TAKE ME HOME TONIGHT: The Padres will conclude their 10-day, nine-game, three-city road trip this afternoon as they will play the third and fi nal game of this three-game series with the Diamondbacks in Phoenix...these two clubs will play the rubber match of this three-game set today, with the Padres taking game one by a score of 6-5 and the Diamondbacks taking game two yesterday by a score of following today s contest, the Padres will return home for their fi nal homestand of the season, a 10-game stay in San Diego, that will bring in the Philadelphia Phillies to town for four games (Sep 15-18), San Francisco Giants for three games (Sep 19-21) and Colorado Rockies for three games (Sep 22-24). The Friars are coming off a three-game series in Los Angeles where the lost two of three games to the Dodgers. The Padres opened up the current roadtrip with a three-game series in Denver (Sep 5-7) where they were on the wrong side of a series sweep as they were shutout twice in three days in the Mile High City. Before embarking on the current roadtrip, the Friars had an 11-day, 10-game homestand, going 6-4 on the stand and taking two of three games from both the Milwaukee Brewers (Aug 25-27) and Dodgers (August 29-31) while splitting a four game series against the Diamondbacks (Sep 1-4). Following the 10-game homestand, the Padres will conclude their 2014 schedule with a four-game trip to San Francisco (Sep 25-28). UNFORTUNATELY...: With last night s loss against the Diamondbacks and a Dodgers win over the Giants, the Padres were officially eliminated from National League West division race. WITH A WIN TODAY: With a win this afternoon against the Diamondbacks, the Padres would secure their first series victory of the season against the Snakes this season and their first since winning three of four games against Arizona at Petco Park from September of last season...the last time the Padres won a series against the Diamondbacks in downtown Phoenix was July of last season when they took two of three games from the D-Backs. A win today would improve the Padres to in 17 series since the second half of the season began on July 18. FOR IT S ONE, TWO, THREE STRIKES: Through 147 games this season, the Padres pitching staff has recorded 1,172 strikeouts, already surpassing their 2013 total of 1,172 and the sixth-highest total in franchise history...the franchise record for strikeouts in a single season is 1,295, done by the 2010 squad...entering play today, the 2014 Padres are on pace to record 1,292 strikeouts this season, which would be the second-most in franchise history. As a team, the Padres boast a 8.07 strikeouts per nine innings, the best mark in franchise history...prior to this season, the best mark in franchise history was 8.00 in Tyson Ross (195) and Ian Kennedy (184) are both on pace to reach the 200 strikeout plateau this season... only three players (five instances) in franchise history have ever reached the 200 strikeout mark: Kevin Brown in 1998 (257), Jake Peavy in 2007, 2005 and 2006 (240, 216 and 215, respectively) and Clay Kirby in 1971 (231). Since the 2000 season, only four sets of National League West teammates have accumulated 200+ strikeouts in a single season: SF Tim Lincecum (231) and Jonathan Sanchez (205) in 2010, ARI Randy Johnson (260) and Curt Schilling (316) in 2002, Johnson (372) and Schilling (293) again in 2001 and LAD Chan Ho Park (217) and Kevin Brown (216) in RENE AT THE PLATE: Since the second half of the season began on July 18, Rene Rivera is hitting.274/.356/.437 (32-for-117) with four doubles, a triple, four home runs, 14 RBI, 16 walks and 16 runs scored...among National League catchers with at least 100 at-bats in that time, Rivera ranks fourth in the National League in batting average and onbase percentage an seventh in slugging percentage. KEEP YOUR ENEMIES CLOSE: The Padres own a (.596) this season in one-run games, the best record in Major League Baseball...dating back to their walk-off, one-run victory over Milwaukee on August 27, the Padres are 5-1 in their last six games decided by one run. To put the Friars success into historical perspective, their.596 winning percentage in one-run ballgames is the sixth-best in franchise history, trailing only the 1974 season (31-16,.666), 1991 season (27-16,.628), 2004 season (25-15,.625), 1989 season (30-18,.625) and 2001 season (24-15,.615). SO YOU RE TELLING ME THERE S A CHANCE?: The Padres boast a 51-1 (.981) record this season when leading after six innings, the best mark in Major League Baseball...when leading after seven innings, the Friars are 52-2 (.963), the best record in the National League and second-best in the Majors, trailing only Kansas City (66-1,.985)... when leading after eight innings, San Diego is 54-1 (.982), the second-best mark in the National League and thirdbest in the Majors, behind only Kansas CIty (72-1,.986) and Atlanta Braves (68-1,.986).
