Oct No.7 Tommy Dorsey Band To Play At Homecomng Crtcsm Brngs Kss Restrcton, Dean Declares In response to crtcsms from vstors leavng the Unversty Unon, the resdents of Alce Prout Hall have been asked to stop kssng ther dates at the man door of the resdence hall. The request was a jont acton on the part of Mrs. Florence Carrer, dean of women, and Mrs. Loma Urschel, Trout's head resdent. Mrs. Currer stated n an ntervew that each year there are a number of crtcsms drected towards some of the dsplays of affecton that occur on the steps of the women's resdence halls when the women r: e returnng from dates. These crtcsms come partcularly from townspeople and are drected prncpally to the large resdence halls such as Prout or Founders. "Usually the resdents themselves, through corrdor meetngs, etc., decde what wll be accepted as good taste when a man and woman return to the hall," Dean Currer sad "but as the house hoard at Prout was not n operaton and as there were several examples of extremely bad taste n dsplays of affecton, the rulng came from Mrs. Urschel and myself." The reasons for the rulng were explaned to the resdents by Mrs. Urschel at meetngs, Mrs. Currer added, and practcally all of them saw the need for t. She emphaszed the fact that the rulng s nothng completely new. "Every year," she sad, "such a stuaton arses and t draws crtcsm not only from outsders, but from other students and even resdents of the hall tself." Taylor Jr., dean of men, has announced. Telb was found gulty of a delberate attempt to deceve the Student Court at the Court's sesson a week ago today. After recevng the Court's sentence, he was sent to Dean Taylor for further dscplnary acton. Nytray had aded Telb by regsterng Telb's car n hs own name after Telb had had hs car and drvng prvleges suspended by the Court last year for a perod of a year. Ths was Telb's thrd attempt to drve whle under court suspenson. "Ths was a drastc acton," Denn Taylor sad, "but the serousness of the stuaton warranted t." Telb was gulty of volatng tho Student Court's rulng a number of tmes, and Nytray was subject to dsmssal because of the falsfcaton n hs car regstraton, just as any other student s subject f found to have gven false nformaton In regsterng hs car. In 1934, wth brother Jmmy he formed a band. By 11K16, after separatng wth Jmmy Dorsey, hs band was on ts way up. Tommy Dorsey was the frst bandleader n the country to use tho trombone as a solo nstrument. Two of the most famous Dorsey recordngs, "Mare" und "Song of Inda," started records back on tho road to bg-tme busness, settng trends n popular arrangements that lasted to ths day. The present ht record of the Orchestra s the popular platter, "Tea for Two Cha-Cha." No story of the Tommy Dorsey musc would bo complete wthout a menton of the muscuns and vocalsts who got ther start wth the orchestra. Such names appear as Glenn Mller, Ray McKnley, Bob Crosby, Buddy Rch and Gene Krupa. Among the vocalsts who served ther apprentceshps wth Tommy are such greats as Frank Snatra, Dck Haymcs, Jo Stafford and the Ped Ppers. Wth the death of Dorsey, Warren Covngton, a brllant trombonst, was the outstandng choce to head the great Tommy Dorsey Orchestra. Covngton was establshed as one of New York's most respected, and hghest pad muscans playng for such names as Jacke Gleason, Ed Sullvan, Perry Como, Robert Q. Lews and Arthur Godfrey. Add Warren Covngton's talent, combned wth the musc of the "Sentmental Gentleman" plus the sprt of Homecomng ought to make ths a great evenng somethng to remember. Ths play centers around the problems of good manners n preteenagers. It tres to help parents understand the bafflng and nconsstent behavor that often characterzes chldren of ths age. "Scattered Showers" s concerned wth three mothers and how ther pre-school youngsters act n a crss when each chld has been reared accordng to a dfferent method of dscplne. 3 Edtorally Speakng Democracy Reversed In a democracy, the majorty of the people decde whch poltcal party shall have control of the government The majorty of the people also decde what rules shall govern the entre naton when t casts ts votes n electons for ether the rules themselves or for the men who wll establsh the rules. Ths s one of the basc prncples upon whch the democ- ratc form of government s based. It s the word "majorty" whch s mportant. Not "all of the people," but "the majorty" makes the decsons whch affect the welfare and lves of a democracy's ctzens, and people not counted n "the majorty" must abde by them. Usually t s not too panful for those not belongng to "the majorty" to exst under these rules and men chosen by t. But f the stuaton s reversed and f a form of punshment s nvolved, then a great many people are hurt because of the deas of actons of only a few or "the mnorty." Numbers of people are punshed when t s only the gulty few who actually deserve harsh treatment. Unfortunately, these stua- tons occur n a democracy also. Such an unfar stuaton exsts now at the Alce Prout Resdence Hall, where resdents have been asked not to allow men to kss them at the man door. Because a few resdents were not wse enough to see that ther dsplays of affecton were not n good taste, none of the women lvng there are now permtted to gve an nnocent, smple, good-nght kss to ther dates. Some of the persons whch the restrcton affects a few of the nnocent resdents, probably all of the ones gulty of the dstaseful exhbtons, and probably all men who date women lvng n the resdence hall contend that the cause for the ban les wth the persons who made the complants to Dean Currer and Mrs. Urschel, the head resdent. It could easly be sad that they were all "busybodes and old mads," yet they should know that ths s not sound thnkng. The bad taste of only a few resdents was responsble for the ban, and the sooner that these gulty persons realze ths, then the sooner the restrcton wll be eased or suspended. 11 n.m. 12 II a.m.12 1:00-3:00 1:10- S:00 7:00-11:00 1:00 10:10 IIOO-IIIOO 1:W- 4:15 3:10- S»0 4:10-1:00 4:10-1:00 3:00-7:00 3:00-7:10 6:00-10:00 t;00-7ll0 llls- 7:00 1: :10- ( 10 1:10-1:00 7:00-1:30 7:00-1:00 7:00 10:00 7:00 10:00 1:00-5:00 1:10-5:00 lt- 7:30 1:10-7:10 4:J0 7:30 7:00-1:10 7:30 «:J0 7:10- lm 7:1010:00 1:00 10:30 111! 1:00 4:30 4:10-3:00 3:00 1:00 1:30 1:00-1:00 7:00-1:00 7:00- loo 3:00 1:00 p.m 7:00-10:00 1:00 11:00 1: :00 7:30-1:10 7:30-1:13 Calendar Of Events noon noon w n. Our school has, n the past months, been strvng for an ncrease n hgh scholastc standng and ntatve among ts students. The two hundred dollar award stands as one reward for achevng ths hgh standng. Ths last year, three students became elgble for ths honor by recevng perfect grades. As t was stated n the paper, Shu Sum Cheuk was not the recpent of anythng but an honorable menton because he "carred a lghter load." Ths "lghter load" conssted merely of chemstry, algebra, German and bology the subjects requred for a pre-medcal student. 1 am not concerned wth the rght of the other students to receve the award, but only wth the terrble wrong commtted when an award equal to thers was not awarded to Shu Sum. After the hours of constant study n the classroom, laboratory and lbrary, and the rght earned for an award such as ths, what a dscouragng, cruel, and unfar awurd s an honorable menton. What sort of ntatve for hgh scholarshp s ths, when a student who has made a 4.0 average s not able to feel anythng but dscouragement, and whose entre year of dlgent effort s termed as a lght load? The queston also could be rased as to why there s only one $200 award for hgh scholarshp. Does ths mean that only one student out of the hundreds that enter s expected to be elgble? I know that I am not the only person who shares the above opnons, and I am sure that f everyone put hmself n Shu Sum's place and thought of the work, made harder because of the language barrer, that had gone nto the preparaton and completon to the maxmum of all hs requrements, he would readly see how unjust the presentaton of the awards has been. Nancy Fell To The) : In leu of what happened at the October 7 semnar for students and faculty, wth Mr. Scares gvng a very nformatve, stmulatng and challengng speech to only a handful of curous busness students and a few faculty members, I would lke to pose some questons to the persons concerned. Why are persons majorng n the areas that wll be dscussed durng the course of the speech not requred to attend? Why, when such an opportunty arses, does the student prefer to sweat and stran to acqure nformaton from usually out-of-date r TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY Features 7:28. 9:30 books, nstead of lstenng to men who present up-to-date nformaton, and are experts n ther feld, and who are, for the most part, dynamc and-nvgoratng personaltes? I beleve that COBUS s the best thng to arse out of these vy hulls for some tme. It wll contnue because t s nterestng t gves the student an nsght nto hs nstructors' personal phlosophes n many areas, and because of the atmosphere n whch the program s conducted one of frendly and warm relutons between student and faculty. It s succeedng beyond expectatons. The student who s able to attend these dynamc meetngs, und chooses not to, s mssng the boat completely. Von get up n the ordnary way and do tll the ordnary tlngs you ordnarly do. You have your breakfast, you walk your ocelot, you go to classes, you wrte home for money, you burn the dean n effgy, you watch Dsneyland, and you go to led. And do you gve one lttle thought to the fact that October 12 s Columbus Day? No, you do not. Nobody thnks about Columbus, these days. Let us, therefore, musr for a moment and retell hs ever-glorous, endlessly strrng saga. c * a Phs Of S on a- Chrstopher Columbus was burn n fenoa on August 25,1451. Hs father, Ralph T. Columbus, was n the thrcc-mnute auto wash game. Hs mother, Eleanor (Swfty) Columbus, was a sprnter. Chrstopher was an only chld, except for hs four brothers and eght ssters. Wth hs father busy all day at the auto wash and hs mother constantly away at track meets, young Columbus wan left pretty much to hs own devces. However, the lad dd not sulk or brood. He was an avd reader and spent all hs wakng hours mmersed n a book. Unfortunately, there was only one book n t le ma at the tme Cere of the Hone by Arstotle and after several years of readng Csr» o/ lae Worse, Columbus grew restless. So when rumor reached hm that there was another book n Barcelona, off he ran as fast as hs fat lttle legs would carry hm. The rumor, alas, proved false. The only book n Barcelona was Cudar un Cabatlo by Arstotle, whch proved to be nothng more than a Spansh tmn.-'lnton of Curt of the Horn. Btterly dsapponted, Columbus began to dream of gong to Inda where, accordng to legend, there were thousands of books. But the only way to go to Inda was on horseback, and after so many years of readng < 'an of tn nfsrsr, Columbus never wanted to clap eyes on a horse agan. Then a new thought struck hm: perhaps t was possble to get to Inda by sea! Fred wth hs revolutonary new dea, Columbus raced to the court of Ferdnand and Lsabella on hs lttle fat legs (Columbus was plagued wth lttle fat legs all hs lfe) and pleaded hs case wth such fervor that the rulers were persuaded. On October 12, 1492, Columbus set foot on the New World. The followng year he returned to Span wth a cargo of wonders never before seen n Europe spces and metals and plants and flowers and most wondrous of all tobacco! Oh, wlat a sensaton tobacco caused n Europe! The flter had long snce been nvented (by Arstotle, curously enough) but nobody knew what to do wth t. Now Columbus, the Great Dscoverer, made stll another great dscovery: he took a lter, put tobacco n front of t, and nvented the world's frst flter cgarette! Through the centures flters have been steadly mproved and so has tobacco, untl today we have acheved the ultmate n the flter cgarette Marlloro, of course I Oh, what a pece of Work s Marlboro! Great tobacco, great flter, groat smoke! And so, good frends, when next you enjoy a fne Marlboro Cgarette, gve a thought to the plucky Genoese, Chrstopher Columbus, whose vson and perseverance made the whole lovely thng possble. He ganed a grand total of 38 yards rush- IM).'. beng unable to crack through or around the Falcon defenses from scrmmage. The scorng started early n the game as Ramlow scampered 35 yards off tackle and through the Western Mchgan secondary for the frst tally. Josh Ruga of Central State was the low man n the meet as he turned n a tme of 20:34 for the four mle course. The next fve fnshers n the race, however, were Falcon harrers. Dave Armstrong led the pack wth 20:51, followed by Larry Dove, 21:05; Mel Turner, 21:0U; and John Scott and Hob Mcars who ted wth 21:22. The last four places n the top ten were flled by Central's runners, who all turned n good tmes. Howard Love, 21:35; Emery Ells, 21:64, Nate Foster, 22:12; and Jm Burnett, 22:13, all turned n tmes that would have prevously bettered the Falcons. Frosh Grdders Tred By Toledo The Bowlng Green freshman football team kcked off the season wth a te aganst the Toledo Unversty yearlngs last week. The Falcons were ahead twce n the contest, but couldn't hold the advantage as TU scored n the second and fourth perods to te. The Bobcats were aded n both touchdown drves by penaltes aganst the Falcons. For the nght, BG's frosh had 105 yards n penaltes stepped off aganst them. In the frst TU drve, BG had two ffteen yarders nsde ther own forty yard lne, and n the last drve, a ffteen yarder placed tho ball on BG's two. The Falcons were a hot and cold crew, as t appeared they were gong to ce the game on several dfferent occasons. The undermanned Rockets held on wth all they had to fght off each drve. Roger Thompson, fullback for KG, pcked up 31 of the needed 39 yards n the touchdown drve. Howlng Green's frst perod TD was scored by Ruas Hepner on a sx yard run. Thompson's kck was no good to leave the score 6-0 for the Falcons. After TU went ahead, 7-6, Joe Nussbaum took a TU punt on hs own 49, and behnd precson blockng went 61 yards for the score. Ths tme Thompson's kck was perfect for a 13-7 lead whch lasted tll the fnal perod. After TU ted the count at the Falcons made one last move. They battered down to the TU 25, and on a fourth down stuaton tred a pass whch a recever had hs hands on near the end xonc, but couldn't fnd the handle, and the drve ended. The task put before them STOP COLEMAN. As the fnal score ndcated, the local grdders were successful. Coleman who had been averagng nne yards pev carry and was leadng the naton n small college rushng, was held to only 38 yards n 13 carres. Coleman's one stellar performance came wth the Falcons leadng, 12-0, durng the second quarter. Chuck Comer sent the bull flyng deep nto the Western Mchgan end xone on a kckoff, nto Coleman's watng arms. The speedy fullback tucked the bull under hs arm and scampered along the sdelne 103 yards for Western's only score of the game. The game was a bad one all around for the sensatonal groundganer. On one of the many Falcon kckoffs Coleman yelled at one of hs teammates who wus recevng the ball. The Bronco turned to see what Coleman was sayng and dropped t. On another play Coleman was a vctm of crcumstance and was thrown for a 17 yard loss. Coach Doyt Perry sad after the game that the teum played ther best ball so far ths season.
