The Sox opened the homestand last night with a 3-0 loss to the Indians after going 5-4 on their last trip to Cleveland (2-1), Minnesota (2-1) and New York-AL (1-2) from 4/ Following this three-game series, the Sox conclude the homestand with three games vs. Kansas City (4/24-26) after an off day next Thursday, they take a 10-day trip to Detroit (4/28-30), Kansas City (5/1-4) and Baltimore (5/5-7). The White Sox have four scheduled off days in April (one in 2016) and play 25 of their fi rst 28 games within the division. ROSTER MOVES Prior to tonight's game, the White Sox purchased the contract of RHP Mike Pelfrey from Class AAA Charlotte, reinstated C Geovany Soto (right elbow infl ammation) from the 10-day disabled list and transferred OF Charlie Tilson (stress reaction in his right foot) to the 60-day disabled list. Prior to last night's game, the Sox placed RHP James Shields on the 10-day disabled list (retro to 4/18) with a strained right lat and optioned C Kevan Smith to Charlotte following the game. The 40-man roster is at 40. TONIGHT'S STORYLINES RHP Mike Pelfrey makes his White Sox debut. The Sox lead the major leagues with a 3.03 ERA, and the bullpen ranks second with a 1.32 ERA. The White Sox have not faced an opponent this season with a losing record at the time of the game. Sox pitchers have held Cleveland to a.063 (2-32) average with RISP this season. Avisaíl García leads the American League and ranks second in the major leagues with a.400 (22-66) average. LAST NIGHT'S RECAP Corey Kluber threw a three-hit shutout as Cleveland recorded a 3-0 victory over the White Sox. LHP José Quintana suffered the loss, allowing three runs on fi ve hits over 6.0 IP to fall to 0-4 on the season Quintana made his 10th consecutive quality start against the Indians. Anthony Swarzak (1.1 IP), Dan Jennings (0.1) and Nate Jones (1.1) combined for 3.0 scoreless IP in relief. Tim Anderson, Melky Cabrera and Omar Narvaez collected the White Sox hits Avisaíl García went 0-3, ending his seasonopening streak of reaching base safely in 14 consective games. WELCOME BACK, JERMAINE Jermaine Dye, Most Valuable Player of the 2005 World Series, will join seven-year-old Jasper Damiano tongiht for a ceremonial fi rst pitch on behalf of Fresh Start Caring for Kids Foundation. Dye spent fi ve of his 14 major-league seasons with the White Sox ( ), batting.278 (742-2,669) with 164 home runs, 461 RBI and 419 runs scored in 724 games. PITCHING PROWESS The White Sox lead the major leagues with a 3.03 ERA, and the bullpen ranks second with a 1.32 ERA. The Sox have held the opposition to two runs or less seven times this season the bullpen has allowed more than one run only once in 15 games (two on 4/9 vs. Minnesota). Relievers Zach Putnam (8.0 IP), Anthony Swarzak (7.1) and David Robertson (5.2) all are unscored upon Tommy Kahnle is averaging 19.1 strikeouts per 9.0 IP (12 SO/5.2 IP). RHP Jake Petricka (strained right lat) is rehabbing in Arizona and has yet to begin a throwing program. LHP Carlos Rodon (bursitis in left biceps) has returned to Chicago to continuue his throwing program. RHP James Shields (right lat strain) was placed on the disabled list on Friday (retro to 4/18). OF Charlie Tilson (stress reaction in right foot) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list on Saturday. CLEVELAND The season series is even at two games apiece the Indians won last night after the White Sox won two of three games on 4/11-13 at Progressive Field. The Sox are batting.207 (28-135) with a 2.45 ERA (10 ER/36.2 IP) and have outscored the Indians, The Sox were 8-11 against the Indians in 2016, going 5-5 at home and 3-6 in Cleveland. QUALITY IS JOB ONE The White Sox have made 1,259 quality starts since the start of the 2003 season, the second-highest total in the major leagues behind the Mets (1,261) and 54 more than the Angels, the closest American League team. The Sox are 13th in the AL with seven quality starts this season after ranking second with 95 in 2016 and leading the league with 100 in AT THE HELM Rick Renteria was named the 40th manager in White Sox history on 10/3/16, replacing Robin Ventura. Renteria, the only current Latino manager in the major leagues, spent 2016 as the Sox bench coach he brings nine seasons of managerial experience to the position. Renteria was selected by Pittsburgh in the fi rst round (20th overall) of the 1980 draft Cleveland manager Terry Francona (22nd), Oakland executive vice president of baseball operations Billy Beane (23rd) and Toronto manager John Gibbons (24th) were selected in succession later in the fi rst round of that draft.
