6 BEFORE THE RACE GETTING STARTED 1.A) T D List Start recruiting a 12 r 6 persn team, plus three vlunteers. Register and pay fr the team nline at befre the deadline. Register all team members nline at befre deadline. Register all vlunteers nline at befre deadline. Or make the Pay fr Vlunteers payment. Request start time befre deadline. 1.B) Organizing a Team The tw team types t chse frm are regular team (12 peple running 3 legs each) and ultra team (6 peple running 6 legs each). Each regular team will be classified as a male, female, r mixed team and will cmpete in ne f several divisins. Each ultra team will cmpete as a male, female r mixed team. Here are sme tips that will make rganizing a team easy If yu dn't knw 12 runners dn't wrry. Yu prbably knw 3 r 4 and they prbably knw 3 r 4. Teams made up this way (with friends f friends) are ften the mst fun. By the end f the race yu'll have 11 great friends! Find smene that is a gd leader and excited abut the event. Put this persn in charge f filling ne f the vans. Nw bth f yu just need t find 5 runners instead f 11. If yu d nt have 12 runners r d nt want 12 runners, n prblem. Yu can have any number f runners between 4 and 12 (see sectin 8). Any team with less than 4 runners needs t cntact the Race Directr abut prcedures and rules fr the race. Set a date by which yu want t send in registratin and begin cllecting entry fees frm members f the team. Runners will feel mre cmmitted nce they fill ut an entry frm and give yu mney. Many teams cmmit friends, but since the friends never pay r fill anything ut, they dn't feel cmmitted. When it cmes time t sign up they haven't trained and they back ut. Yur team needs t have an average f at least an 11 minute per mile pace in rder t finish the curse in the specified timeline (This is yur TEAM pace nt yur individual pace) Once yu have a few firm cmmitments register the team. Again, this will make the team feel mre cmmitted. Yu shuldn't have a hard time finding the rest f yur runners. If wrse cmes t wrse, there are always last minute runners lking fr teams thrugh ur team finders (see 1.C). 1.C) Online Team Finders If yur team is lking fr runners, the team captain can use the Find a Runner tl n the tp f their team page. Simply fill ut the inf f what yu are lking fr, i.e. gender, age range and pace, then click the Seach buttn. This will ppulate a list f runners in that pace range. Yu can send them a message and ask if they are interested. Be sure t include yur cntact infrmatin! Lking t jin a team? We recmmend using ur Team Finder tl lcated n the bttm right f every runner s prfile page. Simply click the bx indicating yu are available t jin a team and fill ut the requested infrmatin. Teams lking fr runners will be able t find yu in the Ragnar Database. 6

Reach ut and cmmunicate with runners and teams n either page. 1.D) Getting Ready Once a team has been rganized we recmmend the team meet several times prir t the event t wrk ut lgistics. It may be helpful t discuss the fllwing things: Cmmunicatin between vehicles. Sme segments f the race have limited cell phne cverage. Make a list f all cell phne numbers and be sure that everyne brings a cell phne charger. Sme prviders will get better service than thers s try t have a variety f carriers. We als recmmend the use f tw-way radis. What t d if runners get t an exchange and the next runner isn t there. What t d if a runner and/r vehicle gets lst. Where t get gas. Where t eat. What types f fd and drink t bring alng. What types f clthing and equipment everyne shuld bring. Weather is uncertain; be prepared fr ht and cld weather extremes as well as rainy weather. Running at night, and if anyne is willing t run extra miles as a run pacer. 1.E) Start Times Start times are based n accurate pace predictins, s it is critical fr a successful event that each runner has an accurate 10K pace in their prfile. This shuld be frmatted as minutes per mile, i.e. 10 min/ mile pace. T accurately prject a team s pace, take each individual runner s 10k race pace and calculate an average team pace. Teams that misrepresent their pace will be penalized. Accurate paces allw us t place teams in starting slts that create the least amunt f cngestin n the curse. T be assigned a start time, captains need t d the fllwing: 1. Lg int yur accunt, 2. Access yur team s prfile page and ensure all paces are present and accurate, 3. Yu must have 8 f yu 12 runners n a regular team r 4 f 6 fr Ultra teams in rder t be assigned a start time. It is extremely imprtant that the pace submitted fr each team is accurate. If individuals have nt participated in a cmpetitive 10k recently, we strngly encurage them t run ne befre submitting a team pace. Alternatively, cnsider getting tgether as a team fr a training run at a cmpetitive 10k pace. PLEASE NOTE: Yur team needs t have an average f at least an 11 minute mile pace in rder t finish the curse in the specified timeline. Shuld yur team fall far enugh behind pace that yu are falling behind curse clsure times listed in the Ragnar app, Ragnar staff will wrk with yur team t get yu back within the curse supprt limits. If yu have cncerns abut this fr yur team, please make sure and cntact the Race Directr. 1.F) Training Gd training will help make this an enjyable race as well as prevent injury. A training guide is available HERE n ur website. As with all training prgrams, please cnsult a physician first. 7

8 2. REGISTRATION 2.A) Team Registratin Registratin is available nline and shuld be cmpleted by the Team Captain. Simply click the Register link next t the race n the Registratin webpage and fllw the instructins. After cmpleting the registratin prcess the team captain will receive an cnfirming registratin and assigning team number. A nn-refundable entry fee is due at the time f nline registratin. 2.B) Team Name When selecting a team name, please remember that Ragnar Relays are family friendly events. Teams will travel thrugh sensitive cmmunities and schls. Teams are als encuraged t bring their families, friends, and supprt crew t the finish line. We encurage yu t think abut hw children might respnd t yur team name when the annuncer calls it ver the ludspeaker. Please help us in respecting everyne at the event and the cmmunities wh graciusly hst us. If we feel yur Team name is inapprpriate yu will receive an frm the Race Directr asking yu t select anther name. 2.C) Individual Team Member Registratin Once the team has been registered and paid fr nline the team captain has until the substitutin deadline t register each individual team member nline (see registratin deadlines n page 5 fr mre inf). If the team registers during the late registratin perid, then team members will need t be registered within tw weeks f the date that the team registered. A separate nline frm must be filled ut fr each team member and each team member must read and accept the nline waiver agreement. 2.D) Signing Online Waiver All team members must sign a waiver in rder t participate. Yu must first be assciated with a team t sign the waiver. Yu shuld receive the waiver in cnjunctin with the team invite sent t yu by yur team captain. When accepting the invite, yu will als have the pprtunity t sign the waiver. 2.E) Participant Age Restrictins Any participant under the age f 18 must have a parent r legal guardian sign a waiver. Any vehicle with ne r mre participant(s) under the age f 18 must als have at least 1 adult (25 r lder) preferably serving as either a driver r safety fficer in the vehicle. The individual ver 25 desn t have t be a runner but can be. Thse under 12 years f age are prhibited. Ragnar will cnsider frmal requests fr extrardinary circumstances thrugh the Race Directr. Specific rules apply fr High Schl Teams, please see sectin 6.C. 2.F) Substitutins/Additins If team members need t be changed (substituted r added), the team captain must lg nt the team page and simply click n the Invite Runners buttn and fill ut the new team member s infrmatin. There is n charge fr substitutins/additins made befre the substitutin/additin deadline. Late substitutins/additins can be made fr a $10 r $20 fee per substitutin r additin (see registratin deadlines n page 5 fr exact dates). Substitutins/additins can be made at the start line but the runner must be present t sign the waiver. Yu will be charged $20 per substitutins n race day. 2.G) Refund & Transfer Plicy Refund Plicy: All entry fees are nn-refundable. Transfer Plicy: Teams may transfer their registratin t any Ragnar Relay r Ragnar Trail, excluding sld ut Ragnar Events, within 12 mnths f the Ragnar Relay fr which they were riginally registered. 8

9 Teams may nly transfer a registratin nce. When a transfer is made, the riginal price paid will be applied t the new relay registratin fee. In cases where the new relay registratin fee is mre than the riginal price paid, the team will be required t pay the difference. In cases where the new relay registratin fee is less than the riginal price paid the difference will nt be refunded. If a transfer request is made after regular registratin ends, a $400 transfer fee ($275 fr ultra) will be deducted frm the riginal price paid. If a Ragnar Relay reaches wait list status, as indicated by a wait list buttn n the Ragnar Relay Registratin webpage, teams may nly transfer t anther Ragnar Relay if a replacement team is fund. If a transfer is made after a Ragnar Relay is in wait list status, a $400 transfer fee ($275 fr ultra) will be deducted frm the riginal price paid. All transfers must be apprved tw weeks prir t the day befre the race starts (Thursday). 3. VOLUNTEERS Each team is required t fill three (3) vlunteer shifts, by recruiting the vlunteers themselves r paying fr the vlunteers t be recruited thrugh Ragnar and its fficial charity. Failure t fulfill vlunteer requirements will result in disqualificatin. Disqualified teams will be pulled frm all results. 3.A) Each Team Must Prvide 3 Vlunteers If any ne team member lives within 100 miles f the curse, it is mandatry fr the team t supply 3 vlunteers. Vlunteer sign-up will pen up apprximately six weeks befre the race (see vlunteer signup dates n page 5). Nn-lcal teams are exempt frm this rule if all team members live at least 100 miles away frm all parts f the curse. Once all team members are registered, please cntact the vlunteer crdinatr at NiagaraVlunteers@ragnarrelay.cm t request a vlunteer plicy exemptin. All vlunteers must: Be at least 16 years ld Individually register fr a shift n the Ragnar website during the vlunteer registratin perid nted n page 5. Vlunteer shifts are first cme, first chice. Captains may nt reserve shifts fr team vlunteers. Prvide their wn transprtatin t and frm their assigned lcatin Wear their fficial vlunteer hat while at their assigned lcatin Be physically able t perfrm their assigned duties Be willing t fulfill any assigned vlunteer time Be willing t fulfill their entire shift at an assigned lcatin Prvide their wn fd and drink during shift (we will have water bttles fr vlunteers) 3.B) Pay Fr Vlunteers Teams als have the ptin f paying $120 per vlunteer fr Ragnar t recruit vlunteers alng the curse. Ragnar s partner charity/charities will receive a payment when they prvide a vlunteer fr yur team. In rder t be eligible fr this ptin, teams must make their payments nline by the deadline (see pay fr vlunteer deadlines fr exact dates n page 6). Yu will be charged $120 per unfilled vlunteer requirement n race day. 3.C) SWAT Vlunteers & Exchange Managers Ragnar will als accept a limited number f SWAT vlunteers and Exchange Managers. SWAT vlunteers will be scheduled fr a lnger shift with mre respnsibilities. A single SWAT vlunteer fulfills all three 9

10 vlunteer requirements fr a team. Exchange Managers manage ne exchange pint alng the curse, and fulfill tw team vlunteer requirements. SWAT and Exchange Managers are scheduled byapplicatin nly. Psitins are limited. The crew is typically built days in advance f the race. If yu have a vlunteer wh wuld like t be a part f the crew, please have them fill ut this applicatin. 4. TEAM CAPTAIN MEETING AND MINUTES Three weeks befre the race there will be a Team Captain Meeting. During the meeting we will discuss the rules and any cncerns/cmments the Team Captains have, as well as last minute changes. If Captains are nt able t attend the meeting, they are welcme t send anther team member in their place, and/r meeting minutes will be ed after the Team Captains Meeting has taken place, as well as be psted n the race website. 5. TEAM CHECK-IN Van 1 must check in at the start line at least ne hur befre their fficial start time. Van 2 must check in at exchange 6 at least ne hur prir t starting their legs. When checking in, each van must present the fllwing items: 1. Tw (2) flashlights r headlamps* (this means a team needs a ttal f 4 ) 2. Six (6) reflective vests* (team needs a ttal f 12) 3. Tw (2) LED tail-lights*(team needs a ttal f 4) * All payments due n race day will ccur at Exchange 6 fr the entire team. *Ultra teams need nly check in nce at the start with enugh equipment fr 1 van. *All van drivers must have a reflective vest fr night time hurs. Teams will nt be allwed t start until they shw these items. Every persn utside the supprt vehicle will be required t wear a reflective vest during the nighttime hurs. It is mandatry that yu have enugh vests fr every member f yur team. Upn check-in at the start line, Van 1 will receive runner bibs, van number, crssing flags, and a slap bracelet (used as a batn). If the team captain is in Van 2, he/she is nt required t be at the start. In this event send ne representative frm the team t check-in instead. Upn check-in at exchange 6, Van 2 will pay fr any unfulfilled vlunteer requirements and race day late runner registratin fees fr the entire team befre receiving runner bibs, van number, and crssing flags. TEAM TYPE REGULAR TEAMS 6.A) 12 Runners Regular teams are made up f twelve runners. Each member f the team will cmplete three legs f the relay. Runners must run in the same sequence fr each segment f the race every twelfth leg. Fr example, if a runner runs leg 3, he/she must als run leg 15 and leg B) Divisins There are several divisins in the Regular Team categry (Open, Sub-masters, Masters, Crprate/Public Service and High Schl) and three classificatins within each divisin (Men s, Wmen s and Mixed). T qualify fr the mixed divisin, teams must have at least 6 wmen. T be in the wmen s divisin the team must be all wmen. Team divisins and classificatins are final the Friday 1 week pst race with the final race results. 10

11 6.C) High Schl Teams T be classified as a High Schl Team, each team member must be a student, ages This is mandatry t qualify fr High Schl pricing. Any participant under the age f 18 must have a parent r legal guardian sign a waiver. Please cntact the Race Directr fr this waiver. Any vehicle with ne r mre participants under the age f 18 must als have at least 1 adult (25 r lder) wh is nt running the race and is preferably serving as a driver r safety fficer in the vehicle. Thse under 12 years f age are restricted. Ragnar will cnsider frmal requests fr extrardinary circumstances thrugh the Race Directr. 7. ULTRA TEAMS 7.A) 6 Runners Ultra teams are made up f six runners. Each member f the team will cmplete six legs f the curse. Ultra teams can chse t run ne f the fllwing tw ways 1.) run tw legs back t back three times (i.e. the first runner wuld run legs 1-2, 13-14, 25-26) OR 2.) Run 6 times, 1 leg at time (i.e. the first runner will run legs 1, 7, 13, 19, 25, 31). All runners n the team must chse the same frmat and cannt switch frmats during the race. 7.B) Divisins There are three divisins in the Ultra categry: Men s, Wmen s and Mixed. T qualify fr the mixed divisin teams must have at least 3 wmen. T be in the wmen s divisin the team must be all wmen. Team divisins and classificatins are final the Friday 1 week pst race fr final race results. 7.C) Supprt Ultra teams shuld make special preparatins t prvide supprt fr their runners. We d nt prvide fd r water except at majr exchanges (every 6th exchange) and n nn-supprt legs. Since team members f Ultra teams are running lnger legs, plan t stp frequently n supprt legs t give runners plenty f recvery fd and drinks. 7.D) All Other Rules and Lgistics Every rule that applies t 12 persn teams applies t Ultra teams. Please review all f the rules and lgistics fr 12 persn teams. 8. OTHER TEAM SIZES We d permit teams t run with any number f runners frm 3 t 12 runners. Team with any number f runners ther than 6 r 12 shuld treat the pen spts as injury runners. Teams may chse whichever spt they want as the vacant runner - but the legs must stay in the same pattern (every twelfth leg). Fr example, if spt #1 remained vacant, the legs that wuld need t be filled wuld be legs 1, 13, and 25. Thse legs can be filled with 3 different runners, r ne "super runner" can take n all three legs. Legs cannt be divided between 2 runners and will result in disqualificatin. 9. POST RACE AWARDS Awards will be given t the tp 3 finishers frm each categry within each divisin. Team divisins and classificatins are final the Friday 1 week pst race. Teams are still encuraged t check their divisin n their team prfile the Sunday befre race day t ensure they are in the crrect divisin. 11

12 GENERAL RULES SUPPORT VEHICLES 9.A) Supprt Vehicle Requirements Supprt vehicles are used t transprt the runners t and frm each exchange pint. It is suggested that Regular teams use tw vehicles t make it easier, althugh a single vehicle is allwed if there are seatbelts fr all passengers and the vehicle adheres t all applicable lcal vehicle safety laws. Similarly, Ultra teams may chse t use ne r tw team vehicles, the recmmendatin is ne van. Teams will prvide their wn vehicles. Teams are nt allwed t have mre than 2 vehicles per team. 9.B) Vehicle Restrictins 12 r 15 passenger vans are recmmended whenever pssible. Large Sedans are als great vehicles. We d nt allw any vehicle wider than 6'6" and/r lnger than 20'. Mtr-hmes, RV s, campers, trailers, buses r lims are nt allwed n the curse and/r at the exchanges by any team r spectatr at any time. Failure t meet these standards will result in remval frm the curse. Fr any questins abut the legality f a vehicle, please cntact custmerservice@ragnarrelay.cm. 9.C) Regular Van Rtatin Teams with tw vehicles f six runners shuld utilize the fllwing rtatin: Van 1 cntains runners 1-6 and Van 2 cntains runners Runner #1 frm Van 1 begins at the starting line. Once the race starts, Van 1 travels t the first exchange pint where runner #2 will prepare t run. Runners frm Van 1 cntinue t run in rder up t exchange pint 6; this is the first majr exchange in the race. At exchange 6, Van 2 shuld be waiting. At this pint, runner #6 frm Van 1 will hand the batn ff t runner #7 frm Van 2. Then, Van 2 cntinues alng the race curse rtating runners until the next majr exchange pint, exchange 12, where they will hand ff t Van 1 again. This pattern cntinues until the finish line. Van numbers will be distributed at check-in. These numbers are peel and stick numbers that must be placed n the utside rear windw f each van. D nt create a blind spt. Teams using just ne vehicle shuld pst bth van numbers in their windws s they are allwed at each exchange pint. 9.D) Ultra Van Rtatin We recmmend ne supprt vehicle fr Ultra teams. Teams utilizing tw vans must hnr the rules f rtatin fr regular teams. 9.E) Van Drivers Van drivers d nt need t be a member f the team; this can be nice fr sme teams because it allws all runners t rest between their legs. Hwever, runners are allwed t assume the duty f van drivers, in which case driving assignments wuld be rtated amngst themselves. Van drivers d nt cunt as 1 f yur 3 vlunteers. 9.F) Respect Lcal Residents & Cmmunities While traveling thrugh the lcal cmmunities, please remember we are guests and yu shuld treat all residents with curtesy and respect. Ging ut f yur way t thank lcals will g a lng way in helping the event return each year. 13 D nt impede traffic by driving t slwly r by nt prperly pulling vehicle ver t the side f the rad when stpping 9.G) Only One Race Vehicle per Exchange Due t limited parking, nly ne vehicle per team is allwed t park at each minr exchange pint. Vehicle 1 is allwed at exchange pints 1-6, vehicle 2 is allwed at exchange pints 6-12, etc. Bth vehicles are allwed at every majr exchange pint (6, 12, 18, 24 and 30). If fr sme reasn team vehicles need t meet, they must meet ff the curse r at a majr exchange. 10.H) Park Only in Designated Areas Sme exchanges have limited parking and in sme cases teams will be required t park alng rad shulders. In the event f radside parking, team vehicles are nt allwed t park n the same side f the rad 500 feet befre and after the exchange chute. After the exchange pint, vehicles can park at any legal radside that des nt impede racers r traffic. Team vehicles shuld always stay t the right f the white fg-line when parked alng the rad. 9.I) Runner Drp Off Vehicles must drp ff runners at least 500 feet prir t exchange pints befre parking. We ask that all runner drp-ffs be brief. 10.J) Restricted Areas Vans can stp t cheer n teammates at any legal spt alng the race rute that des nt bstruct runners r traffic. 10.K) Van Cmmunicatin There may be sme segments f the race where cell phne cverage will be sptty. Ask a few members f the team t bring cell phnes. Make a list f all team member phne numbers and be sure that the batteries are fully charged. Sme prviders will get better service than thers s try t have a variety f carriers. We als recmmend the use f tw-way radis. 10.L) Only 2 Race Vehicles per Team Each team is allwed n mre than tw team vehicles. Spectatrs may park at any legal spt alng the race rute r at the majr exchanges. Minr exchange parking is fr team vans and vlunteers nly, as parking will be limited. Runners may leave and return t the curse by meeting separate vehicles smewhere ff the curse r at majr exchange pints. 10.M) Van Numbers Must Be Clearly Displayed Teams must clearly display team numbers n bth vehicles. Entrance int certain exchanges is dependent n van number visibility. Van numbers will be distributed at check-in. These are peel and stick numbers that must be placed n the utside rear windw f each van. D nt create a blind spt. Teams using just ne vehicle shuld pst bth van numbers in their windws s they are allwed at each exchange pint. 10. RUNNERS 10.A) Runner Rtatin Runners must run in the same sequence fr each segment f the race. Fr example, if a runner runs leg 3, he/she must als run leg 15 and leg

14 10.B) Reflective Vests / Headlamps / LEDs Each team must have at least twelve (12) reflective vests, fur (4) headlamps r flashlights, and fur (4) LED tail/butt lights. These must be presented at time f check in (see sectin 5). 10.C) Injured Runners During Race In the event f an injury, any f the remaining runners can replace the injured runner. With the exceptin f the leg in which the runner was injured, legs cannt be split in pieces. Fr example, if runner 3 is injured half way thrugh his r her first leg, any member f the team may cmplete the leg fr him r her. Any member f the team can als fill in legs 15 and 27. Thse legs can be filled with different runners, r ne can fill in the remaining legs. A 13th member is nt allwed t jin the team in rder t run the remaining legs. Once a runner drps ut f the race, he r she cannt enter back int the race. If an IV is administered, the injured runner is n lnger eligible t run. 10.D) Mixed Divisin Injured Runners The same rules and regulatins fr Mixed Divisin apply as described in the abve sectin. If, hwever, the injured runner is female and her drpping ut causes there t be mre males than females n the team, then nly female runners may finish her legs fr her. At least 18 legs (half) f the relay must be cmpleted by female runners. 10.E) Littering & Prperty Damage Any runners wh are reprted t have damaged private r public prperty r t have littered, urinated r defecated n private r public prperty will be dismissed frm the curse and will nt be invited back. Tilets will be prvided at all exchange pints, and trash dumpsters will be available at the majr exchanges. 10.F) Fllw Race Officials Instructins Race fficials include staff and vlunteers. Curse vlunteers at exchanges are cnsidered Race Officials. They have authrity t disqualify a team fr rule vilatins, abusive behavir, r a team's failure t fllw instructins given by vlunteers. Abusive treatment r disregard fr their authrity will result in a strike r disqualificatin, depending n severity. 10.G) Fllw Crrect Rute - Navigatin is the Respnsibility f Each Team Teams are respnsible t make sure that their runners stay n the curse. Vehicles may wait fr their runners at critical pints t direct them which way t g. If a runner gets ff curse, they are t return n ft r in their supprt vehicle t the pint where they went ff curse and cntinue frm there. D nt drive ahead t make up fr the mileage that they may have added. Signage is ccasinally mved; be prudent in yur knwledge f the curse. 10.H) Visible Race Number Team race numbers must be wrn and visible n the frnt f each runner at all times while n the rad. Bib numbers must be pinned t the uter mst layer f clthing, including jackets, shrts, and reflective vests. 10.I) Use f Slap Bracelets The team s batn (slap bracelet) shuld als be wrn at all times while the current runner is n the rad. Only runners wearing a slap bracelet will be allwed t exit the exchange chute t begin a new leg. 10.J) N Pacing During Daytime Hurs 14

15 Neither ft nr bicycle pacers are allwed n the curse during daytime hurs (see sectin 12.C). RUNNER ARRIVALS AND HOLDING TEAMS HOLDING TEAMS DOCUMENT Accurate prjectins are critical t a successful Ragnar Relay. At any given spt alng the race rute we have the curse set-up and vlunteers in place fr 6-12 hurs. Based n yur prjectins, we will start yur team in a way that will keep yu within this windw. If a team runs just ne minute per mile faster than they prjected, they will be 3 hurs ahead f their prjectin by the end f the race. Fr sme teams this culd mean that they will be ahead f the set-up crew. 11.A) Penalties If yur team gets t far ahead f prjectins we may be frced t hld yur team at ne f the majr exchanges fr a cuple f hurs. If yur team is held, we will subtract the ttal time that yu were held frm yur verall time but yur team will be issued a vilatin. 11.B) Plicies and Prcedures Getting ahead f the set-up crew: We understand that it is impssible t perfectly prject yur team s pace. We give teams a buffer zne befre frcing them t stp at an exchange. If yur team des get ahead f this buffer we will hld yur team at ne f the majr exchanges. T prevent yur team frm getting ahead f the set up crew again later in the race, we will determine the amunt f time t be held by taking int accunt yur current average mile time as well as the miles left t run. Getting behind the clean-up crew: If a team gets behind the prjectin and falls behind the clean-up crew, we will usually allw the team t stay n the curse and finish the race, but we reserve the right t frce teams t leave the curse if it becmes a safety cncern. 11.C) Accurately Prjecting Times It is very imprtant t accurately prject the times when yu will arrive at majr exchange pints alng the curse. There are many ptential hazards in a race f this type including, but nt limited t: autmbile traffic, rad and trail cnditins, and weather. We ask that all teams please take apprpriate precautins t ensure a fun and safe event. Please help us keep the race safe by fcusing n being safe runners, safe supprt crews, and by helping us keep the race as a whle safe. Belw are sme basic guidelines and rules t help us all have a safe race. 12. SAFE RUNNER When yu are the n runner, abiding by the fllwing rules and guidelines will help keep yu safe. 12.A) Run Against Traffic and n Prper Surfaces Runners are t run n the left shulder f all rads (against traffic), using sidewalks r trails when available, unless signs r maps direct therwise. 12.B) Be Aware f Traffic and Obey Traffic Laws Runners are t understand that they d nt have exclusive use f the radway and are required t bey all traffic laws. This includes stpping at traffic lights. 12.C) Running & Participating at Night The fllwing nighttime rules have been develped t help ensure the safety f ALL participants. Official Nighttime Hurs can be fund n page 5. ALL runners must wear night gear during the Official Nighttime Hurs reflective vest, headlamp (r flashlight) and binking LED taillight. ALL participants must wear reflective vests during the Official Nighttime Hurs if ut f the team van anywhere n the curse, including exchanges. Pacers may be used but ONLY during nighttime hurs (see page 5). Pacers DO NOT have t be a member f the team. Running pacers can run with the runner but MUST run in single file. Bike pacers may ONLY be used n trails. Pacers MUST wear the same night safety gear as the runner (reflective vest, headlamp, and LED). If yu chse t have a van driver, wh is nt a runner, the driver must als adhere t these safety guidelines. 12.D) Persnal Music Devices and Headphnes The use f persnal music devices with headphnes while running is strngly discuraged. If yu still chse t use them, yu d s at yur wn risk and must meet the fllwing requirements: 1. Yu must be able t hear traffic 2. Be aware f the sunds arund yu 3. Be able t hear instructins frm curse fficials when speaking at a reasnable tne (nt yelling) Safe Use Tactics: When running yu shuld be able t hear yu wn ftsteps, if yu can t yur vlume is t high. Run with ne earphne ut and ne in, again yu shuld be able t hear yur wn ftsteps. Vilatins will be given ut if yu are unable t hear instructins. Three vilatins n any safety rule will result in disqualificatin fr yur entire team. 16

17 12.E) Running in the Heat Staying hydrated is critical t having a fun and successful Ragnar race, nt t mentin staying healthy and aviding a heat related illness such as dehydratin, heat exhaustin, r heat strke. Hydratin becmes especially critical during times f high heat index. The heat index (HI) is an index that cmbines air temperature and relative humidity t determine hw ht it feels. If the heat index is abve 90, heat cramps and heat exhaustin are pssible. Abve a HI f 105, heat exhaustin is likely and heat strke is prbable with cntinued activity. Teams must ensure their runners safety by mnitring the cnditin f their runners befre, during, and after each leg. Runners shuld pre-hydrate befre each f their legs, hydrate while running, and rehydrate after each f their legs. Water shuld be supplemented with electrlytes such as NUUN, SaltSticks, etc. Prper hydratin is btained when the runner has clear (light lemnade clred) and cpius urine. 13. SAFE SUPPORT When yu are part f the supprt crew, abiding by the fllwing rules and guidelines will help keep yu safe. 13.A) Safety Officer/Navigatr Each van is required t have a safety fficer/navigatr that is awake and alert at all times. The safety fficer is respnsible fr helping the team behave safely during the race. He r she must be seated in the frnt passenger seat and must have the safety guidelines and rules within reach at all times. The safety fficer respnsibilities may be rtated between team members. The safety fficer must be smene ther than the driver. 13.B) Exiting and Being Outside the Vehicle Remember that these are pen rads. Every member f the team (including drivers) must have his r her wn reflective vest. Everyne that is ut f the vehicle n the curse at night must wear a reflective vest. This includes exchanges, shulders, radways, and parking lts adjacent t the curse. Reflective vests must be wrn during the Official Nighttime Hurs (see page 5). Frm DUSK TO DAWN, KEEP YOUR VEST ON. We als encurage yu t wear bright clred clthing at all times f day and light/bright clthing at night. Dark clthing is very hard t see at night. 13.C) Rad Crssing Any team member crssing the rad must d s with an range crssing flag, day r night. This applies t the supprt crew nt the n runner. Teams will be given flags at the safety briefings (see sectin 14.F). Tw flags will be prvided at the start t Van 1 and tw flags will be prvided at exchange 6 fr Van 2. A credit card depsit f $15 is required fr each flag, but that amunt will nt be charged t the cards if they are returned at the finish. Obey all traffic/pedestrian and j-walking laws Crss at crsswalk if there is a crsswalk within sight N crssing if there is a median N crssing rads with mre than tw lanes (ne lane in each directin) Rads with a ttal 3 lanes r mre MUST be crssed at crss walks 13.D) Vans Teams vehicles are t bey all traffic laws, which include but are nt limited t: Obeying speed limits (bth minimum and maximum speed limits) 17

18 Nt stpping in the radway N illegal U-turns Pulling ff the rad cmpletely when stpping/parking N parking in nn-legal parking areas N fllwing runners t illuminate the rad fr them, r t pace them When parked, please turn ff headlights s as nt t blind ncming traffic Leave parking lights n s that the vehicle is visible t regular traffic Please d nt stp r slw dwn in places that will impede traffic r runners, and d nt turn yur hazard lights n 13.E) N Van Supprt/N Pulling Over Leg Rules If a leg alng the curse is labeled as a N Van Supprt/N Pulling Over leg, team participants need t bey the fllwing rules: Vans are NOT allwed t pull ver and supprt their runners frm ANY lcatin alng these legs. Vans are als NOT allwed t stp anywhere alng these legs and must prceed directly t the next exchange t await their runner. Special Nte: On N Van Supprt/N Pulling Over legs runners need t make sure they are well hydrated befre starting their leg and shuld carry water with them t ensure prper hydratin thrughut their run. All N Van Supprt/N Pulling Over legs ver 4 miles lng will have at least ne water statin. N Van Supprt/N Pulling Over legs ver 8 miles lng will have at least tw water statins. 13.F) Partial N Van Supprt Leg Rules If a leg is designated as Partial N Van Supprt the same N Van Supprt rules will apply nly t certain sectins f the leg. These sectins will be marked n the leg maps fund nline and within the Ragnar App. 14. SAFE RACE Help us keep the race safe by abiding by the fllwing safety rules and by helping ther teams t behave safely. 14.A) Prhibited Items n the Curse The fllwing items are nt allwed n the race curse: rllerblades, unauthrized bicycles, dgs r ther animals, baby jggers/strllers, scters, skatebards, and any ther device that may endanger thers r put a runner at an advantage ver the ther participants. 14.B) Alchl While participating in the race, the cnsumptin f alchl is nt allwed at any pint alng the curse. Alchl may be respnsibly cnsumed at the finish line. 14.C) Sleep in Designated Sleeping Areas Sleeping/resting must be dne inside the supprt vehicle r inside designated sleeping areas. Majr exchanges 12, 18, 24, and 30 will have designated sleeping areas. N ne is allwed t sleep n the grund in any parking lt 14.D) In the Event f an Emergency In the event f serius emergency call 911. We will have limited medical staff n hand. First aid persnnel will be statined at all majr exchanges. They will be equipped t handle nly minr sprts 18

19 injuries. Please be aware f this and plan ahead fr hw yu will handle any emergencies. It is the respnsibility f each team t be aware f the lcatin f hspitals and ther medical facilities. In the event f an emergency ntify the nearest race fficial, as they will be able t cmmunicate with nearest medical persnnel r call fr an ambulance if the emergency is severe enugh. If yu are nt near any race fficials, please text Race Cmmand at 661-RAGNAR1 ( ). If the emergency is severe, FIRST call 911, then ntify Race Cmmand at 661-RAGNAR1. 14.E) Mandatry Safety Training Meeting at Start Line and Majr Exchange 6 There will be a mandatry safety training at the race start line fr van 1 and at exchange 6 fr van 2 (Ultra teams need nly attend safety training at the start). Each team is required t have all team members attend the safety training. The Safety training will last apprximately minutes. Each van will pick up flags and all ther race materials after training. Alng with ther items picked up, teams will pick up van bib stickers which need t be displayed n all team vehicles. Please arrive at least 1 hur early t the start line r exchange 6 t give yurself adequate time t attend safety training. (This is cmpleted at the Pre Race Kick ff n Thursday evening as well) 14.F) Bad Weather The race will ccur rain r shine. Hwever, under certain severe weather cnditins where the safety f runners is in jepardy r where significant damage r alteratins t the race curse ccur, we reserve the right t cancel the event. There will be n refunds given if the race is canceled due t weather. Cnditins that may result in a race being canceled r delayed include but are nt limited t the fllwing: severe heat, electrical strm, snwfall, trnades, earthquakes, hurricanes, flding, fg, etc. 14.G) Heat If there is extreme heat during the race we reserve the right t hld teams until the temperature drps. In this scenari, we wuld have teams skip ahead 1 leg fr every 1 hur f Heat Hld. Race fficials at each exchange will dcument teams stp and restart times. Teams will nt be allwed t restart befre their designated restart time. If teams restart after their designated restart time, the difference will be added t their verall result times. During a Heat Hld all teams are encuraged t get ff f the curse, ut f the sun, and nt t prceed t their next exchange until 15 minutes prir t their restart time. After the race, Ragnar will apply each team s average pace t the legs that were skipped. Nte that if a Heat Hld is in place, yur team is still respnsible fr attending the start line /exchange 6 fr race check-in and the safety training befre skipping t their re-start exchange. 14.H) Lightning If there is lightning at the start f the race we reserve the right t delay starts until the lightning clears. If yu see lightning n the curse after the race has started, get yur runner ff the rad and int the supprt vehicle. Make a nte f the time and the lcatin where yu exited the curse. If lightning clears within 1 hur put yur runner back n the rad where they left and make a nte f the time. If lightning persists lnger than an hur, mve ahead t the next exchange. Fr every hur f lightning, yu may mve ahead ne exchange. Keep clse track f where and when yu left the curse and where and when yu returned t the curse. At the end f the race we will have a frm available fr yu t reprt these lcatins and times. We will then calculate yur average pace and apply this pace t the segment f the curse that yu missed. In this way we will adjust all verall race times. Only teams that have taken accurate ntes will be given fficial times. 14.I) Flding 19

20 If a runner encunters flded areas that are impssible t crss, get yur runner int the supprt vehicle, and drive the runner ahead where the rad is n lnger flded t cntinue running his r her leg. Keep track f hw far yur van drives ahead by.10 f miles and reprt the mileage and speed traveled at the finish line. We will take yur team s verall average pace, the mileage and speed driven and adjust yur team s time accrdingly. Only teams that have taken accurate ntes will be given fficial times. 14. J) Wildlife/Open Range Rules If a runner encunters any wildlife that is aggressive n the curse, get yur runner ff the rad and int yur supprt vehicle. The vehicle shuld drive ahead and let the runner ut at a safe and reasnable distance ahead f the wildlife t cntinue his r her leg. Keep track f hw far yur van drives ahead by.10 f miles and reprt the mileage and speed traveled at the finish line. We will take yur team s verall average pace, the mileage and speed driven and adjust yur team s time accrdingly. Only teams that have taken accurate ntes will be given fficial times. 14.K) Reprt Other Teams Breaking Safety Rules We will have Curse Marshals ut n the curse mnitring teams fr safety and adherence t all rules. Hwever, with the size f the curse we cannt be everywhere at nce. We are asking teams t help us keep the curse safe by reprting teams that are vilating any f the abve rules. T reprt vilatins: Send a text message t 661 RAGNAR1 ( ) Please include the Wh, What, Where, and When in yur text message. Please use this number t keep us infrmed. Send text messages if yu see imprper signage, unsafe cnditins, if yu becme lst, etc. ENFORCEMENT RULES AND SAFETY ENFORCEMENT Rules are enfrced based n a three strikes yu re ut plicy. There will be race fficials mnitring the curse t enfrce rules. Teams will be ntified via text message each time they vilate a rule (cell phne numbers will be cllected at the start line and exchange 6). If a team receives three safety vilatins a Curse Marshal will meet them t review the validity f each vilatin. If the Curse Marshal deems that the vilatins are valid, the team s slap bracelet will be cnfiscated and the team must leave the curse. In additin t Curse Marshals, teams will have the ability t text in rule vilatins. Curse Marshals will determine the validity f all text messages received frm teams. Curse Marshals may als disqualify teams n the spt withut prir warning fr what they deem t be serius rule vilatins. 20

21 RAGNAR REFLECTIVE VEST REQUIREMENTS Safety is ur number ne pririty. Ragnar Relay requires every runner t have a reflective vest prir t getting n the curse. Any participant (nt just the active runner) wh is utside f their team van during nighttime hurs must wear a reflective vest, even van drivers. In street clthes at night, yu are nly visible t drivers up t 200 feet. Mst reflective vests make it s runners becme visible t drivers up t feet. Adding headlamps and flashing LED tail-lights prvides increased visibility and safety. We receive many questins n reflective vest and what is acceptable. Reflective vests must have reflective material n the frnt, back and shulders. The pictures belw illustrate what types f reflective vests are acceptable.
