The celebraton, Oktoberfest, s comng to Bowlng Green on Frday, Oct. 23 and wll nclude all of the above except the beer drnkng. Oktoberfest wll take place n the St. Thomas More Audtorum on Thurstn Avenue from 6 to 0 p.m. Admsson s $5, and ncludes three food tckets. Students can buy tckets at the door but are encouraged to buy them n advance. The Oktoberfest s one of the ways the German Club educates the Unversty about German culture. "The German Club exsts to promote understandng and apprecaton of the German language and culture," sad Krste Foell, the club faculty advser. She sad the German Club tres to have as much (un as possble whle holdng nformatve and cultural events. She sad some of the actvtes are specfcally for people who speak German, but there are other actvtes for anyone n the commun- Chrstna Guenther, assocate professor of the German Club, sad Oktoberfest s the recreaton of the German Gemuetlchket, whch means enjoyment, comfort and feelng good, on the Un- versty campus. Guenther sad the club wll try to create that atmosphere by havng a lve band, dancng, sngng and compettons. Foell sad she hopes ths year's celebraton wll be a success. " would really lke ths year's event to be a bg success for the See OCTOBERFEST, page fve. Poltcal ssues focus on educaton The 998 electons wll be dealng wth debates over ssues of educaton. By BRAND BARHTE The fate of hgher educaton could be restng on the outcome of the 998 electon wth Unversty students beng affected. Ths year the bg race s for governor, yet several congressonal seats are also up for grabs wth educaton domnatng the debates. "Clearly the race for governor of Oho and the Senatoral race wll have an mpact on students," sad Davd Jackson, Amercan government nstructor. "The man ssue beng educaton fundng." Jackson sad Oho has been called on to revamp the K-2 educaton, and sacrfces could be made wth hgher educaton. He sad the man reason hgher educaton wll be sacrfced s because only an exclusve amount of people attend college, whle everyone goes to K-2. Allen Baldwn, charman of the Wood County Democratc Party also sad educaton fundng s one of the most mportant ssues ths electoral year. He sad hgher educaton could be salvaged durng educatonal reform. He also sad Bowlng Green s n a unque stuaton because t s a college town. Wth educaton n the forerunnng, the race for governor has been ugly. Jackson sad ths has been one of the most drty campagns ever and could affect voter turnout. The man race s between Robert Taft (R-Oho), the current Oho Secretary of State, and Lee Fsher (D-Oho). The other two canddates runnng are John R. Mtchell (Oho) for the Reform party and Zana Fetler (Oho) on the ndependent tcket. Taft, great-grandson of Wllam Howard Taft, 27th Presdent of the Unted States, s seekng to wn a classc governor race. f he wns he wll be the frst Oho Republcan to succeed a Republcan governor snce 903. Taft has sad he s lookng to develop programs to rehabltate young people who commt crmes. He also sad the Oho's schools need to be mproved. Current governor George Vonovch (R-Oho) s runnng for senator aganst former Cuyahoga County Commssoner Mary Boyle (D-Oho). ndependent Mchael Hoyt (Oho) s also on the ballot for the senator seat. They are competng for the seat John Glenn gave up. Other Congressonal races n Wood County nclude the 5th Congressonal Dstrct, where ncumbent Paul Gllmor (R- Oho) s runnng aganst Susan Darrow (D-Oho), BGSU assstant drector of the Honors Program. n the 9th Dstrct ncumbent Marcy Kaptur (D-Oho) s runnng aganst Edward Emery See ELECTON, page fve.

My best frend was Marquse, and he was black. One nght was spendng the nght at Marquse's house and hs brothera Marled makng fun of me because was whte. never understood there was a dfference between people untl ths pont. was so upset that cred myself to sleep that nght. Ths was my ntroducton nto the separaton between races. But here's the thng: the separaton of races s based on rdcule, fear, and msunderstandng. Anyone wth a bran and a college educaton should understand that all human bengs are related through genetcs and thought. All lfe on ths planet contans amno acds of the lefthand varety. Ths means that at a pont n planetary evoluton, lfe specalzed tself nto a common category. Left-handed amno acds aren't the only knd, because we've dscovered rghthand varety amno acds n nterstellar dust clouds n space. The socety of human bengs s a specalzed, but not ndependent form of nature. t s our ablty to communcate n the form of symbolsm (language) that has allowed us to become &» 358 the domnant speces on ths planet. Ths s as much a blessng as t s a curse. The very language that connects us s also the thng that separates us. That's why feel that we must proceed wth cauton when mplementng a multcultural currculum of educaton. t s mportant to be aware of other cultures and how they dffer. But t s far more mportant to understand that the same process of experence fundamentally connects all human bengs. f ths undenable fact s the foundaton of cultural studes, then the nsttuton wll be sound. f not, then the dfference between races wll be the focus, and not true cultural dversty. When the Naz's came to power, the frst thng they dd was to exclude certan people from ctzen status. Whether t was tew, homosexual, "feeblemnded,'' etc. The pont s that they ntroduced separaton nto the mnds of the people. fear that ths -. precsely what todaj s multcultural educaton s dong to the mnds of our ctzens. f we are dvded, then t wll be that much easer for us to be led and taken advantage of by unscrupulous and amoral systems. have been hghly nfluenced by the artstc expresson and scholarshp of other cultures. KRS-ONE, Malcolm X, Chef Seattle, and Jm Hendrx are as bg nfluences of mne as Henry Mller, Joseph Campbell, and Walt Whtman. The pont s that culture belongs to everyone. What you do and say affects me as much as what do affects you. Some thnk the whole whte race s forcng a conspracy on people of color. Let me say that f he were smart enough to plan a global conspracy aganst people of color, then the whte male would have bult a system that sn't fallng apart n front of our eyes. So save the whte devl routne, t's gettng old! On the other end of the spectrum, there are stll racal epthet Value of votng overlooked Where's the Food? Ths s the week when electon Coverage, both n The News and n newspapers natonwde, goes nto full swng. For the next week and a half, we'll be attendng ralles, makng faces at mudslngng campagn advertsements durng the o'clock news, and scoffng at the last-dtch efforts of canddates ^mvn 20 ponts n opnon polls ; On electon nght the newsroom ;\vll suck n every staff member we have and spt them out on pollng places, electon boards and canddate partes flled wth very happy or very dejected people. Reporters wll get excted and get to do stores on thngs that are n the back of people's heads but don't necessarly make the news everyday n other words, the "ssues " And at the end of t all, the same thng wll happen. A small mnorty of ctzens wll elect the people who wll lead us all. Reporters can then snk nto ther old cyncsm. Can you really blame us, though? The fact s, people just don't vote, and they don't generally have good reasons for dong so. Low turnout sn't the fault of some mysterous entty called "the people," though at least, t's not entrely ther fault. Our government, surprsngly, shouldn't escape blame. And dd menton journalsts' Reporters probably belong to the one professon that could ncrease voter turnout by sheer force ot wll After the '96 electon, wrote a column ralng aganst non-voters. beleve sad somethng to the effect that you shouldn't lve n the country f you don't vote. Of course, t was just my luck to meet someone at a party that nght who had a very well-reasoned, artculate argument for not votng. thnk he's the excepton, not the rule. Most of you who don't vote do so because you clout are or are too lazy though suspect that most people who have gotten ths far n a column of mne ether do vote or have a good reason for not dong so. Why don't people vote? Well, the regstraton process s a barrer, and sometmes gettng to the polls can be a problem for some people. t appears that most people just don't see how government affects ther lves. Thnk about your average day. Do you buy anythng? Go to school? Own a car? Then the poltcal clmate, and thus, the government, affects vou t would be nce to have a say, wouldn't t? Students are partcularly affected. Tuton doesn't cover the cost of your educaton, even as t sprals ever upwards. A large part of the educatonal costs come from tax dollars or perhaps, don't come from tax dollars, and nstead rom your pocketbook, as the case may be. Government matters even more f you care about somethng more than personal economcs (and even the most reactonary people have some sort of "socal cause"). Poltcans aren't known as a partcularly responsve group of people, and thus have largely faled n ther task, whch s to make government relevant to and benefcal to ctzens. "For the people, by the people and of the people?" More lke "by a few people, for those people and ther frends." Apathy creates a Catch-22. Poltcans who don't care turn voters off, who then don't vote, so the poltcans don't really have to thnk about respondng to those voters needs. Ths s the root of low voter turnout among students. f even half, or maybe even onethrd, of Unversty students voted on Nov. 3, BG poltcans would be forced to lsten to us the next tme around. am cyncal, but yes t could happen. Sweet revenge mght be n order. Akron was the team who sent the Falcons rollng downhll. Saturday wll be two weeks to the day snce the Zps halted a BG three-game wnnng streak. The loss to Mam at Anderson Arena on Wednesday made t fve straght losses for BG. They are now -2, 4-6 n the Md- Amercan Conference (MAC), droppng below.500 for the frst tme ths year. "Akron s the Rubber Cty and we wll bounce back," coach Dense Van V Walle sad "t was the Akron match that started ths turn. Let's have the Akron match turn t back. Last tme we played them the bg key was ther left sdes, offensvely and defensvely. They dug a lot of balls on the left. Ashley Case and Jule McDvtt dd a great job aganst us." Both teams have been headed n dfferent drectons snce Oct. 0. Whle BG has fallen on hard tmes, the Zps have won two of ther last three matches wth vctores over Central Mchgan and Oho. n contrast, the Falcons were routed by both CMU and OU ths year, losng n three straght games. Aganst CMU, Akron posted 89 klls, second most n school hstory. Ther 262 attack attempts were the thrd most n hstory. Junor htter Km Branam had a career best wth 62 attacks. Akron s 7-3 n the conference, 0-8 overall. The loss to Mam drops the Falcons nto nnth place n the overall MAC race. The top eght teams at the end of the season wn bds nto the conference tournament. BG s comng off one of ther weakest offensve performances of the season on Wednesday. As a team, the Falcons ht just.053, well below coach Dense Van De Walle's goal of.240 per game. We'll do that gametme Saturday." A key factor n the game wll be the BG secondary vs. Kent junor quarterback Jose Davs. The Falcon secondary, consstng of Morty Bryce, Junor Wllams, Chad Long and Karl Rose wll be tested all day. Davs has thrown the ball 246 tmes n seven games that's averagng over 35 attempts per game. And wth a 55.5 completon percentage, Davs s the playmaker of the Flashes. Senor wdeout Eugene Baker, Davs' man target, s out for the RedHawks. Murphy leads the MAC wth 5.08 klls per game. n her recent slump, she has dropped from 5.4 whch had her sxth n the NCAA. The "MAC Kller" s currently ranked 2th n the naton. Junor classmate Melssa Lews has been hot of late, excludng the Mam match. n the prevous two matches aganst Eastern and Western Mchgan, Lews posted 23 klls, one short of a career best, aganst EMU. She had 22 aganst WMU season wth a fractured clavcle. Steppng n for Baker s freshman Jurron Kelly. Last week he had sx catches for 6 yards. Wth Kent's defense, or lack thereof, the Falcons should have an easy tme movng the ball. The Golden Flashes rank last n the MAC n total defense, gvng up an average of yards. Freshman talback Godfrey Lews wll start at talback for the Falcons. But the Falcons have more depth at the poston wth the emergence of Steve Holmes last Saturday. Holmes had a 43- yard touchdown run and ran for 73 yards on the day. the followng nght. She already has her personal best 38 klls ths season toppng last year's 277. The Zps wll go to Kent tonght for a warm-up before returnng home to Rhodes Arena for the match aganst BG. The Falcons have won the last two matches between these two at Rhodes Arena. n fact, the vstng team has been vctorous n each of ther last fve meetngs. 12 ' A queston of actvtes Of course there are thngs to do n ths town. There's the nght lfe: the partes, bars, etc. But what about the everyday actvtes that the Unversty and ts organzatons hold? On a large campus such as ths, dversty s always present. Obvously ths s a good thng; f everyone were exactly the same t would be a very bland world. We just happen to attend a unversty that makes a very bg deal of the subject. We have groups for absolutely every type person on ths campus. There are groups and specal events for women, gay and lesban students, Afrcan-Amercans, Latno-Amercans and others. Each specfc group makes a bg effort to offer specal programs. For example, we have Women's Health Month, Latnopalooza, Comng Out Week and the lke. Ths s great for students who want to attend somethng where people lke them wll be present. But the queston n my mnd s, could these specalzed events be overpowerng the Unversty's general actvty lfe? The queston s based on the fact that the Unversty seems to be focused on makng everyone feel lke there s somethng here for them. Everyone should be able to be a part of somethng wthout lettng who they are hold them back. But s there a pont when the attempt to create equalty s just too much? "Poltcally correct" -that's the phrase of the day, or of the decade, for that matter. Those two words seem to be all that certan people care about n our present socety. You can barely do anythng wthout someone questonng whether or not t s "PC." Everyone, especally those nvolved n the poltcal world, seems to be concerned wth makng sure that a person's lfestyle or hertage does not hold them back. Hence, the many groups structured for specfc people. What about the people who don't ft n to any of those groups? Let's face t, that would leave us wth whte, heterosexual males. But a lot of tmes, there are so many actvtes amed towards everyone else that these men mght feel left out. Should there be "Man's Week" n order to make them feel part of the dversfed campus lfe? n order to make every student feel lke they're welcome at every event, the Unversty needs to better the advertsng for such events, maybe by not namng so many events as beng strctly for a certan group (or at least mplyng ths)?my suggeston to all of those students who do feel left out: attend anythng you want to, (and maybe even thngs you don't want to), t may open your mnd to an entrely new way of experencng ths school. NEW MUSC + N-2 u v> L*y BG New* Photo/JASON SUGGS No Cover: Ton Years ot Flyer Art from Bowlng Green opens today at Renassance on Man St. 'No Cover' looks at 0 years of flyer art By ROBERT SZORADY n today's muscal clmate, t s a commonplace occurrence for bands that suddenly become monstrously successful to forget ther roots. n a smlar fashon, for every Pearl Jam or Smashng Pumpkns, there are hundreds upon hundreds of local bands, trudgng through hours of rehearsal and endurng numerous personalty clashes, all just to get a momentary grasp of that fabled brass rng. Of course, Bowlng Green s no stranger to local band. From bands of the past, such as Naked Lunch, Madhatter and Proof Of Utah, to bands of the present, such as The Knd, Aloha and Paper Plate, Bowlng Green has always (to the dsmay of numerous cyncs and naysayers) had a vbrant and ongong musc scene. Ths musc scene, the blend of musc both tmeless and of the moment, s showcased n the new exhbton No Cover: Ten Years of Flyer Art from Bowlng Green, openng at the Renas- sance Gallery. Compled and arranged by Anthony Buehrer, Phllp Dcknson and Dan Stutzman, the exhbton contans hundreds of flyers from the past and present, from black and whte collages to more omate flyers llustratng the hallucnatory fantases of a few would-be muscal dssdents. They plan on pckng, out of a thousand ntrgung and wonderful choces, the ones they feel best represent the 0-year perod of musc they are focusng on. "Phl and just started talkng about t a year ago," Stutzman sad. "t was a spur of the moment thng. t festered n our brans for awhle, and we just sad 'Let's Do t!"' Stutzman sad t was not as hard as one would thnk collectng up to a thousand flyers, many of them relatvely obscure. "We knew a lot of people n bands, and we smply asked them," he sad. "After that, we thought 'Why not ask everybody?' Some people gave 30 flyers, whle some gave 300." Stutzman noted that he wanted the publc to come away from the exhbton wth an apprecaton for the local musc scene. "n Bowlng Green, there's an atttude of There's nothng here' or 'There's no good musc scene'," Stutzman sad. "There are so many dedcated muscans and artsts n ths communty. We all have lved n many dfferent places, and Bowlng Green has as good a musc scene as anywhere else. We want people to recognze that." To say one s n support of local musc s vastly dfferent from actually beng n support, from frequentng local shows and revelng n all the musc Bowlng Green offers, to spreadng the gospel of a partcular band you beleve no one gves much credt. f musc s truly to be an adventure, one must not smply rest content. As they say, the names of the bands and the flyers tell a story whch has been largely forgotten. They have collected as many flyers as they can n order to offer the publc a glmpse nto Bowlng Green's muscal past, and to let these bands lve agan. The exhbton opens tonght at 7 at the Renassance Gallery at 3-5 N. Man St., wth entertanment by K-Mnd, The Plastc Factory and DJ Flptrck. Proceeds wll go to The Lnk. Ths dsturbngly real tale of schzophrena and the pan that t brngs s certan to reman wth audences. Elsewhere Theatre performances have always been more expermental than the man stage shows, and ths twsted tale s no excepton. From the moment you walk nto the theater, you get the sense that somethng s not qute rght. Wth psychologcal musc hssng n the background, the openng set has all the decorum of an nsane asylum complete wth a straght jacket. Welcome to the world of Catherne (Karen Von Glahn), a young poet whose lfe has been thrown nto chaos by schzophrena. Even at her best moments, her llness s never far behnd. Several techncal elements combned wth top-notch actng come together to wage all-out psychologcal warfare wth the audence. rdescent green lghtng and several other chaotc lghtng effects set the tone for Catherne's desperaton. Congratulatons go to Ana Perera and Megan Prhoda for creatng such a pathologcal clmate, as well as sound desgner Amy Monfort for nterweavng a dsquetng soundtrack. Despte these dsturbng work condtons, the cast manages to pull off an excellent performance. Heather Seffert s perfectly pompous as Joanne, Catherne's psychatrst, and equally sensual as the voce that roams nsde Catherne's head. Monfort doubles as Alce, Catherne's concerned but dsconnected frend and boss. Workng as a perfect fol to Catherne's shftness, Brad Abner effectvely portrays Robert, Catherne's rock-sold love nterest. There s lttle doubt, however, as to who the star of ths show s. n her Unversty theater debut, Karen Von Glahn's portrayal of Catherne s frghtenngly realstc. Von Glahn copes the movements of a schzophrenc perfectly Perhaps even more mpressve s the dfferent levels of emoton necessary to portray Catherne. t would be a challenge for any actress to accomplsh, but Von Glahn pulls the entre range off seemlessly. n such an ntmate settng as Elsewhere, one almost wants to physcally reach out to Catherne from your seat as she fghts through her battle wth mental llness. Ths would be a four star play f not for ts very nature. The constant exposure to Catherne's psychologcal state really gets nto your head mdway through the performance. Beyond dstractng, ths could have a very negatve effect on some audence members. Due to ths, and scenes of a sexually explct nature, vewer dscreton s strongly advsed. Standng s extremely effectve n accomplshng ts prmary goal: gettng the audence to experence the horror of schzophrena frsthand. Once the play s over, t's dffcult to know whether to applaud or cry. 13 page N-2 Frday, October 23, 998 m O «J MT* ed; Jon Spencer Blues Exploson: Acme Matador/Captol Matador Record's resdent sex symbol Jon Spencer and hs cohorts Russell Smns and Judah Bauer return to the musc scene wth extra flava. Ther new album. Acme, was recorded n sx dfferent studos wth the lkes of Steve Albn, Dan "The Automator" Nakamura, K Record's Calvn Johnson, (who produced Beck's One Foot n the Grave) and others. JSBX created a name for themselves wth Orange, a spare, groundbreakng LP. They mxed blsterng blues gutar, a strpped down drum set and another tuned-down gutar n place of bass. Acme captures the Blues Exploson's style just as well as ther last three albums. Ther last CD, Now Got Worry, started off heavy and broke nto the more rhythmc, funky peces later on (some of them courtesy of bluesgreat R.L. Burnsde). Acme seems to do the opposte. t opens wth "Calvn," an nstrumental that "Lays t on ya'," as the song's sample from Calvn Johnson says. Then t grooves nto "Magcal Colors," "Do You Wanna Get Heavy?" and "Hgh Gear" whch all seem to be on the slower sde of the Blues Exploson spectrum. After "Hgh Gear" the album starts to turn nto the usual Blues Exploson party. Wth the songs "Talk About the Blues," "Berne," "Torture" and "Attack," the band explodes wth flavor. Spencer's songs are always well textured and taut wth rhythm, and ths album s no dfferent. f you've never heard the Blues Exploson before, ths album wll blow you away. The only problem s that fans who know ther sound mght be dsapponted. t's not because they've strayed nto some expermental folk/hp-hop stuff, but that they haven't done that. The album sounds exactly lke ther old materal. don't thnk t crosses any muscal borders that breaks JSBX and Beck albums haven't already broken. But f you haven't heard the "blues," you're mssng out bg tme. Mchael Plancka FLAT-DUO ' TBrSfV Flat Duo Jets: Lucky Eye E T S Oupost Flat Duo Jets defntely have a very dstnctve style. They're a twosome that manly focus are pure rock and roll, just drums and gutar. They try to recreate the '50s surf gutar sound, whle throwng n some blues and jazz too. Ths type of sound s not heard that much, and to some ths could be a refreshng change of pace. They're clearly a very talented and orgnal band, but stll have two very serous flaws, the songwrtng and the snger. Sometmes the musc more than makes up for t. But for the most part, t severely crpples the album, makng t very hard to enjoy. The album starts out wth the ttle track, "Lucky Eye," whch practcally has no words. Actually, t has fve words: "lucky," "eye," "oh," "well" and "hey." Sadly, ths s one of the best songs of the CD. LT3 The rest of the songs are mostly just choruses repealed over and' over agan. They become trng, and soon, just plan annoyng. Tunes lke "Love s All Around" only have fve lnes and are very smlar to all the other songs. Ths s made even worse because the sgner smply cannot sng. Hs voce s very hoarse. t has lttle range and s bascally )ust ell key walng. On "Strng Along" and "Lonely Guy," he almost sounds lke he's tryng to mtate a country snger (badly). t does not ft the style of the band, and t becomes even more annoyng because of the bad lyrcs. Because of these two huge problems, the band only truly shnes durng the nstrumental ongs Unfortunately, they don't even make up half of the CD. These songs are manly gutardrven surf rock, remnscent of oldes lke "Wpeout." "Creepn' nventon" has great gutar wth some excellent solos, and the other two surf gutar songs, "Rockn' Mode" and "Calforna Luau" are clearly the best of the album. They blend gutar, drums, saxophone and the occasonal pano and create a terrfc texture. t makes me wonder what would've happened f they would've taken out the snger's voce and replaced t wth gutar on all the songs. They probably would have had a much better album. "Lonely Guy" s so soporfc and depressng t could be used as a tranqulzer. "Hot Rod Baby" remnds everyone why they don't lke '50s musc. t's bascally the same lne over and over agan, wth tred borng gutar backng up the tred borng snger. The gutar whnes and the snger wals, a truly horrble combnaton. Of course, not all of the songs wth vocals are that bad. The ttle track, whle pretty much lackng n actual words, s very good. t's bascally a surf gutar song wth vocals, and hs walng fts qute ncely wth the tone of the song. There's also the last track, "Lttle M," the only song on the CD where actually lked the vocals. They were such an mprovement, ddn't beleve that t was even the same guy! Hs range n ths song s so much better, hs voce s smooth and he actually hts the notes. However, those two songs alone don't save the album, (nor do the 5 nstrumentals). t's too bad, because Flat Duo Jets s a very talented band wth a unque sound. Hopefully ther next one wll feature nstrumental tracks only. Ether that or the snger wll fnally wse up and take some voce lessons. Flat Duo Jets s an example of a band wth great talent and horrble executon. -lames Eldred + See MUSC, page N-3 Brde of Chucky' revves seres By ANTHONY RECZNK Beleve t or not, t's actually been 0 years snce that pntszed psycho Chucky frst ht the bg screen * n 988's Chld's Play.
