The United States Department f Educatin (USDE) views the large infusin f Federal funds int the SIG prgram thrugh the American Recvery and Reinvestment Act f 2009 (ARRA) as a histric pprtunity t address ne f the mst intractable challenges fr America s educatin system: turning arund r clsing dwn ur Natin s persistently lwest-achieving schls. USDE apprved Maryland s Flexibility Plan in May 2012 included Maryland s SIG I schls as Pririty Schls. The fllwing schls were als added as Pririty Schls because f Maryland s apprved Flexibility Plan but were funded with Title I, Part A funds nly: Baltimre Civitas Middle/High Schl, Baltimre IT Academy and Steuart Hill Academic Academy Purpse f the SIG I Year 4 Mnitring and Fiscal Teams Third Onsite Visit: As apprved by USDE, MSDE, thrugh SIG Mnitring Teams, will cnduct three nsite mnitring visits annually in each LEA that have Pririty/SIG Schls t ensure that the LEA is implementing its interventin mdel fully and effectively in Maryland s Tier I and Tier II schls. As part f the third nsite visit, a SIG Mnitring Team will interview members f the LEA Central Supprt Team which is the leadership bdy fr planning, implementing, supprting, mnitring, and evaluating the LEA s apprved SIG Plan. In additin and n a different day, a MSDE Fiscal Team will mnitr the LEA s budgets. Cmpare yur previus schl year f implementatin t schl year BCPSS Central Supprt Team Interview Questins and Respnses Augusta Fells Savage Institute f Visual Arts High Schl The schl is identified t clsed; Clsure date has nt been determined Challenges with staffing changes There was a change in principal leadership this schl year. Because f this change, the district said there were SIG activities that did nt ccur such as the schl s summer pprtunities. The schl s enrllment drpped significantly this year. The schl changed its bell schedule. The district believes the Breakthrugh Center s instructinal supprt has helped the teachers at the schl. The team als included the special educatrs at the schl in all in-services. The schl has a new assistant principal that has demnstrated great supprt at the schl. The schl is fully implemented the district high schl curriculum. Staff members are participating in the Aspiring Leaders Prgram. The schl is fcusing n infrmatinal texts with students. The schl has an effective partnership with University f Maryland in its scial wrk prgram. This partnership has helped significantly the schl s culture and climate. There are cntinued cmmunity partnerships with the arts. Bker T. The district believes the schl culture and climate is better, but there is cntinued wrk needs t be dne. The schl will strengthen PBIS in middle grades next schl year. The schl has implemented and will cntinue t implement alternative suspensins t reduce suspensins. The schl is cmpliant with its special educatin requirements. The schl uses data analysis t individually track academic prgress f its students. The schl cntinues t imprve its middle schl prgram. Calvertn Elementary/Middle Schl Assistant Principal transitined successfully t Principal Previus Principal is wrking with the schl as a cnsultant with the schl s restart partner The schl is implementing Agile Minds and Cmpass Learning. The district believes the schl culture and climate a significantly imprvement and is the mst cnsistent f the district s SIG schls. The schl is fcusing n the C-teaching Mdel and Cllabrative Planning. The district believes there are strng systems in place at the schl. The schl requires that all staff n the schl s Leadership Team teach a class. The schl has implemented a Weekly Twn Meeting fr all students in each grade level.
