Mwer Cunty s first Science f Agriculture Challenge team placed 3 rd at the State Cmpetitin in June! Team members included: Megan Silbaugh, Sarah Hecimvich, Hannah Hecimvich, Ryan VanPelt and Kaitlyn Meiergerd. Each team member was awarded a $500 cllege schlarship. Science f Agriculture is a hands-n learning experience t inspire Minnesta yuth. Teams f three t five participants in grades 6-12 wrk with vlunteer caches and mentrs t identify agriculture-related issues in their cmmunities and develp and share slutins. During this time, we will be having ur electin fr fficer psitins. As yu may remember reading abut in the January 2018 Mwer Cunty 4-H Clver Update, the districts f the cunty have been redistricted t get mre balanced membership numbers acrss the districts. Campers spent time swimming, caneing, music, crafts, educatinal prgrams, great fd, cabin life, reflective campfires and mre. 3 PAGE 3 New Family Cunty Fair 101 Orientatin Night Yu have just enrlled in 4-H, ne f the greatest yuth develpment prgrams in the natin, and yu are excited t exhibit at the Mwer Cunty fair. But yu may be asking yurself, nw what? Jin us fr a FUN and INFORMATIVE evening at the Mwer Cunty 4-H Building n Wednesday, August 1 st at 6:30 pm. 4-H Staff and the Mwer Cunty 4-H Ambassadrs will be there t answer questins yu may have related t participating at the Mwer Cunty Fair. We will tur the fairgrunds and have an infrmative questin and answer sessin fr parents. A game f kickball and ther fun activities will be available fr the kids during this time. Sme tpics include: Hw des the static prject check-in prcess wrk? Hw des the animal check-in prcess wrk? What is cnference judging? What is herdsmanship judging? Hw d the State Fair Line-Up bards wrk? What are sme fair deadlines t be aware f (auctin, state fair, etc.)? Rt beer flats will be served. Adults and yuth are all encuraged t cme. Even if this is yur 2 nd, 3 rd year r mre in 4-H, yu are welcme t attend this event! Please register by ing mnextmwer@umn.edu r call by July 27 th. We need at least 5 new families t hld this event. Arts-In Jin us n Wednesday, Aug 1 at nn fr Arts- In. We ll be decrating the 4-H Building! This year s theme is a fun ne! It s a wild west theme. We ll be rdering pizza and pp fr supper. Mwer Cunty Farm Bureau Phtgraphy Cntest Attentin Mwer Cunty 4-H Members: Thse enrlled in the phtgraphy prject will have an pprtunity fr a special cntest this year at the Mwer Cunty Fair. If yu were nt able t make it t the breakfast n the farm, yu can still submit yur favrite farm picture int the fair. The picture shuld be taken in the spring r summer f The picture shuld be an 8 x 10 clred pht. Only ne entry per persn. The title f the entry will be My Favrite Farm Picture. First Place - $25.00, Secnd Place - $15.00, Third Place $ This event is spnsred by the Mwer Cunty Farm Bureau Federatin. LIVESTOCK ANNOUNCEMENTS & PROJECT TRAININGS Livestck Quality Assurance & Ethics Training (LQA) Minnesta 4-H supprts livestck quality assurance and animal science ethics. All yuth participating as a state fair 4-H livestck exhibitr in beef, dairy, sheep, swine, pultry, rabbits, meat gat, dairy gat, and lama must cmplete livestck quality assurance training.

4 PAGE 4 Certificatin is required fr state fair grade/ageeligible yuth. Must be cmpleted befre their hme cunty fair qualifying shw. The training accmmdates multi-levels f learning fr all ages. The level f training required is determined by the grade/age f the yuth at the time the training takes place. Cunties that have a swine marketing agreement with a packer that requires livestck quality assurance certificatin may require swine members (grade 3-13) t certify. Minnesta 4-H yuth must participate in ne f the training ptins t be eligible fr Minnesta 4-H state fair shws. Beginning in 2018, Minnesta 4-H will have tw training ptins: A face-t-face 3-hur livestck quality assurance and ethics training frm Minnesta 4-H. These will be ffered in multiple lcatins statewide. This certificatin is valid fr three fair seasns. Cst is set by cunty/reginal hst. An nline 1-hur yuth quality care f animals training ffered via distance learning. This certificatin is valid fr ne fair seasn. Cst: $12; pay at registratin with a credit card. (This is a natinal prgram and registratin fee pays fr the natinal training system.) Trainings prmte respnsible care f animals, making infrmed decisins in animal care and prviding safe cnsumer fd prducts. Yuth will receive a certificate f cmpletin. Additinal infrmatin cncerning any Livestck Quality Assurance training in ur area will be listed in upcming 4-H newsletters. Will face-t-face LQA trainings be ffered in ur area? 5 PAGE 5 Reminders fr 2018 Livestck Prjects All animals brn after the May 15th ID deadline, ID wrksheets must be turned int the Extensin ffice n r befre July 15th. Any wrksheet turned in after July 15th will be cnsidered a late ID. Just a reminder all registratin papers fr all species must n file in the Extensin Office by July 15th with fair registratin papers. Dg training summer started n May 8 th at the fairgrunds. As a reminder, yur dg needs t have their shts befre they cme t any practices. Bedding Payments fr Beef and Dairy Bedding will be placed in stalls fr all Beef and Dairy prir t arrival; this includes Open, FFA and 4-H animals. This fundraiser is nt pssible withut the help f many vlunteers. A few ntes abut scheduling: A ttal f 10 lder members and/r adults are needed fr each shift and they will wrk between the fd stand and dairy bar between their shift. Fd stand needs 2-3 adults and dairy bar needs 2 adults t supervise the crews. These adults will need t get wrk assignments frm the manager befre there shifts starts. An adult frm the club will be respnsible fr seeing that their crew keeps the dining hall and washrms clean and rderly. The last crew will sweep the dining hall, exhibit halls and washrms, and will lck up the 4-H building at 10:30 pm. Only adults will serve as cashiers fr dairy bar and fd stand. On Wednesday during the Kiwanis Lunch we will need extra servers frm 11:30 1 pm. D nt wear anything lw cut. Fd handlers wrking in the fd preparatin area must wear a plastic aprn, glves and hair restraints hair nets, hats r scarves. Or yuth and adults with lng hair need t have it tied back. Wrkers are nt allwed t eat, drink r smke while wrking in the fd stand r dairy bar area. Hands must be washed after using the restrm, befre starting r returning t wrk and at regular intervals while handling fd. Hand sanitizers are NOT replacements fr hand washing. Hands must be washed befre glves are put n. Change glves as ften as necessary t prtect fd frm crsscntaminatin. Crss cntaminatin ccurs when raw animal fds r their residue cmes int cntact with readyt-eat and fresh fds like fruits and vegetables. Change glves when interruptins ccur during wrk r peratin. Adults must be supervising the cash stand in bth the Dairy Bar and Fd Stand at all times.

Stp by the 4-H building fr a burger and fries Clerking Schedule Each year at the Static Prject Entry Day n Mnday f the fair, representatives frm the clubs help as clerks fr ur judges. They assist with things such as recrd keeping fr the judging, arranging prjects and ther tasks that the judges need help with. During yur upcming club meetings, yur club leaders will be requesting vlunteers t help with yur club s shift. We request that vlunteers be 6 th grade and up. Public Fashin Review The public 4-H Fashin Review will be again held n Friday (August 10th) f the fair at 2 pm, at Gdfathers Stage. Prject members are encuraged t invite their friends and family t attend. Perfrming Arts at the Cunty Fair We are very excited t share the 2018 Perfrming Arts judging will be taking place at a new lcatin this year! This new lcatin will help t prvide mre seating fr ur audience and als will give perfrmers mre space fr their rutines. This new lcatin is als n the same day and lcatin as the public fashin review s we hpe t garner a larger audience fr bth grups! Furthermre, the Thursday night judging was verlapping with the FFA beef shw and ther activities. This year the Perfrming Arts judging will take place n Friday, August 10th beginning at Nn at Gdfathers Stage. Clthing, Fashin Review & Fd Review Judging In 2018, we will be hlding the Fashin Review and Fd Review judging n the evening f Tuesday, July 31st. Judging will begin at apprximately 5 pm, watch fr mre details as they becme available. Preparing fr Static Exhibit Cnference Judging As yu wrk n prject activities and prepare exhibits fr the fair, remember t prepare yurself as well. Because cnference judging includes an evaluatin f bth yur actual exhibit and yur knwledge f the exhibit, yu shuld prepare bth parts f the evaluatin. Think abut what yu learned in preparing yur exhibit, decisins yu made and why yu made them, and the quality f yur finished exhibit. Knwing and carrying ut the fllwing shuld help yu: Prepare yur exhibit carefully and neatly. Knw why yu chse this particular item as yur exhibit and hw it fits yur prject. Knw hw much the exhibit cst in time, materials and effrt. Be able t explain what decisins yu made and why in preparing the exhibit. Make sure yur prject has yur name, club and cunty n it.

NOTE: The fllwing static prjects will be judged the fllwing times: Fashin Review, Fd Review: Tuesday, July 31st, 5 pm, 4-H Building Demnstratins: Thursday, August 9, 4-H Stage Perfrming Arts: Friday, August 10, 4-H Stage When yu arrive at the fair grunds n Mnday, August 6 check in at the Ambassadr Bth (near the dairy bar). When checking in yu will need t tell the clerk yur name and club. When yu are checked in yu will receive a prject fr each club. After checking in, find ne f the prject areas yu signed up fr and wait there t be judged. They all are marked with signs. Yu may have t wait in line t see the judge. Sign-up sheets t get judged will be made fr phtgraphy and crafts/fine arts. It s ur hpe that the judging prcess will g smthly fr these prjects. Didn t get a prject dne that yu registered fr? N wrries, just turn in yur extra entry cards at the registratin table at the ambassadr bth. After yu have had all f yur exhibits judged, yu are free t leave r cmplete yur livestck interview in the Crane Pavilin. Livestck Interviews, Mnday, August 6 th, Crane Pavilin, 3-8 pm What are livestck interviews? 4-H members enrlled in a livestck prjects are asked questins abut their livestck prject in a cnference judging stetting. The member is ften asked abut hw they care fr their animal, hw t prepare the animal fr shw and ther infrmatin t learn mre abut the knwledge f their prject. Wh needs t participate? All 4-H members enrlled in a livestck prject that wish t receive a champin r reserve r attend state fair must participate in an interview. Get yur Grve On! Mark yur calendar t jin us fr the 4-H Dance n Saturday, August 11th frm 7 11 pm at the Crane Pavilin. We will als need sme adults t vlunteer as chapernes. Mwer Cunty 4-H Ribbn Auctin The ribbn auctin will be held n Saturday, August 11 starting at 9 am. The auctin buyer s breakfast will begin at 8 am in the 4-H building. The Suthside 4-H club is serving the meal. Auctin rder: Beef steers, dairy steers, market heifers, dairy champins, market gats, market lambs, market hgs, market pultry, market rabbits, and lama fibers.
