RHP Chris Bassitt takes the mound for the White Sox, who have alternated wins and losses over their last six games. The White Sox have seven games remaining this season, including three on the road and four at U.S. Cellular Field. Following this series at Comerica Park, the Sox will return home for the fi nal four games of 2014 vs. Kansas City. TONIGHT S STORYLINES Chicago is 5-3 over its last eight games at Comerica Park after losing 14 of the previous 17 contests in Detroit. The White Sox are looking to win consecutive road games for the fi rst time since 7/24-26 at Minnesota (three straight). The Sox need two wins to avoid losing 90-plus games in consecutive seasons for the fi rst time since Jose Abreu ranks among the White Sox all-time rookie, singleseason leaders in home runs (T1st, 35) and RBI (3rd,105). Paul Konerko is a.288 hitter ( ) with 45 home runs and 153 RBI over 243 career games vs. Detroit. YESTERDAY S RECAP John Danks held Tampa Bay hitless over the fi rst fi ve innings, and Avisail Garcia hit a pair of home runs to lead Chicago to a 10-5, series-clinching victory at Tropicana Field. The Sox took an early lead by scoring four runs in the third inning and tallied a six spot in the sixth Danks allowed two earned runs over 6.0 IP to earn his 10th win he issued three walks before surrendering his fi rst hit, a one-out double to Brandon Guyer in the fi fth. Chicago connected on three home runs after going homerless over their previous fi ve contests. Garcia, who went 3-5 with two runs scored, recorded his second multihomer effort (also 4/8/14 at Colorado) Marcus Semien (2-4, 3 RBI) connected on a three-run shot in the fourth. HONORING THE CAPTAIN The White Sox will honor retiring captain Paul Konerko prior to their game on 9/27 vs. Kansas City fi rst pitch is scheduled for 6:10 p.m. CT and fans are encouraged to arrive early. STRONG AT THE START White Sox starters own a 3.12 ERA (34 ER/98.0 IP) in the last 16 games (since 9/5) 12 of the starts have been quality. Starters have allowed two earned runs or less nine times. Chicago s offense has scored just 38 runs in support of the starters over the 16 games (three runs or less 12 times). Is the fourth rookie in club history to record 100+ RBI in a season, joining Smead Jolley (114, 1930), Zeke Bonura (110, 1934) and Ron Kittle (100, 1983) joins Hal Trosky (1934), Ted Williams (1939) and Albert Pujols (2001) as the only players in MLB history to record 30 doubles, 30 home runs and 100 RBI in their rookie campaign. Is the fi rst Sox player since Paul Konerko in 2010 (30/39/111) to record 30 doubles, 30 home runs and 100 RBI in one season. Has driven in three-plus runs in a game 14 times, the second-highest total by a Sox rookie behind Zeke Bonura s 15 in 1934 (Elias). Is the fi fth White Sox to record three hitting streaks (14, 18 and 21) of 14-plus games in a year also owns a 25-game road streak. DRAMA MAJORS Thirteen of the White Sox 18 games in September have been decided by three runs or less, including seven one-run affairs. The Sox rank third in the AL with 50 one-run games (27-23 record) 18 of their games have ended on walk-off plays. Chicago has lost 40 games after holding a lead, the third-most in MLB behind TEX (43) and TOR (41) six defeats have come after owning a lead of three-plus runs in the seventh or later. PAUL KONERKO S FAREWELL SEASON Paul Konerko is playing in his 18th and fi nal season, including 16 with the White Sox agreed to a one-year contract on 12/4/13. His 16-season tenure with the White Sox is the second-longest with a current team behind the Yankees Derek Jeter (20 seasons). Ranks among the franchise leaders in virtually every offensive category is the club leader in total bases and ranks second in home runs (Frank Thomas), RBI (Thomas) and games played (Luke Appling). The White Sox captain was part of the 2005 World Series championship team, was named the ALCS MVP and is a six-time All-Star. WHITE SOX VS. DETROIT TIGERS The season series is even at 8-8 Chicago is 4-5 at U.S. Cellular Field and 4-3 at Comerica Park the Sox and Tigers have alternated wins and losses over the last nine games. ABREU TIES CLUB RECORD Jose Abreu hit his 35th home run in the ninth inning on 9/14 vs. Minnesota, tying Ron Kittle (1983) for the club rookie record. He is just the 10th rookie in baseball history to hit 35 or more homers in a season he is tied for sixth all-time with Kittle, Mike Piazza (1993), Hal Trosky (1934) and Rudy York (1937). Abreu s 35 home runs are the most by a player in his rookie season since St. Louis Albert Pujols hit 37 in Abreu s 105 RBI are the third-most by a Sox rookie. HARDWARE HOPEFULS SS Alexei Ramirez (Gold Glove and Silver Slugger) and Chris Sale (Cy Young) join 1B Jose Abreu (Rookie of the Year) as candidates for American League postseason honors. Ramirez leads AL shortstops in homers (15), RBI (72), extrabase hits (49) and slugging (.413), ranks second in OPS (.720) and is tied for second in fi elding percentage (.981). Sale leads the AL in SO/9.0 IP (10.61), ranks second in ERA (2.20) and WHIP (0.96) and third in opponnents average (.205) he is attempting to become the fi rst Sox pitcher to lead the AL in ERA since Joel Horlen in 1967 (2.08). SECOND-HALF SURGE The White Sox rank fourth in the American League with a.259 batting average (521-2,010) in the second half. A breakdown of White Sox among AL second-half leaders: Batting Average: Abreu (2nd,.360); Eaton (3rd,.347). On-Base Percentage: Abreu (1st,.447); Eaton (4th,.399). Abreu is trying to become the fi rst rookie in history to fi nish in the Top 5 of the Triple Crown categories and the fi fth player in Sox history, joining Joe Jackson (1920), Dick Allen (1972), Frank Thomas (1994) and Albert Belle (1998) source: STATS LLC. The last rookie to fi nish in the Top 10 of all three Triple Crown categories was the Dodgers Mike Piazza in 1993, while Minnesota s Tony Oliva (1964) was the last AL rookie to do so. QUALITY AND QUANTITY Chicago has made 1,054 QS since 2003, the second-most in the majors during that span behind the New York Mets (1,061).
