The hockey squads have continued to train strongly since Christmas with the main focus now being on the lower years performances in the County Tournaments and in the District Indoor Competition. District Indoor Competition We entered two teams in the local event against Deeping, Spalding High, Bourne Academy and Stamford Welland Academy. As usual the girls were empowered with specific tactics to use for indoor play and with the usual Bourne Grammar mantra of the most important thing is to enjoy yourselves closely followed by but we want to win. The girls in both Year 7 and 8 gave of their best throughout and were thrilled by their performances against Spalding High School, whom they narrowly lost to in matches earlier in the year and scored some fantastic goals against both Deeping and Bourne Academy. U13 Boys County Following an excellent sing-a-long on the bus, the boys were ready to start their first major competition. Having never played together before they were excited but apprehensive about the day. Many boys had never represented the school in anything before and did so with real pride. The first game against Spalding Grammar was very hard fought with Ben Wheatcroft and Oscar Morley guiding and helping the others to find their feet. Luke Tooth in goal made some excellent reactive saves keeping the team in contention for a long period. However, experience and an amazing reverse undercut goal, separated the teams and the boys eventually lost 3-1. The game against Lincoln was an excellent one and very well matched for form. Tom Chaytor was a real powerhouse in the team constantly chasing back and then driving forward to support his team mates whilst Ben hypnotised the opposition with his fast hand skills whilst dribbling. The boys recorded a win in this game but went on to come fourth out of five. U13 Girls County The girls went in to this event knowing that it was all about progress. The girls showed more than this as they demonstrated what Bourne Grammar is all about and that is showing real courage in facing large challenges and attacking them and not hiding. With every game they grew in confidence, belief and understanding and in the final games played as well as many of the previous County winning Bourne Grammar teams. Nancy Simmons even carried on with broken fingers as she didn t want to let the team down and she became an inspirational figure upon whom the team relied to make endless fearless tackles. Izzy Pearson grew in self belief as she made run after run down the wing showing strong attacking skills and more decisive passing through to Millie Durrands who finally relaxed and found her missile like shooting ability. A fantastic day and one which will be remembered by me not for the result but for the manner in which the girls behaved and played. An inspiration to all of the teams here. U14 Winter Games Competition Our girls went to Grantham Meres as the favourites to win the County tournament and following training at the weekend before the girls were ready for the event. They started excellently winning comfortably 5-0 against Monks Dyke School and followed this with some exceptional performances against Skegness Grammar and Kesteven where the girls demolished the opposition Outstanding goals from Kara Morton and hard work from Chloe Ladley and Georgia Morton led to the girls being able to relax into their natural style of play. Sophie Brittain was a new addition to the squad and played really well justifying her selection. The final result hinged upon the match against Spalding High School which was, unfortunately for us, our first legal game as due to administrative errors our first game had to be replayed. The girls scored early on but lost focus too easily and lost discipline across the team in their desperation to win and eventually lost 2-1 despite having several good goal scoring opportunities. However, the team recovered from this disappointment to finish in second by a clear margin and Georgia Morton was voted Player of the Season. Despite not achieving our usual spread of medals the students have all played in a professional manner and demonstrated some top quality Hockey and I would like to thank them all for their dedication to training and matches. In particular a big thank you to Eliot Bates without whom my job as a coach would be much harder. We undertook many friendlies in the New Year with the best match against King s School, Peterborough, which resulted in the ball going end to end with some outstanding displays of both individual skill and team play. No goals were scored despite there being many attempts at goal. (CPB) County Representatives: Jess Teesdale, Georgia Morton, Brendan Andrews, Eliot Bates, Oscar Morley, Ben Wheatcroft, Sophie Brittain, Nancy Simmons, Phoebe Martin. English Schools Cross Country Championships Saturday 14 March, Blackburn The largest ever contingent from Bourne Grammar attended the Finals of the ESAA Cross Country Championships, held recently in Blackburn. Qualification for the event has seen students progress through the South Lincs Championships, then finish in the top 8 at the County Championships. These students then progressed to represent Lincolnshire at the Anglian Championships in Ipswich and finally to Blackburn. The course was a particularly challenging one for those who train in the Fens and the long and steep inclines on the course, coupled with wide areas of mud, unable to be avoided, proved to hinder our students more than most. All performed exceptionally well. Aaron Hunt (Y9), Isabel Spinley (Y9) and Hana Ray (Y8) competed in the Junior races for Years 8&9, whilst Beth Howells (Y12), Michael Cawood (Y12) and James McCrae (Y13) competed in the Senior races (Years 12&13). All students were in the top 6 finishers for Lincolnshire, thus contributing to the team scores. The best placed individual was James McCrae (far left, 277)who completed the course in 26 mins 11 secs and in 43rd place, an outstanding achievement and one of the Schools highest ever finishers. 2 Girls Go From Strength To Strength 2 Regional Netball Finals East Midlands Division Bourne Grammar Schools U14 N e t b a l l t e a m r e p r e s e n t e d Lincolnshire at the East Midlands tournament held at Leicester Grammar School on Saturday 28 February. This is the first time in the school s history that a team from Bourne Grammar has reached this level and we expected a tough test in a tournament that is t r ad it ion a lly d om in a te d b y Independent schools. None of the games were going to be easy! The first match was against Oundle School who are regular National Finalists. Bourne started off well in a very tight and competitive match. There was very little between the teams but Bourne just had the edge and won 6 5. A fantastic start! The next opposition were Uppingham and the Bourne players and supporters were surprised by the extreme physicality of the Uppingham team which we had never encountered before. The constant contact was not controlled and it did affect the flow of Bourne s game and Bourne unfortunately lost 3 7. It was certainly a match we could have won and the players felt cheated and were very disappointed. The girls picked themselves up though for their third match against West Bridgeford School and played some outstanding netball to win 7 1. The group was extremely close at this stage and Bourne needed to win their final game to go through to the semi-finals. The players knew what they had to do against Ecclesbourne School. They worked hard but could not catch up the early lead that Ecclesbourne had built up with their accurate shooting and unfortunately lost 4 9. B o t h O u n d l e a n d Uppingham won their semifinals and the final went into extra time with Oundle being c r o w n e d R e g i o n a l Champions. The players can be very proud of themselves from the way they have trained leading up to the tournament to their tremendous play and conduct on the day. They did beat the regional champions! A special thank you must go to Sinclairs of Stamford who sponsored hoodies and jackets for the girls and they really looked the part! The players are always well supported by the parents which is greatly appreciated and many thanks to Miss Brewster for her support on and off courtside plus the sports mixtures! (JM) U14 Squad Amelia Gardner (captain), Lily Storer, Sinead Mandy, Polly Luscombe, Chloe Ladley, Gabby Marechal, Georgia Morton, Julia Eglin and Lily Gray. County Finalists 2015 The greatest achievement of the football season so far has to be by the Under 13 girls team. They reached the final of the Lincs FA County Cup, played at Lincoln College. We always knew that Spalding High School would be tough opposition, and it certainly proved to be the case. We started very brightly and should have taken the lead on three occasions. However some wayward finishing and some excellent goalkeeping kept us at bay. Spalding then scored two quick goals against the run of play, despite the best efforts of stand out player of the season Molly Bull in goal. Then three excellent individual goals by Spalding in the last 5 minutes of the first half really knocked the stuffing out of us. 5-0 was an extremely harsh half-time scoreline, but we didn t let our heads drop and worked hard to win the second half 1-0. A great effort! In the end Spalding s older Year 8 s managed to adapt to the big pitch better and deserved the win. With only three Year 8 s in the BGS side things look very bright for next year. Revenge will be sweet! The Under 12 girls will be looking to progress into the 3rd Round of the ESFA National Cup when they entertain Skegness Academy in the last week of term. (ACG) 2

3 Regional Dominance At Cross Country 3 Fenland League - Race 3 - Burghley Park, Stamford Year 7 & 8 Girls With the competition still hanging in the balance, the Year 7&8 team needed to perform well if they were to hold onto the first place gained in October. On a chilly afternoon the girls started positively, with strong running throughout the course seeing Elin James (pictured) finishing in 5th place, closely followed by Year 7&8 Girls Hana Ray in Team positions Pts 9th. With Megan Stuart and Shannon Woodfine just into double figures, the team could finally celebrate retaining the title won last year. 5th Hana Ray 4th 3rd, 9th Year 7 & 8 Boys Unfortunately results from the previous races meant that this competition was effectively over before it began, such was the difference in scores prior to the start of the race. However, not to be deterred, the team, consisting mainly of Year 7 boys performed very well. First home at Burghley park for the team was Elliott Bellamy who finished strongly in 7th, closely followed by Lewis Woodfine and Jared Miller in 8th and 9th respectively. An experienced team have had new faces join during the course of the year, with Neve Hattee performing well across the 3 races. Isabel Spinley completed the race in an excellent 2nd position to secure 2nd in the individual competition. Molly Bennett also ran well to finish in 11th, whilst a very strong run from Georgia Morton to finish strongly in 15th was a pleasing end to the league races for the girls who had a lre ad y ef f ec t iv e ly secured the team title w i t h s t r o n g performances in the two races prior to Christmas. The girls now need to look to build on this next year in the National Cup. Year 9 & 10 Boys Some exceptional individual performances for the boys ensured that the League title would be won on the night having had 6 of the first 15 places being taken by Bourne Grammar students. A delighted Bradley Allan secured a well deserved victory. To add to the success, all 6 who ran on the =9th Harrison Dee 22nd, 25th, 14th night for Bourne Grammar secured their own place as individuals in the top 10, an exceptional achievement. However it was truly a great performance from all 32 students on the evening who ran superbly to make this our best ever cross country season in the region, winning 14 of a possible 16 shields during the year. 4 4 Out Of 5 Titles Is Best Ever For Girls 4 Year 7 The girls have had a wonderful season winning all of their league games and taking a place in the Super Zone Final. They also claimed the tournament title by winning all of their games against the other seven schools. All the girls played extremely well and Amy Webster stepped up to play out of position for the second half of the tournament, doing an outstanding job and claiming my player of the tournament. Elin James captained the team and has done a wonderful job organising the girls for fixtures since September. Well done. (GCH) Year 8 The Year 8 team have also had a winning streak, remaining unbeaten in the league to claim a place in the Super Zone Final. The girls also had a wonderful tournament, only narrowly losing to Spalding to take runners up overall. I am so proud of the girls and their improvements this year. My thanks must go to Hana Ray for captaining the team and making sure everyone knows the fixture details and is prepared for matches. Keep up the hard work girls! (GCH) Year 9 In the South Lincs League, the Year 9 team are undefeated and have been in in different class to the opposition. This term they have beaten Bourne Academy, Spalding High, Sir John Gleed and UAH by very big margins and have qualified for the league final. (JM) Year 10 Our Year 10 netball team only had one league match against Spalding High this term and they were a bit rusty and lost. They picked themselves up to play in the South Lincs Tournament and played some lovely netball. The had comfortable wins against Deeping, Giles, UAH and Thomas Cowley. The girls played very well against Boston High who were Regional finalist last year and held them for the first half but Boston pulled away to win. Bourne were runner s up. Well done to all of the players. (JM) Year 11 The Year 11 girls have had a busy end to their season with five games in a matter of weeks. Their main rivals have always been Spalding and the match was extremely close throughout. Spalding went out fast and we had to work hard in the second quarter to pull it back close, but we just didn t have enough to clench the win. There was some outstanding netball and excellent channel work that at times made the movement down court look effortless. Lauren Brown has been a real driving force in the team, coupled with Bethany Denial they have made a formidable pair of captains. The girls will claim runners up in the league this year and I hope many of them continue to play as they move into the Sixth Form. (GCH) 6th Form The Sixth Form netball has been a great success this year and the team are unbeaten in all of their games since Christmas. Netball matches are played on alternate Wednesday afternoon as part of the electives programme. In Baltic conditions, the home match against The King s School, Peterborough was moved indoors and reduced to a 6-a-side game. The players were superb in this match with excellent shooting from Olivia Conway and Nicole Kenyon and Captain Lily Hughes covering the court well and anticipating all the opposition moves. Bourne were the winners against a very good side! The match against Carres Grammar was a close physical encounter and played at a fast pace. Meg Anderson had a strong game in defence and there was very little between the teams until the final quarter but the superior fitness and focus of the Bourne players resulted in a win. The final match of the season was against Boston College who had been tough opponents at the district tournament earlier in the year. After a close first half and excellent centre court play from Hannah Worthington and Lisa Coppins, the players upped their game and with Lily Hughes and Alice Smith combining well in defence, Bourne ran away with a win. Well done to all of the squad for an enjoyable season playing high level netball. (JM) Super Zone Finals Four of our five teams qualified for the Finals this year and on Monday night Year 7, 9 & 11 all claimed their titles winning 12-3, 30-6 and respectively. Tuesday night saw the Year 8 s first representation at a final and they play really well, narrowly missing out to Boston High. A big thank y o u t o M r s Cunnington for her sweet treat to celebrate the Year 11 s last game. (GCH) Twickenham Trip Prior to the Christmas Break Miss Brewster and Mr Graves organised a trip to the home of English Rugby, Twickenham. We set off early every body in good spirits excited for the day ahead. Once we arrived we were all given lanyards with access all areas stadium tours passes and began the tour around the stadium, seeing every aspect from the changing rooms, the Presidents Room to even sitting in the dug out pitch side looking onto bright green grass of Twickenham. The boys asked some very good and interesting questions to the tour guides and we hope learnt a lot from their tour round Twickenham. We then went into the English Rugby Museum. We spent a good hour and a half in the museum looking at all the exhibits. There was a section in the museum where various aspects of a rugby player could be tested such as power, agility, force when scrimmaging. The boys became very competitive and even Mr Graves fancied his chances. All in all a great season! Well done boys! (EJB/ACG) 4

5 Footballers Fall Short At Final Hurdles 5 Year 7 Year 7 continued in a positive manner as the season resumed following the winter break when the team travelled to University Academy Holbeach in the County Cup. The team played some fantastic football and won convincingly Sitting at the top of the league, the team then travelled to Spalding Grammar School. Proving to be a key game in the league, it was important to get a good foothold in the game early on. This didn t happen, the game was fairly even but Spalding managed to take their chances leading to a half-time score of 3-0. Understandably the boys were extremely disappointed, but it was important they kept their heads up and kept going. What a second half! A change in system and a dogged determination from every player on the pitch led to an equaliser in the final seconds of the game and a victory on penalties. Harry Lesiw, Will Hawkins and Lewis Woodfine led by example, working tirelessly and showing real quality in the final third. The final two games of the season against Sir John Gleed and University Academy Holbeach were a joy to watch. The team played with conviction, skill and great enthusiasm to win 9-0 and 3-1 respectively. The team deserved to finish on a high as they have played with great determination and desire throughout the whole season. To finish runners up in the league is a great accomplishment. Well done. Year 8 As a squad, all continue to impress in their attendance at training and their positive approach in wanting to improve and play quality, passing football. Against Sir John Gleed, some excellent inter-changes across the pitch enabled the team to earn a comfortable 9-1 victory. Jacob Westley and Luke Toomey have led by example, working tirelessly and showing real quality. The score against Spalding Grammar wasn t a fair reflection on how close it was between the teams (lost 7-2). A real high quality game with both teams trying to keep the ball on the floor. Unfortunately Spalding played well on the counter attack and took advantage of space left behind as Bourne attempted to get back into the game. Whilst we still struggle to cope with the physical size of Boston Grammar School in the 2 nd round of the County Cup (Lost 3-2). The final game of the season (4-0 win v Bourne Academy) proved that the passing game is one that suits the team. A 2 nd place finish in the league is a fair reflection of the season, but next year the team should look to build on this and challenge for the league. Well done to the whole squad. (SC) Team - Luke Tooth, Milan Spasojevic, Samuel Hallam, George Warrington, Sam Sacker, Sam Crane, Tim Worgan, Ridley Braid, Evan Wright, Sam Jordan, Jacob Westley, Sam Callcut, Elliot Bellamy and Owen Thomas Year 9 A terrific season was concluded with four games this half-term and the team spirit has been excellent throughout. In a challenging game against Gleed just after half-term, the pitch was the biggest obstacle, with long grass on a bobbly pitch, normally the best in the league. Harrison Dee opened the scoring in a hard fought game with a well taken penalty, before Tom Lavender scored a wonder-goal from outside the box, clearing the keeper into the far corner of the goal. The following week versus The Peele School, the team was caught napping. Having missed a number of chances, we found ourselves down 3-1 at half-time after a number of silly mistakes costing the team dearly. Following a discussion at half-time, the team rallied with goals from Lucas Kimpton, Harrison Dee and Richard Earley. Victory however remained unlikely being 4-3 down with just 3 minutes left. Somehow though, a point seemed to be rescued with a second goal from Harrison, before a final long hopeful ball in the seconds fell to Luke Heppenstall. With a mix-up between the Peele keeper and defender, it was left to Luke to coolly slot home to claim all 3 points. The penultimate game of the season against Spalding Grammar would ultimately decide the League. Their big, physical team got to grips with the game quickly and with too much respect shown, we found ourselves down half way through the first half. However, credit to the team as Nandeli Pelembe pulled a goal back just minutes later. Elliot Price continued to tackle anything that moved and Chris Beresford produced some good saves to keep us in the game. Richard Earley and Oliver Smith picked a few bruises as they worked tirelessly to harass Spalding. It would however prove to be a goal just two minutes from time that would be our un-doing. A long ball from the back and a mis-timed tackle left the Spalding forward with time and space to hit the corner of the goal. Despite being disappointed with the result, I was delighted at the spirit and fight shown by the whole team. Goals from Patrick Schwarz and Elliot Price in the final game against UAH would provide a win, but the score should have arguably been more than double that before half-time. It has been an excellent season however, well done boys. (CJR) Year 10 The final two games for the Year 10 team produced an exciting 4-4 draw against The Gleed, with goals from Ben Woodward and three from a hard-working Olly Goode (eventually won 5-4 on penalties) and a 3-0 loss to Spalding Grammar. During the season there have been some excellent performances from individuals including Joshua Asplin, Joseph Stephens and Stuart Westley, but also from Ben Woodward, Ben Moss and Olly Goode, the latter three of which have all played with confidence for the Year 11 team this season. Well done to all. (CJR) Year 11 The new year started very well for the Year 11 football team. Four straight wins put us in the 3rd round of the County Cup and in a strong position to challenge for the league. Unfortunately, the season reached an anti-climax and unfortunately then finished with 3 losses in a row! An exciting game in the County Cup saw us on the wrong side of a game in which we played our best football of the season. Conceding after 30 seconds could have seen us lay down but the lads showed great character to gain a 2-1 lead. A goal mouth scramble in the last minute saw St Georges snatch a draw and take the tie into extra time. To their credit St Georges caught us on the counter attack and nicked a winner in the 1st half of extra time. The league decider finished in similar, disappointing fashion. It came down to a head-to-head against Spalding. If we won we would have qualified. Unfortunately a great goal and a defensive mistake put us 2-0 down at half time and we couldn't quite do enough to claw it back. In summary this season had the potential to be fantastic and at times showed great promise but somewhat fizzled out in the end. Special mention must go to Tom Login who marshalled the midfield well all season and Alfie Hick, whose tireless work rate and goals gave us a chance in most games. (ACG). 5

6 County Finals For Year 9 Basketball 6 Year 8 The Year 8 team have had a fantastic season finishing 2nd in their respective league. With all players consistently turning up to training and pushing themselves as hard as they can the boys finished the season only losing their first match against Spalding. The squad beat all other opposition comfortably, with their last game against Gleed leading to a 24-8 demolition. Well done to all players. (AMB) Year 9 This year has proven to be a frustrating one with very much of a so near, so far feeling. An early defeat to Spalding in November was the only one of the campaign in the league and the students have trained exceptionally well during the two terms. It was however that early defeat, in a game that Bourne dominated, that would ultimately cost us the league title. This term though in two very tight games, the team beat The Peele School and then, at home, narrowly beat Gleed in a feisty affair that finished Following the success of the team as Year 8 s (winning the Superzone title), we entered this year s County finals at Carres Grammar with confidence. After an early setback in the first game, the team steadily improved to finish as Lincolnshire U14 runners-up. The season has bought the best out of many players and whilst the likes of Tom Hutchins and Harrison Dee have had to step up to the mark, Jack Fitch has made outstanding progress during the year. Matthew Holmes and Nandeli Pelembe have also made significant progress and Jared Carver has performed well in his first year. Well done to all. The close games that we didn t quite do enough to win last year were lessons that we learnt from and we put it right this year, culminating in an unbeaten league season! The Superzone final was in all honesty probably a step too far. With three players away on the Spanish Exchange the boys that stepped up from Year 9 did a great job, but a strong (and very tall!) Haven High side were able to out muscle our smaller, more skilful players out of the game. It was none the less a great experience that we will learn from. Olly Goode, William Worgan, Ben Moss and Joshua Callisto really stepped up to the mark this year as senior players and were all given the Equestrian Club Gets First Outing Pictured: Hollie Lewis Year 7 student Hollie Lewis with her pony That Chocolate Moment rode brilliantly in the 70cm individual class, just bringing home an unlucky 12 faults. On Sunday 22 February, the newly formed BGS Equestrian Club, had its first outing to an Inter-Schools Equestrian Competition (organised by the National Schools Equestrian Association - NSEA). The event was held at Arena UK, Grantham. Due to the timing of the competition (the last weekend of half-term) only one of our team members was able to compete in this event, however more competitions which incorporate all equestrian disciplines, have been scheduled throughout the year. Recent news: Sophie Vear came 3rd showjumping 90 cm and 1st showjumping 100cm at Sissons. Last weekend Hollie Lewis came 2nd at JumpCross and Sophie Vear came 5th at Arena Eventing. NSEA events are in the pipeline - check the website and 'save the date'. (A-MD) 6 opportunity to play in the Year 11 squad. A great season, well done. (ACG) Year 11 Year 11 have had a very up and down year due to their academic commitments within the school, building into their GCSE examinations this summer. The South Lincs league allowed them to play each opposition for the last time. The lads followed a solid start to the season beating Spalding, and losing to Bourne Academy, and by beating Peele comfortably keeping their composure against a team much more physical than previous opponents. Their final game saw them play against a very strong Sir John Gleed side. With the team defending impressively and Adam Castle making sure his man could not run the game, as years previous, the boys came out on top, winning impressively by 15 points. Harry Kirk and Tom Login played extremely well making sure the score board kept ticking over. Whilst Jack Scholes, Owen Bellamy and Sam Rudd (new to the squad this year) produced some great basketball in creating space and setting screens for the others to bring home the points. Unfortunately due to final school commitments the final match could not be played. The boys just missed out on a final. Overall it s been a pleasure to work with the squad over the past 5 years. (AMB).U18 Following on from an impressive start against Nottingham, the team went into their next national league game against Carres Grammar School full of optimism. The game was an extremely tight affair, with both teams flipping between different defensive strategies trying to find a tactical edge. Both teams felt the pressure of a local derby and the expectation that they should win. Both Carres and Bourne knew that realistically, looking at the other schools in their league, this game was a real opportunity to record a victory. This weight of expectation led to missed shots and handling errors. The Bourne team rallied in the final quarter to win The final league games were against Nottingham Academy first team and Noel Baker Academy, Derby. To put things into perspective both teams progressed to the final stages of the competition last year, with Noel Baker winning the competition. The standard in both games was extremely high and a real eye opener for our boys to play against the nation s best players. The game against Nottingham and Noel baker finished and respectively. The team finished their season on a high beating local rivals Deepings convincingly (SC) Team - Jordan Cotton, Alexander Thomas, Ben Keast, Conor Culverhouse, Will Aspinall, Scott Buxton, Alex Bremner and Nick Beresford.

7 7 Superb Weather In Italy For Ski Trip S o m e s u p e r b weather was the order of the week for the ski trip to Italy with almost a metre falling within hours of our arrival in the glacier resort of Passo Tonale, northern Italy. The trip, an annual affair for the past 7 years is always popular with students and once again the joint trip with Spalding High ran extremely smoothly. The 24 hour coach trip flew by (well almost!) and an early afternoon arrival game time for the 48 skiers and 8 boarders enough time to complete the ski fit in a relaxed manner. During the course of the next 6 days the students enjoyed 24 hours of lessons (6 days of lessons with 2 in the morning and 2 in the afternoon) and a whole host of activities that thoroughly entertained the students. Sunday evening tested students knowledge with a quiz night, mixing students up between the schools and getting to know each other, whilst Monday it would be Miss Addison and Mr Graves who entertained at the karaoke before Miss Coggin showed them how to really sing. The hot chocolate and bum-boarding activities on Italy Passo Tonale the Tuesday are always a highlight with some of the staff getting back to being big kids and having fun on the snow. A more sedate Wednesday provided massive pizzas at the local Pizzeria. Before we knew it Thursday evening was upon us and time to pack followed by presentation of ski badges and achievements from the Italian instructors. Throughout the week there were many honoured with the title of Ski Whizz (or Ski Wally), and the progress made by students on the slopes was excellent as they travelled further and faster on the Blue, Red and Black runs, with the top ski group tackling the Presena Glacier Black run with remarkable confidence. Overall, a superb trip with the students being a real credit to themselves and the School. Well done. Letters will be out shortly for Italy 2016! The Year 8 boys team were competing against 4 other schools and we came 3 rd. On the day of the event two of our athletes had to pull out due to injury and illness so we knew it was going to be tough. This led to us having to improvise in a number of the events with each of us competing in the maximum number of events the rules allowed. Most of the events were based on athletics events such as: a range of races, standing long jump and triple jump, speed bounce, shot putt and vertical jump and not once did our heads go down. All of the athletes should feel very proud and can look forward to the athletics season ahead. Jonathan Pitts, 8G The students were given an exciting opportunity to compete in the Lincolnshire School Games Athletics competition. Due to how early the competition fell, we undertook some very basic training at school in the two weeks leading up to the event, and approached the competition as a chance to find some enjoyment in athletics and begin to see what talent and potential the new Year 7 cohort have. They excelled beyond our expectations with both Year 7 teams claiming the title. The Year 8 s had a harder task, with many of their athletes from last summer injured or unavailable. It was wonderful to see other students step up and relish the chance to represent the school. 8 Multi 8 Skills Benefit Year 10 & Primaries Year 10 offers students a great opportunity to develop personal and leadership skills through the Dance Leaders and Sports Leaders programme that we offer. We are fortunate to have a strong link with the local Primary Schools which allows the students to put everything they have learnt into practise through tournaments and festivals which are always good fun, not only for the Primary Schools, but also the leaders involved with running the events. Part of the leaders programme expects students to run an after School session for Primary School students who can choose to attend the Multi Skills Club. This free club runs every Wednesday until 5pm and offers Primary School students the opportunity to try a variety of new sports which are solely organised by the Bourne Grammar Leaders and we have had some great sessions delivered by the leaders. Particular sessions which stand out are those delivered by Daniel Johnson and Molly Marriott who I am confident will have a bright future leading a team or group of people. As we look ahead to the Summer terms the calendar is rather full, with various tennis tournaments, cricket festivals and multi skills festivals fast approaching. These are great inclusion events where approximately 100 students take part in various skills sessions and games solely ran by the Bourne Grammar Leaders. (EJB) County and Anglian Cross Country Championships Following excellent performances earlier in the year, a staggering 50 students from Bourne Grammar were invited to attend the County Championships on Saturday 10 January at Sleaford Rugby Club. The flat course on a bitterly cold morning seemed to benefit many of our students as they were able to judge their pace and steadily pick their way through as many as 70 students in the race on a course where they could see all students in the field. There were some excellent individual performances, in all age groups including Elin James and Lewis Woodfine in the Year 7 races and Hana Ray (Year 8) in the Year 8&9 combined race. Aaron Hunt also secured a top 8 finish in the same age Students selected who represented Lincolnshire at the Anglian Championships: Anglian Results: Year 7 Girls: Elin James Year 7 Boys: Lewis Woodfine Junior Girls: Isabel Spinley Hana Ray Junior Boys: Aaron Hunt Inter Girls: Alice Callcut Inter Boys: Scott Taylor Senior Girls: Beth Howells Senior Boys: Michael Cawood group, whilst Scott Taylor finished in the top 12 to gain his County vest. In the Seniors, Michael Cawood (Year 12) also secured a place to represent the County with Beth Howells (Year 12) getting her County vest with an excellent run nearer the end of the meeting. Others who would also be given the chance due to excellent performances in the previous round were: Isabel Spinley (Year 9), Alice Callcut (Year 10) and James McCrae (Year 13). All those named above travelled to Ipswich on Saturday 7 February to represent Lincolnshire against Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, and Northamptonshire at the Anglian Championships. It is the first time that the School has had students represent the County in every race. Once again there were some excellent performances and all who attended the competitions should be thoroughly proud on their achievements, a real honour for any student. Following a number of offers from 1st Class County Cricket Clubs, Patrick Brown (Year 12) has accepted terms to play for Worcestershire Academy for the next 18 months whilst still studying for his A-Levels. He is currently working on a variety of strength and conditioning work to prepare for the season ahead. Lauren Brown has been an outstanding ambassador for the School, umpiring both the Year 7 and Year 8 netball tournaments as well as a number of their league fixtures. She also stepped up to umpire a Year 10 game vs. Spalding and single handily coached and umpired the Year 7 B team vs. Stamford High School. We are extremely proud of Lauren and hope she continues to take these opportunities to develop her umpiring further.
