3 1.0 INTRODUCTION The Fresh Ideas Pster Cntest is a natinal pster cmpetitin rganized by the American Water and Wastewater Assciatin (AWWA). The Fresh Ideas Pster Cntest is designed t encurage Yung Prfessinals (YP) and students t participate at cnferences held by individual AWWA sectins as well as the annual AWWA cnference. The cntest prvides participants an excellent pprtunity t shwcase and share their insight and experience and t exchange ideas with a wide range f water prfessinals. Each AWWA sectin hlds its wn cmpetitin at its sectin cnference t determine the winner. All sectin winners are then eligible t mve n t cmpete at the AWWA Annual Cnference and Exp (ACE). The 2019 Western Canada Sectin winner fr the pster cmpetitin will be determined at the 2018 Western Canada Water Annual Cnference held in Winnipeg, MB. The first step in participating in the cntest is t submit an abstract regarding a pster tpic (see submissin guidelines in Sectin 2.0 belw). Presenters will then be chsen frm submitted abstracts t participate in the pster cmpetitin at the WCW cnference. At the cnference, presenters must arrange t set up the pster n Wednesday, September 19, 2018 in a designated prminent, high traffic area in the cnference hall. A panel f experts will judge the psters n Thursday, September 20, 2018 frm 8:00 am t 9:30 am. Presenters will be required t stay in attendance frm 9:30 am t 11:30 am t discuss their psters with cnference delegates. The cntest winner will be awarded at the WFP Breakfast n Friday, September 21, ABSTRACT SUBMISSION Please submit yur abstracts fr the pster cntest t the cntact listed in Sectin 6.0 by Thursday, May 31, Include the primary authr s name, c-authrs if any, cmpany r schl, and cntact infrmatin. The abstract shuld cnsist f the title f the presentatin and a descriptin f the pster in less than 250 wrds. The abstract shuld summarize a water industry related tpic and clearly define the bjectives f the prject, methds used, results and cnclusins drawn. The abstract shuld highlight the prject s imprtance t the water industry. Presenters will be chsen frm submitted abstracts t participate in the pster cmpetitin. 2.1 ELIGIBILITY All pst-secndary students are welcme t participate. The Fresh Ideas presentatin will cver diverse water tpics related t understanding and managing water in all its stages. Tpics may include Drinking Water Treatment and Distributin Systems, Water Quality and Standards, Water Reuse, Water Resurces, Strmwater, Asset Management, Cnservatin, and Wastewater Cllectin and Treatment. Research and/r prjects may have multiple cntributrs; hwever the Fresh Ideas presentatin entries must be n an individual basis. Page 3

4 3.0 POSTER PREPARATION A pster presentatin is a bulletin bard rganized s research data, plans r case studies stand fr themselves. It is a technical paper displayed graphically, giving the reader research bjectives, experimental methds, materials, results and cnclusins. It is highly encuraged t use graphics (i.e. graphs, phtgraphs, charts) t cnvey infrmatin. The presenter will prvide further discussin while presenting the pster t the judges. Psters ptimize ne-t-ne cmmunicatin and prvide the pprtunity fr discussing tpics f mutual interest. Phts f sample psters are fund in Appendix A. 3.1 TECHNICAL DETAILS Title Banner A title banner must be 1.2 m lng and high enugh t cntain the title f the pster, authr(s) and emplyer(s) r schl(s). Pster bards are apprximately 1.2 m by 2.4 m. Pster Units Each piece f paper, graph, phtgraph etc. On the pster bard is defined as a pster unit. Text must be legible frm a distance f 1.8 m. The fllwing rules gvern design f Pster Units: Size the minimum size unit shuld be 8½ x 11 in. Larger sizes may be used, but cnsistency is encuraged. Fnt Size Lettering shuld be a minimum f 0.4 in tall. D nt use cursive fnt. Line Weight Graphics and figures shuld be drawn with a minimum width f 1 mm Use phts that are 4 x 6 in. r larger 3.2 POSTER CONTENT T aid the reader, a clearly and cncisely stated bjective sectin is necessary. This can be fllwed by an experimental sectin. The results shuld be the majr prtin f the pster with the cnclusins, stated briefly, fllwing the results. 3.3 ORGANIZATION A pster shuld be able t extract the essence f yur wrk by viewing the pster during the perid when it is unattended. This gal may be achieved by the use f ne r mre f the fllwing: Organize the pster units in an rderly fashin fr a lgical flw tp t bttm r left t right. Number the units in the rder yu want them viewed r use cnnecting lines t guide the reader. Page 4

5 Blck and subtitle the parts f yur pster as yu wuld a paper. Lay ut yur pster befre cming t the cnference and have it critiqued by a clleague. Have handuts, supplementary texts, r abstracts available. 4.0 JUDGING As previusly stated in Sectin 0, the Fresh Ideas Pster Cntest will be n Thursday, September 20, Judging will ccur n Thursday, September 20, 2018 frm 8:00 am t 9:30 am. Presenters will be required t stay in attendance frm 9:30 am t 11:30 am t discuss their psters with cnference delegates. Psters will be judged by members f the Western Canada Sectin and special guests (such as an AWWA Vice President). Judging f each pster will be based n the fllwing pint system: 10 pints fr the applicatin f sund engineering and/r scientific principles, where applicable, t ensure the best slutin 10 pints awards fr pster tpics that prvide the mst benefit t the water/wastewater industry 10 pints awarded fr the ral presentatin f pster and answers t questins. Each presenter will be allcated 10 minutes t present their pster t the judges. 10 pints awards t the quality f the pster (rganizatin, adherence t pster requirements, clear and cncise technical cntent) Winners will be annunced at the WFP Breakfast n Friday, September 21, In the event f a tie fr the pster cntest winner, the WSC AWWA yung prfessinal chair will select an additinal judge t serve as the tie breaker. 5.0 PRIZE 5.1 FIRST PLACE The first place winner will be given a ne year membership t AWWA and cmplementary registratin t ACE The winner will have their travel, accmmdatin, registratin, and a per diem meal stipend paid fr by Western Canada Sectin AWWA and AWWA, up t a maximum f $2,000. 6 5.2 OTHER CONTESTANTS The remaining cntestants will be given a ne year membership t AWWA. 5.3 ACE 2019 PRIZE The winner f the Fresh Ideas Pster Cmpetitin Winner at ACE 2019 will win a $500 cash prize and will have the pprtunity t write an article fr the AWWA Jurnal. 5.4 PRESENTER BENEFITS All presenters will be given a 1 day free registratin fr Thursday at the Cnference. This includes the ability t attend technical sessins in the afternn.
