RHP Hector Noesi takes the mound for the White Sox, who have lost the fi rst two games of this series by a combined 13-3 margin after winning two of three games from Toronto. Following tonight s game and a day off tomorrow, the Sox take a three-game trip to Yankee Stadium (8/22-24) before returning to Chicago to close the month with a six-game homestand vs. Cleveland (8/26-28) and Detroit (8/29-31). Chicago went 2-4 on its last trip to Seattle (1-4) and San Francisco (1-1) from 8/7-13. TONIGHT S STORYLINES Chicago is a season-high tying eight games under.500. The White Sox are looking to avoid their fi rst three-game sweep by Baltimore since 5/4-6/99 at Camden Yards and their fi rst at home since 5/22-24/89 at old Comiskey Park. Paul Konerko plays his fi nal game against Baltimore Konerko is a.291 ( ) hitter with 20 home runs and 68 RBI in 109 career games against the Orioles. RHP Hector Noesi is 4-1 with a 3.92 ERA (17 ER/39.0 IP) over his last six starts. The Sox have recorded three hits or less in consecutive games for the fi rst time since 5/28-29/93 at the Yankees. LAST NIGHT S RECAP The White Sox were limited to three hits for the second consecutive game in a 5-1 loss to Baltimore. Jose Quintana suffered the loss, allowing four runs on eight hits over 5.0 IP. Jose Abreu ended an 18-game homerless drought with a solo shot off Chris Tillman in the fi rst to tie the game at 1-1 the game remained tied until the sixth when the Orioles scored three runs on four hits. ON THE FARM Class AAA Charlotte INF Micah Johnson has been placed on the disabled list (retro to 8/18) with a strained left hamstring. The White Sox have requested waivers on LHP Charlie Leesman for the purpose of granting his unconditional release Leesman was designated for assignment on 8/16. RODON DEBUTS AT CHARLOTTE LHP Carlos Rodon, the No. 3 overall pick in the June draft, made his Class AAA Charlotte debut last night vs. Gwinnett, allowing one run on one hit over 3.0 IP Rodon walked three, struck out three and threw 55 pitches (35 strikes). He is the only member of the 2014 draft class to reach the Class AAA level this season. FOLLOW THE LEADER Conor Gillaspie (7th,.309), Adam Eaton (9th,.304) and Jose Abreu (10th,.303) rank among the American League leaders in batting average this season. According to STATS LLC, the last time two White Sox players fi nished in the Top 10 in the AL in average was 1993 when Frank Thomas (.317) was sixth and Lance Johnson (.311) was 10th. The last time three or more Sox finished among the AL leaders in average was 1960: Al Smith, (2nd,.315), Minnie Minoso (3rd,.311), Roy Sievers (6th,.295) and Nellie Fox (9th,.289). ROOKIE PHENOM Rookie Jose Abreu leads the major leagues in slugging percentage (.596), is tied for the lead in home runs (32) and ranks second in RBI (90) and extra-base hits (62). Among Abreu s notable accomplishments in 2014: 32 home runs rank fourth in MLB history by a player in his fi rst 111 games behind Mark McGwire (40 in ), Rudy York (35 in 1930) and Ryan Braun (34 in 2007) his 90 RBI are tied for 13th. 32 homers are the most by an MLB rookie since Braun (34) and Chris Young (32) in 2007 and second-highest total in Sox history behind Ron Kittle (35 in 1983). Has driven in three-plus runs in a game 13 times this season, the most by a rookie since Ryan Braun had 15 in 2007 and the secondhighest total by a Sox rookie behind Zeke Bonura s 15 in 1934 (Elias). Has compiled 18 and 21-game hitting streaks overall and a 25- game streak on the road. Reached base safely in 10 straight PA from 7/31-8/1, the longest streak by a Sox player since Frank Thomas club record 15 in Attempting to become the sixth player in Sox history to win AL Rookie of the Year honors and fi rst since Ozzie Guillen in Attempting to become the third player (fourth time) in Sox history to lead the AL home runs (Bill Melton, 1971 and Dick Allen, 1972, 74) and the second to lead in RBI (Allen, 1972). PAUL KONERKO S FAREWELL SEASON Paul Konerko is playing in his 18th and fi nal season, including 16 with the White Sox agreed to a one-year contract on 12/4/13. His 16-season tenure with the White Sox is the second-longest with a current team behind the Yankees Derek Jeter (20 seasons). Ranks among the franchise leaders in virtually every offensive category is the club leader in total bases and ranks second in home runs (Frank Thomas), RBI (Thomas) and games played (Luke Appling). The White Sox captain was part of the 2005 World Series championship team, was named the ALCS MVP and is a six-time All-Star. WHITE SOX VS. BALTIMORE The Orioles lead the season series, 4-1. The White Sox are hitting.208 (36-173) with a 5.05 ERA (26 ER/46.1 IP) and have been outscored, The Sox are in the last six season matchups (2009-), going in that span (9-13 at U.S. Cellular Field). The White Sox trail in the all-time series, they are at home (55-48 at U.S. Cellular Field) and on the road (51-45 at Camden Yards). SMOOTH SALE-ING LHP Chris Sale ranks second in the American League in ERA (2.12), winning percentage (.769) and WHIP (0.92) and third in strikeouts per 9.0 IP (10.46), opponents average (.202) and opponents OPS (.547). Sale is attempting to become the first White Sox pitcher to lead the AL in ERA since Joel Horlen in 1967 (2.08) his 2.12 ERA would be the lowest by a Sox starter since Wilbur Wood (1.91) in Sale has struck out 12-plus batters a franchise-record nine times and has fanned 10 or more 16 times, second-most in franchise history behind Ed Walsh (17) his 158 strikeouts are a franchise record through 20 starts of a season.
