LET S PLAY TWO: Today will mark the second time this season (also April 9 at Cleveland) and the eighth time since the 2000 season that the Padres will participate in a double-header (six on the road, two at home). The Padres have split each of their last fi ve double-headers dating back to the 2005 season...the last time the Padres won both games of a split bill was May 19, 2004 at Pittsburgh. The last time the Padres played two double-headers in the same season was during the 1999 campaign: July 3 at Colorado (lost both) and September 29 at St. Louis (lost both). The Padres all-time record GAME 1 ON FOX SPORTS 1: The first game of today s double-header at 9:35 PT can be viewed on Fox Sports 1 while game two can be viewed on FOX Sports San Diego at 3:10 PT. In the San Diego area, FOX Sports 1 can be found on the following channels: AT&T U-Verse 1652, Cox 1067, DIRECTV 219, Dish 150 and Time Warner 793. SEEING RED: Today will be the second and third games of a three-game set for the Padres with the Cincinnati Reds and the second and third of six games this season. Since the start of the 2013 season, the Padres pitching staff has limited Cincinnati to 2.7 runs per game and pitched to a 1.92 ERA (14 ER, 65.2 IP) with a.207 opponents average in those seven contests. A WIN TODAY OR TONIGHT: With a win in either of the two games today, the Padres would clinch their first series victory of the season away from Petco Park, having gone in five series on the road to this point. A win in the day game would also extend the Padres season-best winning streak to fi ve games, the club s longest winning streak for the Friars since winning seven consecutive games from June of last year. A win at any point today would give the Padres their second series win over the Reds in their last three meetings, as the Friars took a three-game set at Petco Park from July of last season...prior to that series victory, the Padres had lost their previous four series against the Reds dating back to April 11-13, A series victory today would also be the fi rst for the Padres in Cincinnati since April 23-25, STARTING MAY: The Padres starting pitching staff is off to a hot start in May, having pitched to a Major League best 2.28 ERA (17 ER, 67.0 IP), having allowed three earned runs or less in all 11 games, two or less nine times and one or less six times...padres starters boast eight quality starts this month despite a 3-3 record. Over the last nine games since May 4, the Padres rotation has pitched to a Major League best 1.93 ERA (12 ER, 56.0 IP) and posted a 8.52 strikeouts per nine innings, the second-best mark in the NL (Atlanta, 10.11). As a team, the Padres have pitched to a Major League best 2.46 ERA (29 ER, IP) in the month of May. CHASE-ING HEAT: Chase Headley hit a two-out, game-winning, solo home run in the top of the ninth inning off of Aroldis Chapman Wednesday night to give the Padres the lead this was the second time this season that Headley has given his team the lead with a home run in the ninth inning or later (also on April 22 at MIL in the 12th inning), tied for the Major League lead in this category (also Giancarlo Stanton). The home run was the eighth go-ahead home run of his career in the 7th inning or later and his second against a left-handed pitcher (as a right-handed hitter), the other being on August 10, 2012 at Pittsburgh (Tony Watson). His home run last night came on a 99.4 mph fastball from Aroldis Chapman which is the hardest thrown pitch during the 2014 season hit for a home run...additionally, since data started being tracked in 2008, the 99.4 mph fastball is the hardest thrown pitch ever hit for a home run by a Padres player, a touch higher than the 98.1 mph fastball hit by Chris Denorfi a off of Chapman on July 29, (per BaseballSavant.com). TWO STRIKES? NO PROBLEM: A pair of Padres are among the Major League leaders at the plate this season when down to two strikes in the count Seth Smith ranks second in the Big Leagues with a.346 (18-for-52) mark while Chris Denorfia ranks third with a.339 average (21-for-62) (min 50 AB). Smith and Denorfi a have an overwhelming lead in this category in the National League, as the average in third place (Andrew McCutchen) is hitting.300 (24-for-80). To put these numbers into perspective, Major League average with two strikes is.175. THE MAGIC NUMBER IS...: The Padres own a 13-1 record this season when scoring four or more runs...the Friars.929 winning percentage in these decisions is the third-best in Major League Baseball, behind only Milwaukee (21-1,.955) and Washington (17-1,.944). SWEET SWINGIN SETH: Seth Smith is starting to heat up at the plate, as he now owns a.381/.459/.619 (32-for-84) line with 11 doubles, three triples, a home run, 11 RBI and 13 walks over his last 24 games since April 11...his batting average in that time ranks second in the Majors to COL Troy Tulowitzki (.386) while his OBP also ranks second and slugging ranks fourth. In 10 games so far this month, owns a.475/.533/.900 (19-for-40) line, the best average in baseball, while his slugging percentage also ranks first and his OBP ranks third. Has hit safely in nine straight games, tied for the longest hitting streak of his career (3x last on June 4-12, 2011). Dating back to his second at-bat on May 3 vs. Arizona, has recorded 19 hits in his last 35 at-bats (.543) with eight doubles, three triples and a home run. CARDIAC KIDS: Through 40 games this season, the Padres have played in 27 contests decided by two runs or less (15-12), the most such games by a Major League team this season...the Padres have also played 15 games decided by one run, the seventh-most in the Majors. The Friars have played to this mark despite playing one of the most diffi cult schedules to open up the season, having played 33 of their 40 games this season against teams with a.500 record or better (16-17), the highest total in all of Major League Baseball...to take this a step further, the Padres have played a Major- League-leading 12 games against teams with a.550 winning percentage or higher (6-6) (tied with Los Angeles and Pittsburgh).
