The Sox are 0-2 on the homestand after suffering a two-game sweep to Pittsburgh, losing both games by one run. Following this three-game series, the White Sox take a ninegame, 10-day trip to Minnesota (6/22-24), Detroit (6/25-28) and St. Louis (6/30-7/1). Chicago went 0-5 on its last trip to Tampa Bay (0-3) and Pittsburgh (0-2) and 4-2 on its last homestand vs. Detroit (1-2) and Houston (3-0). TONIGHT S STORYLINES LHP Chris Sale is attempting to join Pedro Martinez (9/4-27/99 with Boston) and Randy Johnson (6/19-7/11/98 with Seattle) as the only pitchers in major-league history to strike out 12 or more batters in fi ve consecutive starts (see notes below). The White Sox are nine games under.500 and 11.0 games out of fi rst place, both season highs. Chicago is attempting to avoid its first eight-game losing streak since losing nine in a row from 8/28-9/7/13. The Sox are hitting.112 (13-116) with three extra-base hits, eight walks and four runs scored over the last four games. White Sox pitchers own a 2.00 ERA (10 ER/45.0 IP) with just 37 hits allowed over the last fi ve home games. LAST NIGHT S RECAP Pittsburgh allowed just three hits and completed a four-game season sweep of the White Sox with a 3-2 victory. After Geovany Soto tied the game with a solo home run off Gerrit Cole in the seventh inning, the Pirates answered with a run off Jake Petricka in the eighth. RHP Jeff Samardzija posted a ND, allowing two runs on 10 hits (all singles) with no walks and seven strikeouts. SALE IN HISTORIC COMPANY Chris Sale has joined Hall-of-Famers Pedro Martinez (three times) and Randy Johnson (once) as the only pitchers in majorleague history to strike out 12 or more batters in at least four straight starts (Elias). Martinez (9/4-27/99 with Boston) and Johnson (6/19-7/11/98 with Seattle) share the record of fi ve straight games with 12-plus strikeouts Martinez also recorded four straight starts with 12 or more strikeouts from 6/3-20/97 and 5/12-30/01. Sale struck out 12 on 5/28-1 at Baltimore, 13 on 6/3 at Texas, 14 on 6/8 vs. Houston and 12 on 6/14 at Tampa Bay. Sale is the fi rst major-league pitcher since David Price (6/4-25/14 with Tampa Bay) to strike out 10 or more batters in fi ve straight starts (5/23-current) Johnson (7/31-8/25/02) is the last pitcher to fan 10 or more batters over six straight starts. GRAB SOME BENCH LHP Chris Sale has recorded 51 strikeouts over his last four starts, a franchise record and the most in the major leagues since Hall-of-Famer Randy Johnson fanned 54 from 8/15-31/04 with Arizona Sale is the only active major-leaguer to strike out 50 or more batters over a four-start stretch. Prior to 2013, Juan Pizarro (40 in 1961) and Javier Vazquez (42 in 2007) were the only White Sox pitchers to strike out 40- plus batters over a four-start span Sale accomplished the feat once each in 2013 and 2014 and four times this season. His average of strikeouts in 2015 would break his own franchise record of set last season Sale is on pace to record 262 strikeouts, which would be the second-highest total in franchise history behind Ed Walsh s 269 in Sale reached 100 strikeouts in 12 starts and 78.1 IP, both the fastest in Sox history, breaking his own club marks of 14 starts set in and 89.1 set in 2014 (STATS LLC). UNLUCKY SEVEN The White Sox have lost a season-high seven straight games, with four of the losses coming by one run and two by two runs.
