Later n the two-hour speech, Camejo called for "the formaton of a labor party to fght for human needs." He sad a planned economy, democratcy run, was the only hope for the country. Rather than flng an anttrust sut, whch he noted mght take ten years, he would "make companes dvest by law - make t llegal to be n refneres and producton or producton and retal." Udall sad he favors a smlar approach for the automoble ndustry, notng that one company con.trols many competng forms of transportaton. "General Motors makes most of the locomotves and buses, and they even bought up trolley companes." Attackng the Ford admnstraton on conservaton, Udall -. t - charged that "you've got to go back to Warren G. Hardng to fnd an admnstraton as nsenstve" n envronmental ssues as the present one. He asserted that "Gerald Ford doesn't even know what you're talkng about-when you talk about savng the land." Udall advocated a reduced defense budget, statng that "we have 8000 nuclear weapons; one tenth of that would be enough to scare anybody." The US must treat the developng natons, whch consttute three-fourths of the UN votng power, as ndvdual countres wth dfferent nterests - not as a group - Gardner sad. n addton, he proposed that e xstng nternatonal nsttutons be revewed, wth an eye toward strengthenng those wth potental, and that a coalton of Street, Kenmore Square, from Tuesday, March 2 through Frday, March 12. the Gallery s open to the publc on weekdays from 1.Oam to 5pm.. * The MT Concert Band wll present a concert of contemporary band musc at 8:30pm Saturday, March 6, n Kresge's Audtorum. Accordng to ths method, an ssue can be taken out of votng untl the partes nvolved have met wth a charman and reached an agreement. Gardner also proposed that the UN centralze much of ts dsparate actvtes be pulled together nto a central headquarter, that fundng groups lke UNCEF should be consoldated, and that the nternatonal body draw more heavly upon experts n specalzed felds when consderng techncal ssues. The 0 to 12 MT nternatonal affars experts present at the talk challenged Gardner's proposals, askng how nsttutonal changes could be made and how he would deal wth poltcal obstacles nvolved. These nnovatons, along wth the appontment of a senor faculty member to head the program - a sgn of ncreased prorty for the program - have brought about a 25 percent ncrease n LP membershp n the last 18 months. The programn, whch has worked snce 1948 to make MT's research expertse avalable to ndustry, s workng on expandng membershp - and revenues - to counter the nsttute's budgetary problems. LP generated $1.28 mllon n unrestrcted fund support for MT last year, wth an operatng budget of about $500,000. The drve for ncreased membershp came as LP nsttutes a plan to share the revenue ganed from ndustral members wth on-campus researchers. Under the plan, 10 percent of the revenue from new members s gven to faculty and staff' members to supplement ther research fund-g. n return, the researchers agree to partcpate n LP's nformaton gatherng and dssemnaton, ndustral worskhops, and other actvtes. "They (the researchers) encourage menbershp among ndustral corporatons and get extra mnoney for ther students and research projects at the same tme," sad Erc Johnson, an LP offtcer. "Everyone concerned bentefts." The nemberslfp drve also conclded wthl the appontment of' Samuel A. G old blth, U n d erwood-prescott Professor of Food Scence, as Drector of ndustral Lason n September, Goldblth s the frst senor faculty member to head LP n several years, Johnson sad: "He s nterested n several dfferent ndustral felds n the Lason Programn, and thnk the offce's recent record reflects hs actve leadershp." The two changes have apparently had an effect. LP's membershp has grown from 96 companes to 120 frms n 18 months, a 25 percent ncrease. Each company pay~s fee to be put n touch wth MT's $ 160-nl lon-a-year research communty. The program provdes "an easy and convenent channel of communcaton between the two,'" Goldblth sad. "The character of hmt research s such that t complements, yet dffers from, any one comnpany's research. The LP offce provdes several servces to ts members. A drectory of-current research, the only complete summary of MT research programs, s publshed by the LP and s avalable only to members. Over 1800 research projects are lsted n the drectory, whch s updated every year. Also, a lst of publcatons s maled each month to-members lstng 60 to 70 publcatons whch can be dstrbuted to nterested members pror to appearance n the journals. The offce holds more than 20 one-day symposa and halfday semnars on major research efforts at MT each year. The symposa are detaled programs supplyng nformaton about varous felds of research. Presently the program s actvely pursung members n Japan, Latn Amerca, and Europe to supplement the 18 f o regn companes that are already members. "However, the offce has no mmnedate plans for expanson of staff," sad Johnson. "n fact, our clercal s.aff was cut back a short tme ago to ncrease productvty." 61 L.. ~ ~ 111' t.:.a A '~~~~~... Gymnasts edge UVN on rneet's lasl routne By Paul Bayer The MT men's gymnastcs team edged Vermnont to 'n a meet held last Tuesday. Bojan Petek '79, the last man n the last event, scored a 5.65 on the hgh bar to gve MT the wn. The narrow vctory rased' the team's record to 3-5. The meet probably seemed lke a runaway to the spectators as MT bult up a lead of 9.75 on the frst four events. Wes Taylor '76 led the horsemen wth 7.1, and John Felleman '79 took second. The Tech gymnasts also took 1-2 on rngs wth Jon Johnson '76 scorng 8.1 and Jack Smth '76 scorng 6.7. The next event, vaultng, llustrated the dfference between the teams. UVM was bg on trcks as evdenced by the Sukahara vault by Blven whch scored 8.45, the hgh score of the meet. MT was able to wn the event, though, wth less spectacular but better executed vaults. Ths trck-versusexecuton contrast showed up n all events. On parallel bars UVM started to cut down on the MT lead, but Davd Lu '77 took second and Petek thrd to hold the UVM margn on the event to three ponts. So, begnnng the hgh bar event, t was MT up by 6.8. After two scores t was MT by Lu held hs own aganst the UVM gymnast lftng the margn to 1.9. Fnally, Petek's routne clnched the meet. They then travel to UNH on March 7 for the New England Champonshps. m -- By Glenn Brownsten "Hockey madness" begns ths week. For the unntated that don't know what 'm talkng about, t's tme for the annual Eastern Massachusetts schoolboy hockey tournament, nvolvng the top 50 hgh school hockey teams n ths part of the state. There wll be 19 Dvson 1 (larger enrollments) and 32 Dvson 2 (smaller schools) competng n ths year's tourney, and they should provde hockey buffs n ths area wth a lot of exctement n the upcomng two weeks. n the past few years, unfortunately, exctement has not been confned to the local rnks where the tourney s held, but has splled out onto the street, resultng n many ugly and malcous ncdents. MBTA trans have been thoroughly vandalzed by dsapponted, dsllusoned, and ecstatc students ether celebratng or takng out frustratons. There have been bottle-throwng ncdents nsde Boston Garden, and altercatons outsde the North Staton arena. Only two years ago, vrtually all the games were held ether n Boston Arena (the quckly-decayng but stll usable faclty near Symphony Hall) or n the Garden, but the afore-mentoned problems caused the Secondary School Prncpals' Assocaton (the tournament sponsors) to move the champonshps entrely out of the Arena and contfne the CGarden's partcpaton to the quarters, sems, and fnals. Other tournament games are now held n suburban rnks, where the possblty of volence s lessened by relatve naccessblty and school-run transportaton. Last year, the polcy worked, resultng n a general abatement of hostltes, and let's hope the trend contnues. The next two weeks should provde some excellent hockey for local fans, and t's a pleasant, nexpensve way to see -the schoolboy game, whch compares favorably wth anythng here at MT except the varsty. MT's 150-pound wrestler, Gary Spletter '79, attempts to fght off Harvard's Kelly Jensen n the wrestlng tearm's loss to the Crmlson Tuesday nght.-spletter was one of two vctorous grapplers, takng down Jensen wth just sx seconds remanng to pull out a 3-2 wn. r-",... :.Mr,, 1 " w t.,.....
