New Gvernance: Our fficial start t the new Gvernance was at the 2016 AGM - but we see that there is a lt mre t get it t functin as suppsed t. We als want t insure that we get ut t each District as part f the prmised Member Engagement cmmitment. We understand and haven t frgtten that real Hckey management starts with yu here at the MHA level. We want t cntinue supprting yu with this. Recruitment & Retentin: With the understanding that ice availability is a majr factr in hindering what peple can d, we are wndering if MHA s have actual Recruitment Plans utside f the usual things like Ess Fun Days, etc. and d yu make it a fcus each year? BC Hckey des have a plan but it isn t really active at this time and we are interested in what this District needs supprt with? In Campbell River we make an effrt t try t make it easy fr 2 sprt families. Keeping in mind that Recreatin teams have different expectatins we try t keep it fun and affrdable. We have a gd selectin f used gear t share plus we can als send families t Re-Play Sprts wh send CRMHA the bill. We make a cnscius effrt t think abut barriers and hw we can help remve them

Gld River has an extremely small budget smaller assciatins culd really use the help Lake Cwichan: Understands families have limited time and financial resurces. Hckey als has a pr reputatin which is smething that we have all been wrking n as a District t help imprve. Alberni Valley: Offers the 1 st Shift prgram which is ging very well. As fr gear we help where we can and when needed. We try t deal with parents right away wh are n Caches, Refs and thers t drive twards a better envirnment. Try t fcus n building player numbers up frm the bttm and create a gd fundatin District: Feels smetimes BC Hckey is nt always User Friendly. We have truble determining which staff d what and ften d nt get replies when asking fr directin. VIAHA identified we had sme abusive parent issues and brught in Parent RIS. After wrking with BC Hckey n it, we were surprized that just prir t the launch BC Hckey brught in the Sprtsmanship Starts in the Stands prgram - with n mentin f it while we were wrking with them n Parent RIS! S nw Parents and MHA s are burden with helping t deliver 2 prgrams. Our Parent RIS Requirement is wrking and issues are currently way dwn. BCH: This is a new wrld and we want t put a better face n BC Hckey. We want t mve frward, supprt yu better and wrk tgether. Campbell River: Finds nly a small percent f parents are truble and maybe we need t stp finger pinting. Peninsula: Keep it simple fr thse that vlunteer t help make the sprt happen. Our ambassadrs are als ur vlunteers and its becming t much fr them. BC Hckey: Nrth East District tells us they spend just as much time, if nt mre, recruiting vlunteers as they d players. In many MHA s yu see it s nt just the player numbers they lack its peple t help it run as well. Lake Cwichan: Culd use assistance in getting mre parents t vlunteer BC Hckey: Our Branch can lk at develping ways t encurage vlunteers d yu want us t spend time n this? District The early push we all experienced frm BC Hckey t have vlunteers certified sner this year will mst likely cntinue. It s imprtant fr the kids t have qualified peple caching and vlunteering. The ld way f allwing vlunteers until December (when the seasn is ½ ver) t becme certified in the basics is a risk and insurance issue fr everyne. BC Hckey: Example when yu send yur child t swimming lessns there is an expectatin that the instructr is certified befre yur child gets in the pl Saanich: We need mre ice! We have t set a limit each seasn f 500 players hwever we are beginning t ntice lwer numbers cming in the back dr s a little cncerned abut the future. We have begun ging int the schls t recruit kids t cme ut. VRC: Minr Hckey needs t integrate with the schl district further. Help use up all the day ice that sits un-tapped. BC Hckey: Hw can we help with this? District: There are lgistics invlved t cnsider as well busing students t rinks frm schls, strage f equipment Idea t prmte the 1 st shift prgram and use the up-cming 2018 Wrld Jr s as a stage t encurage Minr Hckey participatin. BC Hckey did this with the Wrld Wmen s Hckey in Kamlps and scheduled the BC Hckey Female Champinships in the same lcatin at the same time. It prved very successful and helped with ur bid fr the Wrld Jrs. Saanich: The High Perfrmance Certificatin requirement fr Bantam T1 Caches is an issue. It asks Caches t take ver a week ff wrk t attend. Then include the csts invlved t attend such as htels, fd, and registratin etc. (which is smetimes cvered by the MHA). We called BC Hckey fr assistance n this and never heard back. Fr the past few years the curse has filled up fast with Jr. Caches and ut f Prvince Caches. Space runs ut and ur Caches are ut f luck. Barry gave ut his cell # fr when peple are in a bind and have nt heard back frm the Office. Cwichan Valley: Allw lder ages t attend the 1 st Shift Prgram nt just the little guys. Scial Media was ur strngest and mst successful tl fr getting new peple t register

District: Suggested that it wuld be gd fr all registered hckey players t have Skate Canada levels available t them smehw via regular practices and included as part f their MHA career. Find a way t cmbine the tw prgrams smehw. Cach Develpment: District: Caches with Dev 1 Cmpetitive Qualificatin are nt able t Cach Recreatinal Teams. Why is this? BC Hckey: We knw Cach Curses are set at the levels fr which they are t instruct. Caches learn that there are different appraches t either ne. There is a difference. District: Feels Hckey Canada needs t take anther lk at this. BC Hckey said they will take it frward with Hckey Canada District: Fr the past few years the Bantam T1 High Perfrmance Cach Curse has filled up fast with Jr. Caches and ut f Prvince Caches. Space runs ut and ur Caches are ut f luck. Victria: Caches need mre help with nt nly getting certified but with carrying n their develpment. We need a system t help augment their learning BC Hckey: Lking int a Reginal Centers where we have Reginal Cach Crdinatrs wrking t meet needs Other: Many felt many clinics were unrganized and nt cndensed enugh Female Hckey Develpment: District: The mmentum has been built but the challenge is that it s hard t keep it ging with s many females still playing ced. The Female Prgram is nt getting any tractin because f this and therefre teams are frmed and pieced tgether with different ages, which causes ther issues. Over ½ the females in ur District are playing ced. Ske: Sme Ske families feel if they put their daughter in Female Hckey they will have t travel far mre than if they play ced. Anther issue is because f the lack f numbers yu have a player wh has lts f experience playing with players wh dn t which hinders the develpment f sme. The dual card rule VIAHA put in place this seasn actually backfired and we have fewer females playing Female hckey because f it Campbell River: Our Female Crdinatr Denis Bellevance is excellent he has built a Female prgram specifically fr the girls and it s grwing very well. The travel t games is smething ur players lk frward t and get excited abut s this is nt an issue fr us. District: As lng as ur MHA s cntinue t supprt females playing ced the number f female teams will cntinue t be hindered. In the suth - if all females were t play n female teams they culd have their wn league and wuld nt have t travel as much - except fr any wanted exhibitin games and turneys. Victria: We as an MHA ask that ur Female players register as Female 1 st and if they supprt that female team VMHA supprts them by allwing them t dual rster n a ced team if they desire. In playffs the Female Team has t be their first pririty. Idea t have mre female play days t shwcase District: Mre funding is needed frm BC Hckey t prmte female Hckey and lcal crdinatrs need t be engaged in the prcess. Zne Team Cncept: BC Hckey explained the current Pilt Prject that is happening this seasn with the Okanagan (OMAHA) The Majr Midget mdel and cncept has been used t prvide every player with access t a higher skill level n matter where they live The district has been brken int znes and players frm MHA s within each applicable zne can try ut fr a team. Gd success s far and wrking well fr the individuals that live in smaller twns

If Districts want t jin even later (say April) it s k - but may mean certain things might nt be available t them such as new unifrms, etc. This wuld be fr Midget AAA & Bantam AAA District: What is the cst per player turning ut t be? We have seen $2,500 per player up t $5,000 per player. BC Hckey: It s a Team decisin yu can turn dwn unifrms and sme ther items. If yu decide t participate all yur T1 teams wuld be part f the pilt prject as wuld yur T2. Nt sure abut T3 OMAHA created a separate District Zne Bard f Directrs that wrked tgether t helped the prgram get ff the grund and nw perate. Affiliate Players wuld cme frm the applicable zne District ur district has actually already been ding this with Female it s basically the same mdel as Female Reginal. BC Hckey: It limits the sneaking arund f players and families t play at a higher tier utside f their residential bundaries. Keep an pen mind when deciding The District & BC Hckey wuld run the Zne teams nt the MHA s District: We will discuss this later as a District under New Business after BC Hckey has left. Reginal Supprt and Administratin: Our Administratin Guide is nw up-dated Online game reprting has gne well We are currently testing an electrnic game sheet with the MML teams which can be dne n an i-pad Bard hpes t endrse the Reginal Center cncept in 2017 District: Wuld like t have sme way t see what each BC Hckey Staff member des s we knw wh t cntact fr specific things. Webinars if yu dn t sign up t attend them yu can always watch them later as they are recrded. The New Sciety Act Changes Webinar is a very imprtant ne t watch highly recmmend yu watch it. Parents need nt wrry that their child will nt be prepared Hckey Canada Player Develpment Mdel Survey: Ran ut f time and item was nt cvered Other: District: Are the Junir & NHL Draft deadlines changing mving up? BC Hckey: There has been a lt mre talk abut it at the Hckey Canada table lately. We hear the NHL is wrking n the NCAA as well. Jr player ages wuld be year lds and NHL wuld mve t 21 and up. By drafting an lder player it pses less risk fr them investment wise Our midget teams wuld be a lt strnger if all 17 years lds had t stay in the Minr & Majr levels Age wise - Jr B takes a lt f BC s yunger players whereas Jr A takes mre ut f Prvince players BC Hckey hped the meeting tday was gd fr everyne we see that t have it incrprated within regular meeting is maybe nt the best timewise and des nt allw fr the invite f thers. The regular VIAHA meeting cntinued ADOPTION OF VIAHA MEETING AGENDA: MOTION: M/S (Chris Atchisn/Al Walker) t adpt the Agenda f the Jan 8 th, 2017 Meeting as presented ADOPTION OF THE PREVIOUS VIAHA MINUTES: MOTION: M/S (Chad Rintul/Harld Blmenthal) t apprve the Oct 22, 2016 minutes as presented. CORRESPONDANCE: Nne OLD BUSINESS: Nne REPORTS: Initiatin Prgram/Crss Ice Lead (Nrth) Brian Sugiyama: (Mved up frm h ) Issues and Challenges: Sme parents & caches have nt ttally embraced the Crss Ice Hckey initiative, feeling that all hckey must be 5 n 5 n a 200 ft ice surface. These peple have nt accepted that skill develpment, and FUNdamentals with a prperly sized practice and game envirnment is part f Hckey Canada s Lng Term Athlete Develpment. VIAHA must ensure that all MHA s adhere t VIAHA guidelines fr these players by fllwing guidelines and the terminlgy. Equally skilled teams are required f ages 4-5 years (H1), 6 years (H2), 7 years(h3), and 8 years (H4). It has been difficult fr inter assciatin games and jambree/turnament rganizers t ensure parity f teams. VIAHA may wish t prvide sme guidelines t MHA s with respect t game fficials by ensuring that apprpriate executive members have cpies f and fllw the BCH Officiating guidelines fr Crss Ice Hckey Sme parents and Safety Persnnel have expressed safety cncerns in Dressing rms when 4 H1-H4 teams with 2 cncurrent games change in 2 dressing rms. With each team having players plus parents/siblings there culd be peple in each dressing rm. Presentatins, Meetings and Clinics: BC Hckey meeting f all Crss Ice Leads was held Octber 14 & 15 in Richmnd. Representatives frm Hckey Canada were als in attendance. At the request f the lcal MHA crdinatr a presentatin was set up fr parents, caches and MHA executives in Cmx fr CVMHA n December 6. The presentatin included infrmatin frm BCH website, t frm US Hckey n Crss Ice. Questins that have surfaced abut Crss Ice were discussed amng parents and caches. A H1-H4 caches meeting is scheduled fr January 18 in Nanaim. Mre meetings and n ice sessins can be scheduled arund all Nrth Island cmmunities. An NCCP Cach 1 pilt can be delivered t H1-H2 upcming caches and incming parents wh intend t cach. The nly cst t the hst MHA is ice fr the n ice sessin. I am requesting MHA Presidents help ut mre here rather than keep sending in s asking abut the situatin is t supprt knwing the Officer did the best they culd d and assigned a suspensin accrdingly. If the cach r manager takes the time t read the handbk mst f the questins culd be answered. Flks have t be reminded that a referee s decisin is final and nt subject t an appeal. Still dealing with push back in regards t Nvice Crss Ice. Team frmatin shuld be under the H1, H2, H3 & H4 frmat. Playff scheduling fr Island League is beginning and I have asked all the participating MHAs t supply the required game slts Discipline: There have been 29 Match r Grss Miscnduct penalties with 2 mre cming in this mrning. All have been cncluded with the exceptin f ne which is still under investigatin by a VIAHA Vice President. This is ten higher than at this pint last year Travel: There have been 219 requests fr Interdistrict Travel thus far this year and I expect anther influx with year-end turnaments cming up. Kings vs. Strm, Ice Sessin and Ht stve Mentring Weekends: Nanaim, Oceanside, Cmx Valley & Campbell River have been dne. Pwell River next weekend and Tri-Prt this weekend this Prt Alberni befre the end f the mnth Wrking n Prvincial Champinship Supervisry Assignments Nanaim is hsting the Peewee T1 Champinships, Oceanside the Female Midget A Champinships and Pwell River the Bantam T2 Champinships. Cats eye Galie Masks: It s a CSA apprved helmet but the masks have been swapped ut. A few ccurrences reprted t me. NEW BUSINESS: a) Zne Team Pilt : Cmmittee members discussed the related inf prvided abve within BC Hckey discussin tpics VIAHA cntacted all the new Hst MHA s in OMAHA and received feedback frm 2 f them. One f which was very instrumental in getting it ff the grund.
