1 Date: Sunday, July 18, th Annual Viers Family Reunin Time: Weather: 1:00 p.m. 78 degrees and sunny when we started, then it pured rain at the clse f the reunin Attendance: 82 At apprximately 1:00 p.m. reunin president, Dale Viers (Tled, OH), welcmed all t the 98th Annual Reunin. Everyne in attendance held hands as Judy Hinkelman (Elgin, IL) said the 'Lrds Prayer', fficially starting the family reunin and the serving f the fd. After lunch, Dale started the meeting by welcming everyne t the 98th annual reunin and annunced that the kid's games wuld be held utside after the meeting cmmenced. While the games were in sessin, the adults culd stay inside fr the annual White Elephant Sales. Dale Viers then asked that reunin secretary, Tina Viers (Cleveland, OH), t read the meeting minutes frm After the minutes were read, and unanimusly accepted (pending sme minr crrectins), Dale started with the ld business. Old Business. It was requested that returned pstcards be crrected and that everyne sign the fficial registratin bk. It was als asked that we start cllecting s n the registratin bk.. The rules fr the annual White Elephant Sale were cvered. Fr each dllar that is bid n an item, a ticket is issued. When the auctin is ver, half the mney cllected n auctined items is dnated t the entertainment cmmittee and the ther half is raffled ff t ne lucky bidder. Special thanks t Judy Hinkelman, Alice Askins and Miltn Zimmerman, wh helped with 2004 White Elephant Sale by taking cash, giving ut tickets and serving as auctineer. In 2004, a ttal f $50 was bid. Steve Henry wn the raffle and generusly gave his cut, $25, t the entertainment cmmittee t cntinue t buy games fr the kids in A ttal f $50 was passed t the entertainment cmmittee. The White Elephant sale was apprved again fr It was annunced that the grup picture was still available frm 95th annual reunin fr $2.00 and culd be bught at the head table after the meeting was adjurned. 2 New Business Once again Janet Grves (Archbld, OH) agreed t be at the dr f the park directr's ffice n Mnday, July 19, 2004, t reserve the cabin fr All agreed that the reunin shuld still be held the 3rd Sunday in July at the same time. 3 The Henry family was electedas the entertainment cmmittee, replacing Helen Smith 100th Year Celebratin: Dale reminded the crwd that the 100-year celebratin was cming up in 2006 and that pictures wuld be taken. He als asked nce again fr additinal vlunteers t plan the event. Vlunteers nw include: Dale & Sharn Viers, Miltn & Luis Zimmerman, and Tina Viers. Dale then jked that It is "reunin plicy" that a new president be named every 100 year anniversary. The crwd quickly prtested that after 25 years f perfect service, there is n reasn t mess with perfectin, s It stands that Dale will be president until he Is t senile t remember t bring the cffee maker (which tk him several years t remember the first time it was psed). Miltn Zimmerman had sme great ideas fr the 100th reunin. First, he mved t reserve the entire meeting hall in 2005 fr the celebratin. His thinking Is that we will mst likely have a big crwd and will need the space t accmmdate everyne. He als felt it was a gd Idea in case the weather is bad (r t ht), we will be able t fit everyne inside t take pictures. Everyne agreed It was a gd idea and It was decided that we wuld rent bth sides. It is anticipated that the cst fr hall rental In 2006 will be $120. Miltn als suggested that we think abut hlding a talent cntest in 2006 where we actually flaunt ur talent instead f just ur Intellect and perfect physiques. In 2004, Dale Viersnceagain amusedus with this silly, and pssiblytrue, tale: ON JULY 20, 1969, AS COMMANDER OF THE APOLLO 11 LUNAR MODULE, NEIL ARMSTRONG WAS THE FIRST PERSON TO SET FOOT ON THE MOON. HIS FIRST WORDS AFTER STEPPING ON THE MOON, "THAT'S ONE SMALL STEP FOR MAN, ONE GIANT LEAP FOR MANKIND" WERE TELEVISED TO EARTH AND HEARD BYMILUONS. BUT JUST BEFORE HE RE-ENTERED THE LANDER, HE MADE THE ENIGMATIC REMARK "GOOD LUCK, MR. GORSKY." MANY PEOPLE AT NASA THOUGH IT WAS A CASUAL REMARK CONCERNING SOME RIVAL SOVIET COSMONAUT. HOWEVER, UPON CHECKING, THERE WAS NO GORSKY IN EITHER THE RUSSIAN OR AMERICAN SPACE PROGRAMS. 4'3

4 OVER THE YEARS MANY PEOPLE QUESTIONED ARMSTRONG AS TO WHAT THE "GOOD LUCK, MR. GORSKY... STATEMENT MEANT, BUT ARMSTRONG ALWAYS JUST SMILED. ON JULY 5, 1995, IN TAMPA BAY, FLORIDA, WHILE ANSWERING QUESTIONS FOLLOWING A SPEECH, A REPORTER BROUGHT UP THE 26-YEAR-OLD QUESTION TO ARMSTRONG. THIS TIME HE FINALLY RESPONDED. MR. GORSKY HAD DIED; SO NEIL ARMSTRONG FELT HE COULD ANSWER THE QUESTION. IN 1938 WHEN HE WAS A KID IN A SMALL MIDWEST TOWN, HE WAS PLAYING BASEBALL WITH A FRIEND IN THE BACKYARD.
