The modern tendency towards specalzaton has pervaded the lberal arts nsttutons as well as techncal schools. The tme devoted to any one subject throughout the college course at Bates has thus far been rather lmted. One course each yea s hardly a suffcent amount of study to make one real profcent n the knowledge of any one department. Vet, f a student doesn't attend graduate school he must compete wth scholars whose tranng s far more prolfc than hs own. Out of justce to students the courses should be so arranged that a four year's college tranng wll gve oppor tunrty to specalse to qute an extent n at least one department. The Honors System should help to accomplsh ths. B DEAS POLTCS For the past two weeks wo have re- ceved contrbutons to the Forum from the same author. One who executes and del vers a lfe nsurance polcy. n other words, a person whose busness t s to offer the known benefts of lfe nsurance to ndvduals, to corporatons, to partnershps, etc. But further, the lfe underwrter s one who must convnce those clents of the benefts offered. Ths means stmulatng contact wth human character, and wth large affars. Some underwrters prefer the game of character and deal manly wth ndvduals. Others prefer affars; to them s open the great feld of busness nsurance. Furthermore, the busness of lfe underwrtng pays hghly for ntatve and ablty. And stll more, the lfe underwrter offers to hs clent a commodty whch has no rsk n t, does not deterorate, and adds no burden of mental worry.
