Mid-Season Sports Report December Having initially been credited by SportScotland with a Gold School Sport Award in 2016, we were successful in our validation of this award and will carry this prestigious status for another 3 years. This is based on the quality of our School Sport and Physical Education programmes in the school which continue to give opportunities for pupils to participate and achieve in PE and Sport. Pupils have already competed and participated in various competitions and clubs this session within Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Dance, Football, Gymnastics, Hockey, Netball, Rowing, Skiing and Volleyball. Here s how the season s are going so far... Page 1

Archery Five pupils from Gryffe recently competed in the Renfrewshire Archery Championships at St. Andrews Academy. With the options of beginner or club level, all five challenged themselves and chose club, shooting at smaller targets. Well done to Craig Brennan, Daniel Evans, Matthew Simpson, Luke Cree and Cobi Sturgeoner for representing the school. Special congratulations to Craig and Daniel for making it an all-gryffe final, with Daniel Evans earning gold in an impressive fashion. Athletics Gryffe athletes continue to experience success at county level through competing in Renfrewshire Schools Athletics Championships whilst also experiencing performing on the national stage in Scottish Schools Athletics Association events. At the Renfrewshire Schools Road Race in November, both individual medals and team trophies were won at On-X, Linwood as 40 Gryffe pupils competed: Ryan Knights (S1 Boys) 3 rd Place Ellie Nayar (S1 Girls) 2 nd Place Sarah Lyle (S1 Girls) - COUNTY CHAMPION!!! Kassie Gribben (S2 Girls) 3 rd Place Evie Livingstone (S2 Girls) - COUNTY CHAMPION!!! S2 Boys TEAM - 3 rd Place S1 Girls TEAM - COUNTY CHAMPIONS!!! S2 Girls TEAM - COUNTY CHAMPIONS!!! The athletes now look forward to more championships in 2018 including: Renfrewshire Schools Cross-Country Championships and Track & Field Championships Scottish Schools Athletics Association Indoor Track & Field Championships, Cross-Country Championships, Road Relay Championships, Pentathlon Championships and Track & Field Championships S1-S3 School Athletics Championships Page 2

Badminton S5/6 Joel Bain, Cameron Hunter, Nairn McKeon, Stuart Berry, Finlay Dickson, Will Hobbs, Alisha Sivell, Emily Svensson, Ruth Stewart, Carly Richardson, Chloe Duncan and Rachel Thomson represented Gryffe at the S5/6 Renfrewshire Schools Badminton Championships this year. All pupils put on a fantastic display and competed very well throughout the event. After competing in a round robin tournament against pupils from all other Renfrewshire schools, there were three Gryffe pupils who made it into the knock-out stages. Within the boys tournament, Joel Bain managed a 4 th place finish, while Stuart Berry finished in 3 rd place. Although the boys could not claim a 1 st place finish, there was to be better fortune for one of our Gryffe girls. Rachel Thomson went through the entire tournament UNBEATEN and rightfully earned a 1 st place finish at this year s championships. Well done Rachel! S3/4 Jennifer Boyd, Michaela Craven, Calum Geddes, Alice Gibb, Gavin Finnie, Simran Kaur, Jamie Love, Beth Moglia, Seamus Mowberry, Niall Robinson and Morven Sanderson represented Gryffe at the S3/4 Renfrewshire Schools Badminton Championships this year. All pupils put in a brilliant effort during the group stages of the event and encountered some challenging opponents from various schools. Four Gryffe boys made it through to the knock out stages with Seamus Mowberry eventually progressing to the final with Beth Moglia also making the girls final. Having been a beaten finalist last year, Seamus worked hard to go one better this year to be crowned county champion while Beth had to settle for the runners-up place following her excellent achievement in reaching the final. Page 3

S1/2 Badminton Mirin Shearer, Sarah Lyle, Caitlin MacKenzie, Samantha Loughlin, Isla Minucci, Erin Lundie, Dylan Galloway, Andrew Bogan, Rory McAllister, Alistair Baxter, Llwelyn Devoy and Robbie Watson represented Gryffe at the S1/2 Renfrewshire Schools Badminton Championships this year. All pupils put in a fantastic performance against some very challenging opponents from other schools and thoroughly enjoyed competing. After competing in the group stages of the competition there were 6 Gryffe pupils who progressed into the knock out stages. Robbie Watson, Llwelyn Devoy, Samantha Loughlin, Isla Minucci, Caitlin MacKenzie and Mirin Shearer fought their way into the quarter finals of the tournament after several outstanding performances. Unfortunately this proved to be the final hurdle for 4 of our Gryffe pupils as only Samantha Loughlin and Caitlin MacKenzie made it through to the semi- finals. The two S1 girls battled very well in their semi-final matches and were extremely unlucky not to make it through to the final of the tournament. After coming up against two very experienced club Badminton players in their semi-final matches, the girls were narrowly beaten at this stage. Well done girls! Basketball Open Boys The Open Boys Basketball team have made an excellent start to the season. The Senior Boys main competition so far this season has been in the Scottish Cup. The group stage started with a home game against Park Mains HS. The match was evenly contested throughout however by the end of the third quarter Park Mains had a strong lead. However, during the final quarter Gryffe demonstrated great belief and teamwork to bring the game level in the dying seconds forcing the game into overtime. Unfortunately, Park Mains won the game after overtime which meant a losing start to the group stage. The Open Boys were able to put this defeat behind them and win their next two group games. An win against a young Gleniffer team set up a decisive home game against St Aloysius with the winner progressing to the last 16. Gryffe came out triumphant beating St Aloysius meaning the boys will now travel through to Edinburgh to play George Heriot s in the next round of the Scottish Cup. Page 4

Under 15 Boys The Under 15 Boys have had a difficult start to the season so far. After being drawn into a tough group in the Scottish Cup the boys have shown a gradual improvement as the games have went on. The boys started the group with a home tie against an experienced Stewarton Academy squad losing The next two Scottish cup games were away to Park Mains HS and Kyle Academy. Unfortunately they lost both games despite two improved performances losing against Park Mains, a game where Joe Reade score 31 out of the 41 Gryffe points, and a defeat to Kyle Academy. Under 15 Girls The Under 15 Girls started off their Scottish cup campaign with a solid victory against Auchinleck Academy in Ayrshire. The squad have a number of players who play outside of school which has showed in their development and progress. A loss in an encounter against St Maurice's HS and then another strong victory against Hillhead has saw the girls progress into the next round of the Scottish Cup. Their next fixture will take them to the capital to face Portobello High School. S1 Boys The S1 Boys team have been working hard during Wednesday lunch times to develop their ability in Basketball. This season they have only played one Scottish Cup game in their group so far. The S1 team travelled to Glasgow and played against a very talented St Andrews HS team. Gryffe lost their first game in the competition but the boys are looking forward to their next two group games against St Ninian s HS and St Aloysius College due to be played before the Christmas break. S1 Girls The S1 Girls started with an excellent team performance against St Andrews High School, Glasgow. The girls worked hard as a team and supported each other. A narrow loss did not dampen their sprits in what was a competitive game showing a lot of future potential. Page 5

S1/S2 Development Squads Twenty S1 / S2 girls recently took part in the S1/2 Girls Basketball Development day at Lagoon Leisure Centre. The girls played games against other schools from Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire with a view to developing their skills and enjoying the sport of basketball. These sessions are set up as an introduction to playing basketball but also helps create a pathway for girls to progress from school sport to club sport if they wish to. On the day, the games were officiated by our local basketball club - basketballpaisley, with Gryffe's very own Brad Low and Oliver Campbell officiating on the day. Another day is planned in February for the girls to attend again. Good job girls! Dance The dancers at Gryffe have been working extremely hard at our new dance club. So far the dancers have looked at the theme of bullying through contemporary dance and have recently started to look at hip-hop dance in preparation for the upcoming competition next year. We also had some dancers who choreographed their own routines for the MADD Show and did a fantastic job! Finally, well done to Emily Fallon who was dance captain of the month in November and Erica Chalmers who is dance captain of the month for December. Keep up the good work Gryffe Dancers! Football Gryffe continues to feature prominently in various competitions this season, hoping to experience more success in both Paisley & District league and cup competitions and Scottish Shield competitions with all boys teams entered into all of these competitions. Senior Football It has been a positive start by the senior football this season with the S6 pupils adding strength and depth to an already promising squad. The highlight of the season thus far has been earning a place in the round 4 of the Scottish Shield. This came as a result of winning a dramatic penalty shootout against Lenzie Academy and earning a 4-2 win against a strong Trinity HS side in round 3. The League campaign began brightly with a convincing win over Linwood HS. This form has continued with the boys remaining unbeaten going into their final league against Paisley Grammar. With the current performances and points, qualification from the group stages looks very promising. Page 6

Furthermore the players will need to show great resilience to bounce back from their early exit in the St Mirren cup where last year s winners, St Ninian s won deservedly. Finally, congratulations to Alex Quinn who sits as top scorer with 5 competitive goals. Under 16 Boys The Under 16 team has had a disappointing season so far, mainly through a significant number of players either carrying a long term injury, or though being injured. We got knocked out the Scottish Cup by an impressive Holyrood Secondary side, however we are still in the St Mirren Cup and are due to play in the first week back after the Christmas Holidays. In the league we have struggled to meet all our fixtures, however in our last game before the Christmas break we had a resounding 3-1 victory over Park Mains HS. We hope to pick up in a positive fashion in the New Year and are aiming for a good run in the St Mirren Cup our sights are set on picking up that trophy again! Under 15 Boys The 2018/19 seasons started with the new management team of Mr Anderson and Matthew McCaw taking the reins of the Under 15 football team. Our first fixture of the season was drawn against Gleniffer, our fierce rivals, at home. The sense of anticipation throughout the team was palpable at the prospect of the clash with the players eager to earn a first team place for the contest. The game was fast paced from the outset and a number of early challenges set the tone for what was to become a tightly contested first half. However, Gryffe s determination to gain a foothold on the game eventually paid off and we went into the break two goals ahead. The second half saw a Gleniffer revival as they struck back with a goal of their own. Luckily, it only provided a wakeup call to Gryffe who started to control possession and open up chances in the Gleniffer defence. A flurry of late goals saw the final score become 4-1 to Gryffe. A great start to our season. The Scottish Shield draw saw our team matched in the second round with Rothesay Academy away. This involved a long journey to the island including a ferry journey across the Clyde. Confidence was high going into the tie, although limited information about the opposition made Mr Anderson and Matthew nervous of what to expect as we arrived. The game started with caution being shown by both sides. Long balls seemed to be the tactic of the away side with Willbond and Wilmington proving vital in defence at clearing a barrage of Rothesay Academy chances. The game was decided by a solitary goal, a half volley that soared into the net by Durrant. Man of the Match for the game was Carslaw who was solid in a right back position, pushing forward at every opportunity and tracking each run back. Under 14 Boys The Under 14 Boys have made a very good start to the Paisley and District League this year with 2 wins and one defeat so far. The squad has been very much made up from players who represented the school at Under 13 last year, with a couple of additions made after this year s trials. Page 7

The team made the perfect start to their league campaign with a 4-1 victory away to St Ninian s HS. This was an excellent result for the team which set them up well for the remaining fixtures. Despite a positive start to the league campaign, the team would find themselves drawn away to Cathkin High School in the second round of the Scottish Shield. After making the long journey to Cambuslang, the team battled well in a hard fought game but were narrowly beaten 3-1. Back to league business and the team bounced back in style with a victory over Linwood HS in their second match, our highest scoring match to date. This was an ideal situation to further enhance the team s confidence as the next match against Castlehead HS would prove to be a tough one! The third league match ended with a heavy defeat to Castlehead. With only 10 players available for this game it was always going to be extremely difficult to get anything from the match. At present the team have still to play St Andrews Academy in their final league match. A win in this game will hopefully guarantee progression into the Champions League stages. Additionally, the team are into the second round of the St Mirren Cup and will face the winners of either St Ninian s or St Andrews. Under 13 Boys Our Under 13 Boys had a debut to remember in secondary schools football with a comprehensive victory away to St Andrew s Academy B. Following this, the boys travelled to Cathkin High School in round 1 of the Scottish Shield. Going into the game with confidence high, the boys found themselves up against a high quality team and ended up on the losing side to go out of the Shield in the 1 st round. With league business to focus on, our boys hosted Renfrew HS and Gleniffer HS in a busy week for the team. Unfortunately, the boys were not able to overcome the strengths shown by both teams but did show excellent work ethic in continuing to develop as players throughout these defeats. These results will likely mean the boys progress into the Europa League format after Christmas and will look forward to this along with a St Mirren Cup round 1 tie at Clydeview Academy. Girls Football The S1/S2 Girls football has gone from strength to strength this term with a strong showing in each of their two Active School League days as well as friendly games against other local schools. There are 15 girls who regularly attend training each Monday after school with commitment shown each week to attend and also with improvement in performance shown within games. The white team recently lost their unbeaten start to the season with a narrow defeat to a very good Park Mains HS side and the blue team also continued winning their fair share of games! Our new S1 s have acquitted themselves very well and should be proud of their Page 8

efforts so far. Recently the girls were offered the opportunity to join local club Houston Utd where they would get the chance to play more regularly in the game and begin to be involved in club sport. We are looking ahead and already incorporating some P7 s from Bridge of Weir and Houston Primary Schools at our training sessions. It is hoped next term they will be part of our Gryffe team. Also thank you to S5 pupil Katie Irvine for volunteering to assist at our training sessions and also our games. She has been a great help and should be proud of her contribution so far. Well done girls keep up the good work! Representative Football Squads Frazer McFadzean and Harry McInnes were selected to represent Paisley & District Schools Football Association in the prestigious Scottish Schools Under 15 National Trophy this season. Both players enjoyed a high volume of game time throughout the group stages, however were unable to help the team qualify for the knock out stages having won 1 and lost 2 of their fixtures. Fraser Lee, Alexander McCaw and Adam Telford were selected to represent P&DSFA in the Seniors National Trophy as well this season. Having recorded one win, one draw and one defeat, the team narrowly missed out on qualification for the knock-out stages. The boys did however all put in some strong individual performances with all three having been discussed by Scottish Schools Football Association selectors for the national team. Alexander and Adam have since been invited to trial for the national team across the month of December. Lily Caldwell has also been selected to represent West Region Under 15 squad this season. Lily made her debut in November s Scottish Schools competition with further fixtures to be played in December. Page 9

Gymnastics Gryffe Gymnastics club has had continued success throughout their lunchtime and after school sessions, with pupils performing a variety of basic to complex skills. Pupils continue to demonstrate enthusiasm, trust and leadership when working with others, with pupils supporting one another. In addition, pupils have also transferred and developed other skills from similar activities such as parkour and trampolining to develop their knowledge and understanding of gymnastics. The gymnastics club is open to all pupils and year groups, with training taking place on a Tuesdays and Thursdays at lunchtime and on Wednesdays from 3pm-4pm. Hockey Gryffe have continued to compete in the Renfrewshire Hockey League this term, fielding two teams at senior level. With only one round of fixtures being played, Gryffe 1 & 2 are sitting mid-table with some games in hand compared to league leaders Renfrew. In addition, the team have recently enjoyed training sessions delivered from the president of the local Anchor Hockey Club. Final congratulations to the pupils selected to represent the Local Authority in the Aspire Cup; well done Jack Nelson, Calum Jamieson, Fergus Noble and Scott Peters! Page 10

Netball It has been a busy first half of the season for our netballers, with 4 teams competing in the first round of the Scottish Cup and 8 teams across S1-6 competing within the Renfrewshire Cup. All Scottish teams have now completed their gruelling first round match schedule, with some teams even having to play twice a week! The girls will now progress to the knockout round of the competition in the following sections: S1 Silver (Home to Mary Erskine School ) S2 Silver (Home to James Gillespie High School ) S3 Silver (Away to Earlston High School ) Open Silver (Home to Berwickshire) In the Renfrewshire Cup, teams experienced mixed success. Our S2 and Open teams will progress to the Cup section of the competition with our open team impressively winning the initial tournament stage. Our S1 and S3 teams are yet to compete and are eager to test their skills on court against the best in Renfrewshire following the Christmas Break. Netball training is open to all year groups and levels of experience, with our S1/2 players training on a Monday after school and our S3-6 players attending on a Tuesday evening. If you are interested in developing your skills or simply trying a new sport, see Miss Holmes or Miss Still for more info! Skiing/Boarding Alasdair Campbell and Ella Brawley represented the school in Scottish Schools Snowsport Association Skiing and Boarding Championships. Both pupils competed well against the best skiers from across the country and will look forward to similar events in future seasons. Volleyball Following initial experience of the Renfrewshire Active Schools competition late in the season, our seniors have started the season with three league days against the best teams from across Renfrewshire schools. The team had an outstanding first league day winning 5 out of 7 fixtures to go into league day 2 in 2 nd place. A less successful league day 2 saw the team overtaken to sit in the middle of the league standings. Page 11
