Intrductin Intrductin Tday, as was true in 1969 when SOLVE was funded, the need exists fr Oregnians t cnnect with each ther and their cmmunities t wrk tgether twards a healthy envirnment. The Pacific Nrthwest attracts many peple because f its stunning beauty and innvative ppulace, which means mre strain n the health f ur state s natural resurces. The rle f SOLVE and key vlunteers in inspiring, engaging, and supprting vlunteers t clean up and sustain Oregn s natural areas has never been mre imprtant. There is a grwing awareness in Oregn abut the deterirating state f ur envirnment due t invasive plants, pr water quality, and everyday trash in ur urban and rural spaces. Luckily, we in the Pacific Nrthwest have a strng sense f place and pride in ur beautiful and unique states. Successful restratin f ur envirnment t a thriving and healthy ne is pssible when we wrk tgether t prevent further degradatin. Cmmunity vlunteer prjects, small and large, have the pwer t bring peple tgether t address real cmmunity needs in a tangible way. The cumulative effect f such prjects ver time is strnger cmmunities, a healthier envirnment, and a mre vibrant ecnmy. Tgether, we can make a difference ne step at a time. Abut SOLVE SOLVE brings Oregnians tgether t imprve the envirnment and build a legacy f stewardship. This missin builds n the funding visin f citizen stewardship started in 1969 by Gvernr Tm McCall. SOLVE facilitates cllabratin amng a brad spectrum f individuals, rganizatins, and cmmunities that vlunteer fr the betterment f Oregn's envirnment. By wrking tgether, we have made a psitive impact n the envirnment and tuched the lives f generatins f Oregnians. Annually, SOLVE ffers mre than 40,000 vlunteer pprtunities in 170 cmmunities acrss the state. On average, vlunteers lg 220,000 hurs f service in Oregn and Suthwest Washingtn every year. 5 Histry f the Twice-Annual Beach Cleanups The first cast-wide Oregn beach cleanup began n Octber 13, 1984 thrugh the leadership and visin f tw Oregnian wmen, Judie Hansen and Eleanr Dye. Judie was wrking as the Executive Assistant t the Directr f Oregn Fish & Wildlife. While reading an issue f Alaska s Fish & Game magazine, she landed n an article abut the untimely death f a brwn bear. An autpsy revealed that the bear s stmach held the remains f 13 Styrfam cups, likely leading the bear t assume a full stmach and starve. Judie had n idea small bits f plastic culd harm wildlife, and decided t d smething abut it. The dream f an Oregn Beach Cleanup began t take rt. Many peple stepped up t make the beach cleanup pssible, including Eleanr Dye, wh represented the Nrth Cast Refuse Haulers. She rganized haulers up and dwn the cast, wh have been dnating their services t prperly dispse f debris since That is n small service - in the first year alne, 26 tns f trash was picked up by 2,100 vlunteers. The 1984 cast-wide, vlunteer beach cleanup was the first f its kind in the wrld, and has since inspired similar cleanup mdels arund the glbe. SOLVE tk ver the cleanup effrts, adding the Spring Oregn Beach Cleanup in 1986 t address the higher accumulatin f debris n the beaches fllwing winter strms. The fall cleanup als became part f the Internatinal Castal Cleanup, cnnecting Oregnians with vlunteers acrss the natin and wrld. Over the decades, bth cleanups have grwn int an Oregn traditin, with thusands f peple wrking tgether each year t prtect the health f ur ceans, wildlife, and castal ecnmies. Over 10,000 vlunteers jin frces each fall and spring t remve an average f 100,000 punds f trash frm ur beautiful beaches. (Reprduce and use nly with prir permissin.) 2

Seeking Cmmunity Dnatins While nt required, if yu d like t add mre elements t yur cleanup that aren t cvered under the small grant, we recmmend seeking lcal in-kind dnatins frm stakehlders in yur cmmunity. These might include drinks, snacks, prizes, and/r vlunteer giveaways (e.g. reusable bags, discunts fr fd at a lcal restaurant). Ask fr Supprt Asking fr supprt can ften cause anxiety. Hwever, remember: The SOLVE cast-wide beach cleanup events have a lng histry. Many stakehlders have participated in the past and will be willing again. Other may have seen the impact lcally and want t help, but have never been asked. Yur cleanup has value. Yu are making a difference in yur cmmunity! Yur cleanup is an pprtunity fr the stakehlder. Yu are presenting the ptential dnr with a chance t get invlved in smething imprtant. (Reprduce and use nly with prir permissin.) 11

Ask fr what dnrs have in abundance. If a cash cntributin is ut f the questin, be prepared t ask fr materials that yu will need fr yur event r t recgnize vlunteers. Fr example, a bank may be able t supply reusable water bttles t give t vlunteers as recgnitin items; a lcal cffee shp may be able t prvide cffee the mrning f the cleanup; a hardware stre may have extra buckets r litter grabbers they d be willing t dnate. Here are sme valuable tips t ensure the request fr supprt ges well. Asking fr supprt in persn: Crdinate s nly ne persn frm yur cleanup leadership team cntacts each prspective partner r spnsr. Be prfessinal. Be n time, dress apprpriately, etc. Be cnfident. Yur cleanup is valuable. Keep it shrt. D nt verstay yur welcme. Demnstrate the value f the SOLVE cast-wide beach cleanup event and yur specific cleanups t the dnr. Remember that yu must articulate the value frm the perspective f the ptential partner / dnr. Present an event budget. Dnrs will want t see where their dnatin is ging, particularly if it is a financial cntributin. Shw the dnr wh else in invlved in the cmmunity. They will be mre willing t dnate if they see thers have already cntributed. Shw dnrs hw yu plan t recgnize them. Discuss and present site-specific flyers, lcal news releases, s, and ther ways t prvide publicity fr them. Nte that SOLVE can thank them n the specific site webpage, as well as the final reprt fr the event. Make sure that yu are still listing the statewide spnsrs n all utreach materials. They are all listed n the SOLVE website n the main event page. They make these events pssible each year! Yu may submit an in-kind dnatin frm t SOLVE with a receipt t make cmmunity dnatins tax-deductible. Use the In-Kind Dnatins Frm n the Zne/Beach Captain Resurces page n the SOLVE website - Be flexible and quick n yur feet. If a dnr cannt make a financial cntributin, ask fr a dnatin f what they d have in abundance. (Reprduce and use nly with prir permissin.) 12

Asking fr supprt in writing: Keep it brief and cncise. Use bld-type and bullets t separate imprtant pints frm the rest f the text. Leave plenty f white space s yur crrespndence des nt appear cluttered. Make sure mre than ne persn prfreads the crrespndence befre it is sent. Belw fr yur reference is an example f a fundraising letter r that yu might use t ask fr supprt frm a prspective dnr. Example: A Fundraising Letter t a Ptential In-Kind Dnr <<date>> <<cmpany name>> <<cmpany address>> Dear <<name f cntact>>: On <<date>>, <<grup name>> will clean up <<lcatin>>. This cleanup is a unique vlunteer cmmunity actin prject aimed at creating public awareness, instilling a lcal respnsibility ethic, and prmting cmmunity spirit. This prject prduces immediate results that will make <<cmmunity name>> prud. T successfully cmplete this event, the planning cmmittee needs <<dllar amunt r inkind requested>>. This letter is t request yur supprt. Yur help wuld be greatly appreciated by all invlved. Recgnitin wuld be prvided <<n lcal flyers, in cmmunity news releases, at the event, in the final reprt, etc.>>. I will call yu in a few days t further discuss this request. Thank yu. Sincerely, <<yur name>> <<yur address>> <<yur phne number>> <<yur address>> (Reprduce and use nly with prir permissin.) 13

Organizing Yur Cleanup The fllwing pages give a step-by-step guide t rganizing yur cleanup day. While there are many ways t rganize yur cleanup sites, there are a few basics that all Zne Captains shuld cver in rder t make yur jb easier and ensure that the event runs smthly. Mst f these tasks are als required by SOLVE and need t be cmpleted by the established deadlines. Beach Captains shuld review the Day f Event Checklist n pages with their Zne Captain, and have it n hand during the cleanup day. Use this list t help get yu started and guide yu thrugh the planning prcess. Hwever, we knw that different cities and cunties will be faced with different circumstances. Feel free t cntact the SOLVE Beach Cleanup Crdinatr at any time with zne r site-specific questins. SOLVE Event Timeline f Activities 1-3 Mnths Befre Cnfirm participatin. Recruit/train Beach Captains. Cntact lcal haulers. Update site descriptins. Inventry/rder supplies. Seek dnatins. 2-4 Weeks Befre Spread the wrd. Distribute supplies. 18 Befre the Cleanup 1-3 Mnths Befre Cnfirm yur participatin: Apprximately three mnths befre the event, SOLVE will cntact all past Zne Captains t cnfirm participatin. Please let us knw if yu will be returning s that we can send yu updates fr the upcming event as early as pssible. While we wish all f ur Zne Captains culd return year after year, we understand that life and ther bligatins ften take precedent. If yu are n lnger able t participate, please cntact us and let us knw wh will be taking ver yur rle as sn as yu can. If yu dn t have a successr, cnsider asking ne f yur Beach Captains r key vlunteers they have already received sme training, ften knw the site(s) well, and have prven their dedicatin t keeping the cast clean! Once the new Zne Captain is identified, make sure t cnnect them with SOLVE and lcal haulers, hand them any leftver supplies, tur them thrugh the cleanup sites, and discuss any vital infrmatin they may need. Recruit and Train Beach Captains: Each cleanup site must have ne r mre Beach Captains (Zne Captains ften captain individual sites as well). The Beach Captain is the persn in charge f each site, setting up registratin, hanging signs, greeting vlunteers, giving the safety and educatin talk, distributing cleanup supplies, and making sure everyne has a safe and fun cleanup day! They can als help yu prepare fr the event by seeking lcal dnatins, spreading the wrd, and scuting the site befre vlunteers arrive fr any hazardus r large debris items. The Day f Event Beach Captain Checklist is n pages 23-25, and can be dwnladed ff the Zne/Beach Captain Resurces webpage. Zne Captains, please print ff the checklist and review it with each f yur Beach Captains befre the event. The number f Beach Captains that need t be recruited varies with each zne. Znes with five r mre cleanup sites (Zne 1, Znes 7-9) will require many mre Beach Captains than znes with nly ne site (Zne 12). SOLVE recmmends assigning mre than ne Beach Captain t each site. Fr cleanup sites that typically hst a large number f vlunteers (e.g. Seaside, Cannn Beach, etc.), having mre than ne captain is essential t break up tasks. Fr example, ne captain is in charge f registratin and waivers, the secnd is in charge f the safety and educatin talk, and the third is tasked with taking phts, and helping vlunteers as they clean the beach. (Reprduce and use nly with prir permissin.) 15

Befre determining hw many Beach Captains t recruit, Zne Captains shuld first cntact veteran Beach Captains that led sites in previus years t see if they are interested in returning. Beach Captains are ften recruited frm lcal and reginal: Service grups, Lins r Rtary Clubs, State Park camp hsts, Cmmunity businesses, Churches, Universities, Surfrider chapters, and Past beach cleanup vlunteers. If yu need help recruiting, please cntact SOLVE. We can help spread the wrd, and send any interested vlunteers yur way. We receive dzens f inquiries abut becming a Beach Captain it helps us t knw which sites are in need f a captain. Cntact lcal haulers: Due t the scpe f the cast-wide beach cleanup event, SOLVE is nt in direct cntact with every lcal hauler, r Public Wrks Department regarding dispsal and hauling lgistics. It is the Zne Captain s respnsibility t ensure that each cleanup site is prepared fr the prper dispsal f debris picked up by vlunteers n the day f the event. Make sure t cntact yur lcal trash haulers as sn as pssible t give them ample time t arrange dnatins and pickup. Many f ur haulers have been dnating their services t the events since 1984! That is n small service, as they help dispse f and recycle ver 100,000 punds f debris each year. Setting up dispsal with yur lcal hauler may be as simple as calling and telling them the upcming event date. Hwever, in many cases, ther lgistics are als necessary. T make sure yu are cvered, cnsider the fllwing steps: Cntact yur lcal hauler, let them knw yu are a SOLVE Zne Captain, and cnfirm yur sites. Give them the date f the upcming event. Cntact the cunty t discuss a dispsal fee waiver. Crdinate with the lcal Public Wrk s Department. Wrk with lcal State Parks. Let us knw if fr any reasn a lcal hauler can t cver the full cst. T make their dnatin tax-deductible, please ask fr a receipt after the event and send a cpy t SOLVE. (Reprduce and use nly with prir permissin.) 16

If it makes sense at yur site, cnsider recycling t divert waste frm the landfill. Cntact yur lcal hauler abut the best way t srt recyclables fr pickup. Suggest t vlunteers that they head ut in pairs with ne persn carrying a recyclables bag and ne carrying a landfill bag. Fr tips, read the Recycling & Sustainability sectin - pages Update site descriptins n the website: Vlunteers register fr the beach cleanups in ne f tw ways. They can either pre-register thrugh the SOLVE website in advance, r they can sign up the day f the event with the Beach Captain at the check-in site. Regardless f which way they chse, they typically decide t register at a specific lcatin based n the site descriptin n the website. They als learn where t meet, directins, and what t bring. (If there is a small enugh grup f vlunteers: Why dn t we g arund the circle and have everyne intrduce themselves). Fr thse wh have never heard f SOLVE, it is a state-wide, nn-prfit rganizatin, that engages vlunteers t take care f the envirnment. SOLVE has several prgrams, frm cleanups t educatin prgrams, t prvide cmmunity members with vlunteer pprtunities t preserve Oregn. One f thse prgrams is the cast-wide beach cleanup, which has been taking place twice each year since On average 10,000 vlunteers remve ver 100,000 punds f debris each year frm the entire Oregn Cast. These SOLVE cleanups are led by partner rganizatins, such as <<my partner rg>>. Site Infrmatin: Cleanup site name Hw lng <<partner rg>> has been wrking here Issues n this site/imprtance f this site (ex: lts f micrplastic debris) Prject bjectives f the site/benefits f wrking here Spnsrs/Partners: SOLVE Other funders and partners Tday s Activity: Tday we ll be cleaning up the beach. (If there is a small enugh grup f vlunteers: What are sme ways yu think ur activities tday will help this area?) <<Insert key educatinal messages here>> <<Insert dispsal infrmatin and hw t fill ut data cards>> Safety Tips: While we wrk tday, please keep safety in mind. Be aware f yur surrundings and dn t stand n any lgs r slippery rcks. Watch ut fr sneaker waves, and never turn yur back n the cean! If yu find hazardus material, very large debris items, r ptential tsunami debris, dn t tuch it r try t mve it mark the lcatin and alert yur Beach Captain. Wear yur glves at all times. If yu cme acrss an animal, dead r alive, steer clear and alert yur Beach Captain. Please keep yur dgs n a leash fr the cmfrt f ther vlunteers. Questins: Are there any questins? Nw yu re ready t begin! (Reprduce and use nly with prir permissin.) 35

Fr litter and marine debris cleanups, SOLVE has created educatinal bards yu can use the event. Yu can rder the bard when yu fill ut yur supply rder frm. The educatin bard shuld be placed in a lcatin where vlunteers can view the infrmatin befre, during, and after the event. Make sure t let vlunteers knw abut the educatinal bard during the intrductry talk. Anther gd time t suggest vlunteers take a lk at the educatinal bard is while they are waiting fr the event t begin. Once vlunteers start wrking, yu and yur Beach Captains can take the pprtunity t educate vlunteers as they wrk. As a vlunteer leader, it easy t get caught up in cmpleting the wrk rather than relating t vlunteers. D nt d this; be strategic. Use this pprtunity t further educate as many vlunteers as pssible n the imprtance and lng-term impact f what they are ding. Tie their participatin at the event t the achievement f the prject visin. Answer any questins they may have. Key Educatinal Messages Here are sme key messages SOLVE has created t educate vlunteers abut the impact and imprtance f their wrk. Please refer t the event-specific messages n the SOLVE website fr mre detail. These are typically available 2 mnths befre the event. Seabirds and marine life can eat/becme entangled in plastics and ther materials. Wildlife can starve t death by mistaking plastic fr fd. Litter is unsightly, lwers prperty values, and impacts castal ecnmies. Plastic trash absrbs and can release txic chemicals. Trash travels n the wind and waterways and thrugh strm drains t the cean. EXAMPLE: Key Message: Litter and Trash Remval Picking up trash in yur neighbrhd r alng yur lcal waterway is an easy and effective path t stewardship! Trash n the land will blw t the nearby creek, flw t the river and ultimately end up in the cean -- we are all in a watershed. At any pint, wildlife r fish can becme entangled in, r eat the trash, s cleanups prtect the envirnment and ur native animals! One example: Pre-prductin plastic pellets, called nurdles, lk very similar t fish eggs, and are readily eaten by marine life. Cleanups can als set gd examples and prvide educatin t prevent further pllutin. Cnsider utilizing reusable water bttles, grcery bags, and take ut cntainers. Bring a litter bag with yu each time yu g ut t the beach. Every little actin helps keep ur beaches free frm debris! (Reprduce and use nly with prir permissin.) 36

Media & Outreach Press Releases & Scial Media SOLVE is respnsible fr sending ut statewide press releases, media alerts, radi spts, and brchures leading up t the cast-wide beach cleanup events. Hwever, we rely n yu, the Zne and Beach Captains, t help spread the wrd in yur lcal cmmunities. As much as we try, we aren t able t cnnect with every lcal paper, and cmmunity grup! SOLVE prvides all the tls yu need t help us spread the wrd abut the event. In additin t cleanup supplies, we als prvide yu with statewide event brchures/psters, a site specific editable flyer, individual webpages fr each f yur cleanup sites, press release templates, talking pints, and scial media psting text. All these items will either be delivered n the supply drp rad trip r are available n the Zne/Beach Captain Resurces Page n the website. SOLVE Lg Guidelines. Please remember t d the fllwing n all prmtinal materials yu make yurself: Use the SOLVE event name (ex: SOLVE Spring Oregn Beach Cleanup) and lg. Include the names and / r lgs f all event spnsrs, dnrs, and lcal partners. all prmtinal materials t the SOLVE Beach Cleanup Crdinatr fr review befre yu pst them. The Imprtance f Media Cverage fr Yur Prject Media cverage can help yu t share the stry f yur cleanup with a larger audience, recruit Beach Captains, recruit vlunteer supprt beynd yur cre leadership team, and advertise yur event t ptential cmmunity partners, including in-kind dnrs. There are many ways in which yu can engage media partners. Be sure t create a frmal rle fr media partners. This gives them a greater stake in making yur prject successful. Sme ways that a media partner can supprt yu and yur prject include: Airing public service annuncements abut yur prject. Sending a media persnality t yur event r pre-event activities. Featuring yur prject and/r event in their radi, TV, r nline cntent. Prviding awards t, r prfiles f, vlunteers as part f their cntent. (Reprduce and use nly with prir permissin.) 37

There are a variety f types f news utlets in yur cmmunities that may be willing t prvide news and calendar cverage fr yur prject. Be strategic remember that each type f news utlet has its wn strengths and weaknesses when it cmes t getting yur cntent t the right audience in a quick and cst-effective manner. Types f Cmmunity News Outlets Available t Cver Yur Prject / Event Cmmunity Newspapers / Weeklies Internet / Scial Media Sites Radi Televisin Magazines These include: Cmmunity newspapers Weekly and semi-weekly papers Neighbrhd newsletters, etc Cmmunity newspapers are an imprtant surce where peple receive infrmatin abut their neighbrhds and lcal cmmunity. There are several avenues fr advertising events nline: Newspaper websites Many newspaper websites als have webpages where yu can pst yur event infrmatin. Vlunteer websites These are websites dedicated t psting vlunteer events (ex. Hands On Vlunteer Match). Facebk and Twitter These scial media sites are particularly useful in recruiting vlunteers fr yur prject / event frm family and friends. Radi statins prvide air-time fr call-in, news, and talk shws. Statins are als required t prvide a certain number f Public Service Annuncements (PSAs). Since televisin is a visual medium, prjects and events which can successfully present a visual cmpnent will have the best success getting air-time. Public affairs prgrams, talk shws, editrials, Public Service Annuncements (PSAs), and feature segments f the news are all ptential publicity pprtunities fr yur events, particularly with lcal access cable statins. There are a number f lcal and reginal magazines. Nte, hwever, that mst magazines require a lengthy lead-time fr submissin and printing f yur prject / event infrmatin. (Reprduce and use nly with prir permissin.) 38

What the Media Wants Frm Yu The better able yu are t articulate hw relevant and interesting yur cleanup is t the lcal cmmunity, the mre useful yur cntent will be t a news utlet. As yu prepare cntent n yur prject r event fr the media, ask yurself the fllwing questins: Relevance Des yur cleanup present a stry that is f particular relevance in the cntext f current events, lcal r natinal? (Ex: Recent media hype regarding cean plastics after 5 Gyres Study was published in 2014.) Human Interest Des yur cleanup cnnect t a larger issue r news event being discussed in yur cmmunity? (Ex: The fall event is a part f the Internatinal Castal Cleanup, cnnecting Oregn t a glbal cmmunity.) Uniqueness Hw is yur cleanup different and surprising? (Ex: D yu have a schl cming ut t turn the debris picked up int art? Are yu ffering free chwder t vlunteers?) Prminence Wh is invlved in yur cleanup? (Ex: The invlvement f lcal public fficials, businesses, r grups turning the debris int art will add media value, as will the number f cmmunity members and lcal rganizatins invlved.) Cmmunity Impact What is the impact f yur cleanup in terms f the number f peple invlved and the tangible result realized? (Ex: The event has been taking place since On average each year, 5,000 vlunteers clear ver 50,000 lbs f debris frm the Oregn Cast in a single day!) Envirnmental Impact Hw will yur cleanup benefit the envirnment? (Ex: Benefits t lcal wildlife. Keeping debris ut f the cean.) Talking Pints Befre, during, and after event day, yu will need t have a pitch ready fr the media, which includes a cuple f the key educatinal messages listed earlier in this guide. Yu may be interviewed by the media at any time, withut warning. Be ready. Keep yur talking t a maximum f 30-secnds. Befre yu speak with the media, be sure t practice yur talking pints with a partner and then try them ut n a few ptential vlunteers and in-kind dnrs. This will help yu t refine yur message and deliver it in a clear, cncise, and cnfident way. Als, remember t train yur Beach Captains and ther key vlunteers n hw t give the same 30-secnd speech effectively. Please refer t the Zne/Beach Captain Resurces page n the website fr eventspecific messages and talking pints. These are typically available tw mnths befre the event. (Reprduce and use nly with prir permissin.) 39

The News Release Fr statewide events, SOLVE always sends ut news releases. SOLVE encurages yu t send ut yur wn as well t lcal media. Media utlets expect t receive news releases that are frmatted in a standard way. Refer t the Zne/Beach Captain Resurces page n the website fr an event-specific news release template. Please send any news releases t the SOLVE Beach Cleanup Crdinatr fr review befre yu send them ut! (Reprduce and use nly with prir permissin.) 40

Recycling Tips & Sustainability Recycling at the Cast-Wide Beach Cleanups Adding recycling t yur beach cleanup sites will take an additinal effrt n yur part and n the part f yur lcal hauler, s it is between yu tw t decide whether yu re up fr it and whether it makes sense in yur area. SOLVE is keenly aware and thankful that yu and lcal haulers dnate yur services t this event, s while we are happy t supprt yur effrts t recycle, we recgnize the chice is abslutely yurs! The gal f recycling nsite is t help reduce the amunt f debris sent t a landfill bth frm vlunteer waste generated at the event (ex: water bttles), and frm recyclable litter n the beach. Recyclable litter may be limited. Haulers ften can t accept items that are t sandy r dirty, r that aren t identifiable (withut the #1-7 plastic type). The fllwing tips were gleaned frm the rganizers f the Nehalem Bay Cleanup wh have been recycling fr ver a decade. Different haulers n the cast have different recycling capacities, cnfer with yur Lcal Hauler abut what they can and can t accept. Ask if they have pictures and a list f recyclable items that yu can laminate and pst nsite fr vlunteers. Depending n the number f vlunteers expected at yur site, recruit Recycling Beach Captains t versee the bins, and srting prcess as vlunteers return frm the beach. OSU Master Recyclers are a great vlunteer pl and lcal resurce! Setup: Prvide a recycling statin fr yur Recycling Beach Captains, a table preferably with sme cver frm the rain t pur ut bag cntents and srt thrugh recyclables. Prvide sturdy glves fr srters - dishwashing glves wrk well. A rinsing statin fr sandy litter is ambitius, but has been dne at the Nehalem Bay Cleanup. On Cleanup Day ask interested vlunteers t either designate a partner r grup member t hld the recycling bag, r give tw bags t a vlunteer s they can begin srting recyclables as they cmb the beach. Have Recycling Beach Captains direct incming vlunteers t the recycling statin and dumpster. Cmpile trash bags s they re tw-thirds full fr the dumpster (keep track f the number f bags r dumpster level!). Pur ut recyclables n the table t srt, and make sure t keep track f the number f bags r size/type f recycling bins fr the cleanup reprt. (Reprduce and use nly with prir permissin.) 41

The phts abve are gd examples f ways sme sites have incrprated recycling and reuse int their cleanups. The pht n the left is frm the Cannn Beach Cleanup. The Oregn Beverage Recycling Cperative (OBRC) sets up at the registratin site, next t the dumpster. Vlunteers are asked t separate plastic bttles frm the rest f the debris, and helpers frm OBRC are n hand t help separate and clean the bttles. The middle pht is frm the Nehalem Bay Cleanup. CARTM Recycling has been dnating their services t this cleanup fr many years. They help separate the debris that vlunteers bring back, and srt it int reusable items, recyclable materials, and trash t be sent t the landfill. A mre detailed CARTM recycling prcedure (with tips) can be fund n the Zne/Beach Captain Resurce page n the website. The right pht is frm the Bandn Beach Cleanup. Instead f recycling the debris, much f it is given t the Washed Ashre Prject, a lcal nn-prfit dedicated t educating and creating awareness abut marine debris and plastic pllutin thrugh art. They srt thrugh the debris picked up by vlunteers, bring items back t their prcessing facility, wash the debris, and eventually use it t create art sculptures which have tured arund the cuntry. Many years, the Washed Ashre Prject sends vlunteers up and dwn the cast t cllect debris frm a dzen cleanup sites. SOLVE will cntact yu befre the cleanup if they plan t stp by. Similar ideas include cnnecting with a lcal schl r art club t create educatinal art frm the debris, cllecting micrplastics and cigarette butts in jars t use as educatinal tls at the future cleanup events, r creating a debris art challenge amng vlunteers. Feel free t be creative when it cmes t recycling! (Reprduce and use nly with prir permissin.) 42

Incrprating Sustainability int yur Cleanup SOLVE is always lking fr ways t make the cast-wide cleanups mre sustainable. On the main event pages n the SOLVE website, as well as the individual site pages, we encurage vlunteers t cnsider sustainability befre they cme ut with the fllwing list: Bring a bucket r reusable bag t reduce the amunt f plastic trash bags used Bring an ld clander t sift the tide lines fr harmful, bite-sized bits f plastic Bring a pair f gardening glves t reduce use f plastic glves Bring a reusable water bttle and/r cffee mug Carpl and use public transprtatin where pssible Plan ahead and pack a trash-free lunch Send SOLVE yur stries f effrts t achieve a persnal zer waste t landfill day! Because SOLVE crdinates clse t 50 cleanup sites n a single day, we als rely n lcal Zne and Beach Captains t help us within their wn cmmunities. Many Zne Captains have had success asking lcal businesses fr in-kind dnatins fr items such as buckets and wrk glves. Items such as these can als be purchased thrugh the small $100 grant and can be used year after year. If yu btain buckets, let SOLVE knw - we have SOLVE stickers fr these! (Reprduce and use nly with prir permissin.) 43
