4 Team Member Recruitment Here are a few tips and tricks that will assist yu as yur wrk t build yur team! 1. Start early. Begin recruiting as sn as yu ve registered yur team nline. The earlier yu get yur team members invlved, the sner yu can begin planning yur team s fundraising activities and building excitement. Send ut s with the link t yur team website s individuals can register fr yur team. Share yur team fundraising gal with the peple yu are trying t recruit. 2. Get the wrd ut. Let yur family, friends, c-wrkers, teammates, classmates, and/r neighbrs knw yu are lking fr team members. If they are nt interested, they may knw smene wh may lve t participate. 3. Pst n Facebk. 12 Special Olympics Clrad Missin The missin f Special Olympics Clrad (SOCO) is t prvide year-rund sprts training and athletic cmpetitin in a variety f Olympic-type sprts fr children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them cntinuing pprtunities t develp physical fitness, demnstrate curage, experience jy and participate in a sharing f gifts, skills and friendships with their families, ther Special Olympics athletes and the cmmunity. Histry and Organizatinal Structure What started as a day camp in Eunice Kennedy Shriver s backyard in the late 60s has grwn t becme the largest prgram f its kind. The Jseph P. Kennedy Fundatin incrprated Special Olympics in In February 1988, the Internatinal Olympic Cmmittee (IOC), the umbrella rganizatin f the Olympic mvement, fficially recgnized Special Olympics. Tday this internatinal prgram serves ver 3.7 millin athletes in ver 200 cuntries. Every ther year, Special Olympics brings the wrld tgether t cmpete in internatinal-level games. Special Olympics Clrad, authrized and accredited by Special Olympics Inc., held its first event at Aurra Hinkley High Schl in Fur hundred athletes participated in a ne-day track and field meet. SOCO currently serves ver 24,000 athletes acrss the state and ffers 22 sprts. Clrad is rganized int five gegraphic areas that are each served by a SOCO Area Manager. A lcal prgram, under the leadership f a vlunteer prgram crdinatr and key vlunteers, directly serves athletes. Funding Special Olympics Clrad is a registered 501(c)3 nn-prfit rganizatin supprted entirely by private dnatins frm individuals, crpratins and rganizatins thrughut the state. The prgram des nt receive any financial assistance frm the gvernment, United Way r Kennedy Fundatin. Athlete Participatin All athletes are required t btain medical clearance in rder t participate in Special Olympics Clrad. Athletes develp fitness and sprts skills, as well as learn rules and strategies frm their vlunteer caches. Special Olympics als trains vlunteers and certifies caches, fficials and games cmmittee members t ensure that all athletes receive the highest quality training and cmpetitin. At cmpetitins, athletes are placed int divisins based n age, gender and ability. Cmpetitins take place at area, state, natinal and internatinal levels. Special Olympics Unified Sprts The Special Olympics Unified Sprts prgram cmbines an equal number f Special Olympics athletes with their nn-disabled peers (partners) n sprts teams helping t break dwn barriers that have histrically kept peple with and withut intellectual disabilities apart. SOCO s prgram includes Unified Sprts event pprtunities in 18 sprts. There are ver 1,000 partners registered in the prgram. Because f the prgram, Special Olympics Clrad is truly a sprts prgram fr individuals f all abilities. Vlunteers Each year SOCO relies n a vlunteer frce f ver 13,000 peple. Vlunteers serve at all levels in the prgram and in many capacities, including caches, sprts fficials and cmmittee members. SOCO can match the interest r need f individuals, grups and crpratins within the vlunteer pprtunities fr all area and state cmpetitins and special events. Cmpetitin Special Olympics Clrad is divided int five areas with ne state ffice and three satellite ffices. SOCO ffers a year-rund prgram, hsting ver 100 cmpetitins annually at area and state levels.
