shooting. Always with a smile on her face, never letting the defence bother her too much some great shooting and circle work, well done Lizzie! Holly Palmer Holly played GD and what a great season!! Holly s never give up attitude in defence meant the opposition never had an easy time in the circle. Between intercepts and rebounds, Holly consistently turned the ball in our favour, as well as being great in attack, always there to move the ball down the court. Well done Holly, you had a wonderful season!! Wakehurst Team 10 (17D) WAKEHURST netball club The 17Ds comprised a group of girls who just wanted to play netball. They organised the team themselves. There were familiar faces Laura, Lydia, Emma, Michelle, Lauren, Demi and Amelia, together with the new recruits, Mollie and Siobhan, who were warmly welcomed. Although the girls thought they could coach themselves, Dave wouldn t have a bar of it and after a break from coaching duties last year was back to keep the girls focussed. After a bye in round one we won our first game and then lost our second to a Peninsula team that would be the only team we could not beat through the regular season. Finishing second on the table with only two losses was a fantastic effort for the girls playing their first year of Under 17s. PO Box 418 Belrose West Page 8
The first round of the finals saw us up against Peninsula again and we couldn t turn the regular season results around. The margin was 20 goals in that game (as it had been in the two previous matches). But it s not the semifinal result that counts. The girls bounced back in the final to secure another game against Peninsula in the Grand Final. Grand final day arrived, the 17Ds were just excited to be there. We had never come close to defeating Peninsula and no one was putting any money on us. The girls fronted up to the grand final and super coach Dave drew on all his motivational powers, promising to wear a Mr Potato Head outfit if the girls were successful. Peninsula thought they were entitled, but through clever coaching and our girls tenacious attitude we beat Peninsula by 2 goals in the grand final. A very satisfying result, matched perhaps only by seeing Dave wandering the Terrey Hills Tavern as Mr Potato Head! Thanks for a great season girls. We hope to see you all back again next year! 2017 Wakehurst Committee President Vice President Secretary Minutes Secretary Treasurer Registrar Coaches Convenor Umpires Convenor Gear Steward Uniforms Steward Duty Coordinator Nettas Coordinator Website Coordinator Briana Smith Adam Klemke Cathie Richardson Kerrie Rigby Julian Humphrey Karen Hayes Jenny Domjen Nicole Hayward Monique Barros & Robin Eicker Lisa D Urso Petah Condie Vacant Adam Klemke 2017 Registration Keep an eye out on our website and Facebook page for 2017 Registration details.
