Our senir students have already been t Warrnambl and we have had ur Under 15 s travel t Albury in the first week f the hlidays. It was als great t see the Heathfield BIG TEAM back in actin, supprting ur wn teams in sme huge battles during the week. The 15HG grand final was smething t watch as the Heathfield army came int actin and helped ur girls fight t a clse 5 set thriller. Our supprt fr each ther was fantastic. 2 Melburne Reprt 2012: (Frm HHS website December 2012) Heathfield High Schl tk a recrd 26 teams t the 29th Australian Vlleyball Schls Cup last week with utstanding results. The Special Interest Vlleyball (SIV) Squad were nce again successful n the natinal stage in Melburne bringing hme t the Adelaide Hills the Gerflr Cup as the mst successful schl cmpeting at the champinships. Heathfield High Schl has nw been cmpeting in this turnament in all 29 years, and up until this week had amassed a recrd setting 63 natinal titles. The cmpetitin has grwn frm just 34 teams in 1984 t a recrd 471 teams this year frm 139 schls, frm all states f Australia and verseas and cmpete in bth bys and girls acrss fur divisins. In the 8 Hnur divisins, Heathfield achieved Gld in U17 bys, Gld in U16 bys, Silver in U15 girls, Brnze in Open bys and Brnze in U15 bys and wn back the verall schls cup t reclaim the title f the best Vlleyball schl in Australia. Heathfield als gained a Gld and a Brnze in U15 Div 1 bys and Silver in U15 div 1 girls. Jamie Belsle, a member f the Heathfield U17 Hnurs girl s team, started the week with an amazing renditin f the Natinal Anthem in frnt f a packed stadium, filling the Aquatics sectin f the Melburne Sprts and Aquatics Centre. Over 2,000 peple were cmpletely mesmerized by her perfrmance fllwed by a spntaneus and sustained applause by every single persn present. They all felt they had witnessed smething very special. The week f games started very well with mst teams achieving wins early in the cmpetitin setting up a slid start fr the squad. By Wednesday many teams were in the tp half f their cmpetitin with several ensuring a tp six spt. Thursday in the Hnurs divisins the pen bys wn a spt in the semi-final defeating St Bernards in the mrning and in the afternn played the Semi-final. In an epic clse fught battle the lads went dwn t the eventual winners Aquinas. The pen girls played utstanding vlleyball t defeat Rssmyne but did nt have enugh premiership pints fr a tp 4 spt but finished a credible sixth place in Australia. The U17 bys and the U15 girls wn their semis t g straight int their grand finals while the U16 and U15 bys still had t play their semi-finals Friday mrning. Friday saw several Heathfield v Mazend matches with the Open bys taking brnze with a 3-1 win ver Mazend, the U15 bys lst the semi-final t eventual winners Mazend in a classic 5 setter but were able t grab brnze frm Brightn 3-0. The U16 bys wn a place in the final with a 3-0 win ver Billank and then defeated Mazend 3-0 fr gld. The U15 Hnur girls reversed their minr rund clash with Nambur with a 3-1 win in the semi-final t have anther g at the undefeated Brwn Plains State High Schl frm Queensland. The first tw sets went t the pwerful and plished Brwns Plains but the Heathfield squad started t gather frm watching ther finals and the girls dug in deep t win the next tw sets t be the first team fr the week t take them t five sets. T the credit f the players frm Queensland, they held their nerve t win the fifth set, despite an energy filled atmsphere with arund 300 peple cheering in clse quarters fr the yung Heathfield girls. The clsing ceremny fllwed with the 8 teams receiving their medals. Als Jake McIntyre wn a schlarship fr being the best referee in the cmpetitin. It was always ging t be extremely tight fr the verall schls cup as Eltham had several Hnur teams in grand finals including the Open bys and Open girls which are wrth mre pints than the ther age grups. Scres were read frm 8th place and it was mentined if Eltham had wn just ne f their finals then the rder f the final three teams wuld have been different, it was that clse. The squad erupted when the annuncement was finally made that Heathfield had wn the schls cup. Regaining the cup rewarded the hard wrk by the vlleyball staff, Lachlan Abbtt, Mia Heikknen and Mark Nielsen, all f the caches wh are all ex Heathfield students and f curse the players. Brightn were secnd and Eltham a very clse third. Sme 220 players, 26 caches mst f which are ex HHS SIV members, 26 managers and sme additinal lgistical and administratin staff participate in and crdinate the trip. Travelling back vernight last Friday night, the 6 buslads were greeted rusingly by waiting parents and well-wishers n Saturday mrning in the car park f the Mt Lfty Cmmunity Sprts Centre (n the grunds f HHS), as sleepy but very happy players emerged frm the buses t return hme and recver. 3 In week 2 in Term 1 these 3 students came int schl and spke t the Year 12 s at a lunchen regarding tips t well in year 12. We have been ding this with ur year 12 grups fr 13 years nw and the advice ur ex-students have been able t give has been excellent. They stressed the fact that it was gd t have sme dwn time away frm study playing vlleyball but had t keep rganized because f it. A hint t all the year 12 s this year! Marc, Elise and Chle are all attending Adelaide University this year and as a vlleyball cmmunity we wish them luck fr the future! Farewell Year 12 s: Every year we have t farwell ur Year 12 students as players frm Heathfield High Schl. We thank them fr their 5 years service t the vlleyball squad and their amazing leadership skills they have shwn thrughut their time in the Vlleyball prgram. Melburne 2013: We have already cmmenced planning fr the Natinals in Melburne. Buses and accmmdatin have been bked already and we are cntinuing t stay at Ormnd Cllege. The dates set fr this year s trip have us leaving Saturday 6.30am n the 7 th December and returning Saturday 7.30am n the 14 th December. The csts at the cllege have increased s the verall cst will be slightly higher. We have finalized the cst fr the trip at $950. Remember parents can start mnthly payments by cntacting the schl cashier. Beach Vlleyball Curts: The sun has been shining and the music playing this summer n ur utdr beach curts. Scial beach vlleyball cmpetitins have been running every Mnday and Thursday night with the trainee frm 2011 Chle running the event. Indra has been running grup persnal training sessins mst Mndays starting nice and early at 6 in the mrning! Classes have been making the mst f the sun we have had and have been battling it ut in lessn time t gain a place in the Bmbra turnament that was run n the 6 th f March. The primary schl kids have als been having a blast every Friday afternn after schl as part f their Spikezne prgram run at Mt Lfty. YEAR 12 s Cngratulatins t ur year 12 students wh nce again did themselves and the vlleyball prgram very prud. Marc Phillis, Elise Fale and Chle Bartel all did very well in all their subjects scring in the high 90 s when als dedicating afterschl trainings and Saturdays fr vlleyball. Bmbra Regan Fathers 3

4 Year 8 Badges: Bmbra Beach Vlleyball Titles: Why d Heathfield Vlleyballers have t earn their badge when players frm ther schls get their badge already sewn nt their unifrm? What is the stry behind that? Cngratulatins t the players wh wn the inaugural Bmbra Beach Vlleyball Champinships. Yur names will be engraved n the Bmbra surfbard trphy that was made by ne f ur past caches Verity Hanka. Thanks t the music department fr their fantastic music n the night. The vlleyball prgram has decided t dnate the entry fee frm the night t the Sammy D fundatin in memry f Lewis McPhersn, a year 12 Brightn Open Hnur Bys Liber frm last year wh sadly passed away ver the hliday break. We wuld als like t thank Mark and Kim McPhersn fr making the trip up t the beach curts fr the Bmbra evening. It made it a whle lt mre special fr the Heathfield Vlleyball cmmunity. In the early days the Heathfield badge was n the vlleyball tp when yu purchased the playing tp like every ther schl r club. One night years ag sme senir players went t see hw the Heathfield junirs were ding at Junir League. They came back t schl n the Mnday mrning very upset as they were nt impressed with the level f play and the attitude f sme f the junir players. They are strutting arund the place with Heathfield tps n thinking they are ht and that they are natinal champins when they are nt. We need them t have t wrk as hard as we d t jin the Heathfield vlleyball squad, and nt have it as an autmatic right just because yu have been selected int the Heathfield prgram. The squad leaders then decided that perhaps the badge shuld be the defining mment that the senir players in the squad accept the yunger players. It then became a traditin that if a junir player was awarded the badge they shuld have t play in a Heathfield team fr sme weeks and shw they have met the fllwing criteria: 1. The player must be enthusiastic and be mtivated t learn frm the cach. 2. The player must be a team player and must shw evidence that the team cmes first. 3. The player must have learnt hw Heathfield teams celebrate pints and can d it. 4. The player must be tugh and can play the Heathfield way. 5. That the senir players wuld be pleased t have these players represent them and the Heathfield reputatin in bth State and Natinal cmpetitins. These tw students shwed the abve attributes thrugh training and the Nrwd challenge leading t the decisin by the vlleyball staff that they deserved their badges. This was an under 15 s turnament s mst f the year 8 s and a cuple f year 9 s participated in the event. It was great t see the year 8 s enjy their first vlleyball turnament playing seven 30 minute games ver the curse f the day. In the end the 3 girl s teams came 5th, 8th and 9th ut f 9 teams cmpeting and the by s teams came 3rd, 4th and 7th ut f 7 teams. A big thankyu t Stuart, Lachy, Mia and Mark fr giving up their Sunday t be at the event. Als a big thankyu t the senir students wh vlunteered t cach teams at the turnament. 5 Warrnambl Turnament: Heathfield tk a senir bys and girls team t cmpete in the Warrnambl Vlleyball turnament n the March lng weekend. The bys team cached by Stuart and managed by Peter had a great start lsing nly 1 set t Bendig in the 4 pl matches that they played. They finished tp f their pl meaning they wuld then crssver and play 2nd f the ther pl the Blckheads. The bys prided themselves n their plished passing led by Liber Damien Nichlls which in turn gave ur setters Jrdan Cltti and Tim Pfeiffer a chance t set an attack that had the ppsitin blckers fled and were punished by sme big hitting frm Regan Fathers, Camern Salt and James Frlw. The bys then fund themselves playing Bendig the nly team that they had lst a set t in the Grand Final. Lead by sme big blcking frm Simn Grey and Matt Mre the bys gt ut t a quick lead winning the first set. Bendig then challenged playing sme great flr defence which tk sme experienced hitting frm senir player Henry Clugh t help the team win the secnd set. Damien Nichlls again lead the passing fr the team nt making an errr and fr the first time in the turnament passing at a 3 average. The bys pushed thrugh the last half f the set n a 13-2 run t eventually be crwned winners f the Div 2 Men s Warrnambl cmpetitin fr the first time ever! The yung girls grup led by senir players Mia Suraharj, Brittany Schnider and Nikiesha Lamming-Slade were ut t shw what they had t ffer against the lder and mre experienced teams that they were up against in the Div 1 cmpetitin. The girls played very clse matches and were unlucky t finish with 2 wins and 2 lsses after the pl rund matches. The passing frm bth Liber s Ella Mansell and Jamie Belsle was imprving each match giving the yung year 10 setter Elsie Dawes a chance t set sme great balls t her utside hitters. Mary Shaw and Mia Suraharj lead the way killing ff balls with the team being helped by sme gd blcking frm frm Nikiesha lamming-slade, Brittany Schnider and Bnnie Blight. The girls were unlucky t finish 4th in their pl, being equal n 2 wins and 2 lsses with 3rd psitin but having a lwer set percentage. This meant that they played 4th place f the ther pl fr their final game f the turnament against a team named Suthern Crss. Maddy Mark-Seymur prduced sme great hitting finding gaps in the ppsitin blck and defence. Like she had been ding all weekend Mia Suraharj gave her hitters the best pssible chance t kill the ball thrugh her setting giving the girls team a win in their final match meaning they came 7th in the cmpetitin. A special mentin t Mia Suraharj wh was elected as the Mst Valuable Player in their Div 1 cmpetitin fr the secnd year in a rw! 6 Gldball Weekend: (Frm HHS website 16th & 17th March 2013) Anther fantastic cmpetitin with all players imprving dramatically ver the weekend. The Nrwd teams were just a little mre experienced in the Grand Finals with Heathfield taking the first set in bth matches, drpping the secnd in bth finals and ging dwn in bth deciding sets. Thanks must g t the students wh cached all weekend, als gaining valuable caching experience as well as develping the big teams cncept that Heathfield are renwned fr. Als thanks t Mikasa wh dnated a set f Knee pads t every player in the winning teams and thanks als t the many parents wh helped in the canteen all weekend. The tp Heathfield Bys team putting up a Triple Blck against Mt Lfty Reds Natinal under 15 s (Albury NSW): (Frm HHS Website 15 th 18 th April 2013) Heathfield travelled t Albury in the first week f the hlidays with 3 girls and 2 by s teams. A Mt Lfty Reds team travelled with the grup fr the first time and played well all week t finish 8th verall. The Girls teams finished 1st, 7th and 13th and the bys 4th and 5th. Everyne made massive imprvements ver the week and the Heathfield spirit was well and truly alive with fantastic cheering all week, but in particular the finals. The girl s semi-final against a pwerful QLD 1 side was an epic five set battle, finishing with Lucy Ambagtsheer jump flat serving unplayable bmbs fr the last 5 pints t give Heathfield the win in the fifth. All f the Nrwd squad jined in with the Heathfield squad half way thrugh the furth set t raise the rf with nise as their girls had just beaten QLD 2 t bk a spt in the final. They then played each ther in the final with great serving frm bth teams dminating the game. Nrwd tk the first 2 sets with Heathfield shwing unbelievable reslve t take the next 2 sets and then take the fifth The bys battled QLD 2 fr the brnze and gt ff t a flyer with a 25-8 first set. QLD then reduced errrs and hit well t verpwer the yung lads t win 3-1. Heathfield cmbined with the Nrwd squad t cheer the Nrwd bys in the Grand Final against QLD 1, but the strength f the tall Queenslanders was t much fr the Nrwd bys. The week was then tpped by SA being named the Champin State, rewarding the unbelievable effrts f all f the Nrwd and Heathfield teams. 7 Heathfield Vlleyballers heat it up n the Beach Suth Australia has again triumphed in the Australian Junir Beach Vlleyball Champinships winning the Andy Burdin Shield fr best perfrmed state at the recent champinships held at Suth Melburne Beach. This result was helped by the cntributins f a number f Heathfield High Schl vlleyball students and caches. The Andy Burdin Shield is awarded t the best perfrming verall state and Suth Australia claimed the title fr the 9 th time in the 13 years the event has been running. Alternating between different states each year the turnament returned t Victria and players were treated t all f Melburne s famus varying weather cnditins. Sunshine was interspersed between rain, thunderstrms and extreme winds but it gave players a true beach vlleyball experience battling the many different elements and weather cnditins. The turnament intrduced tw new cncepts in 2013 bth with much success, changing t a 5 day event up frm the previus 3 and als intrducing an Under 15 categry t the already existing U17, U19 and U23 divisins fr bth male and female athletes. The Under 15 age grup was a 4-a-side turnament with all ther divisins the traditinal 2-a side frmat. Heathfield Vlleyball prgram, fresh frm being crwned verall natinal schl champins in indr vlleyball last December, supplied 7 players and 3 caches t the successful Suth Australian team. Despite still being eligible fr the U19 divisin Malachi Murch teamed up with SASI athlete Russell Mre t finish 2 nd in the U23 Men s divisin, prducing sme utstanding vlleyball thrughut the week. Simn Gray and Jrdan Cltti, wh represented Australia last December in Fiji, imprved steadily thrughut the week and played in an all-suth Australian final in the Under 17 Men s divisin. Unfrtunately they were beaten in a very clse 3 set final t finish 2 nd and giving Suth Australia a very impressive first and secnd in the divisin. Regan Fathers als finished 17 th in the U17 men s divisin with sme spectacular play thrughut the turnament. Maddy Mark-Seymur teamed with Jess Jnes t finish 9 th in Under 17 wmen s and with the bnus f having anther 2 years in the age grup shuld build n her encuraging results. The newly created Under 15 divisin was entered with sme uncertainty frm all states but turned ut t be a great display f enthusiastic beach vlleyball with a psitive sign fr beach vlleyball s future. Jayden Fathers and Tara Fathers bth claimed gld fr Suth Australia in the bys and girls divisins respectively. Heathfield Vlleyball teacher Mark Nielsen was successful in caching the fur men s Under 17 pairs frm Suth Australia, cming hme with a gld and silver medal. Jasn Ptts was respnsible fr SA s under 19 men s teams and Verity Hanka cached the under 15 bys and girls teams t gld medal victries. Overall Suth Australia wn 6 medals with 3 gld and 3 silver medals. Renault Natinal Beach Vlleyball Series A number f Heathfield athletes have been successful n the Renault Natinal Beach Vlleyball Series with events held at Crnulla Beach (NSW), Surfers Paradise (QLD), Scarbrugh (WA), St Kilda (Vic) and Glenelg (SA). Sam Behm has cntinued his impressive run f beach vlleyball success with 2 nd place in the first tw runds f the natinal tur fr Australia s best beach vlleyball players. Teaming with Cle Durant, a new partner frm WA, Sam was using the tur t try ut a new partnership with the pssibility f cntinuing the pairing n this seasns Wrld Tur. Yung Malachi Murch, a prduct f Heathfield High Schl s Vlleyball Prgram, was als successful in the early runds f this year s natinal tur with tw 5 th place finishes, very respectable fr such a yung athlete.
