RHP Scott Carroll takes the mound for Chicago, who are coming off a 2-4 homestand vs. Toronto (2-1) and Baltimore (0-3). Following this series and a day off Monday, the Sox are home for six games vs. Cleveland (8/26-28) and Detroit (8/29-31). The White Sox are in fourth place in the American League Central, 12.5 games behind the fi rst-place Kansas City Royals. TODAY S STORYLINES The White Sox are a season-high 10 games under.500. Chicago is trying to avoid matching their longest losing streak of the season (lost fi ve straight from 6/19-23). White Sox starting pitchers own a 2.94 ERA (16 ER/49.0 IP) over the last six road games. Scott Carroll owns a 3.03 ERA (12 ER/35.2 IP) and.191 opp. average (25-131) in his last seven road games (fi ve starts). Jose Abreu has hit safely in seven of his last eight games, batting.367 (11-30) with two home runs and seven RBI. Alejandro De Aza is (.355) with fi ve doubles and two RBI in his last 17 contests (hit safely in 14; seven multihit). ROSTER MOVES Prior to today s game, the White Sox reinstated RHP Javy Guerra from the Bereavement List (placed on 8/16). Guerra takes the roster spot of LHP Eric Surkamp, who was optioned to Class AAA Charlotte following last night s game. Chicago also sent OF Adam Eaton on an injury rehabilitation assignment to Class AAA Charlotte (see note below). LAST NIGHT S RECAP Martin Prado hit a game-ending single off Daniel Webb in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead the Yankees to a 4-3 win. Jose Abreu gave the White Sox a 3-0 lead in the fi rst with his 33rd home run but the Yankees scored twice in the third and once in the fi fth to tie the game at 3-3. John Danks (3 ER/5.0 IP) received a no decision he allowed his American League leading 24th homer (Martin Prado). Carlos Sanchez recorded his fi rst major-league hit as part of a three-hit effort he became the fi rst White Sox to have a three-hit game within his fi rst two career contests since Craig Wilson and Brian Simmons in ROOKIE PHENOM Rookie Jose Abreu leads the major leagues in slugging percentage (.600), is tied for the lead in RBI (93) and ranks second in home runs (33), extra-base hits (63) and OPS (.962). Among Abreu s notable accomplishments in 2014: 33 home runs rank fourth in MLB history by a player in his fi rst 113 games behind Mark McGwire (40 in ), Rudy York (35 in 1930) and Ryan Braun (34 in 2007) his 93 RBI are tied for ninth. 33 homers are the most by a rookie since Braun hit 34 in 2007 and second-highest total in Sox history behind Ron Kittle (35, 1983). Has driven in three-plus runs in a game 14 times this season, the most by a rookie since Ryan Braun had 15 in 2007 and the secondhighest total by a Sox rookie behind Zeke Bonura s 15 in 1934 (Elias). Attempting to become the sixth player in Sox history to win AL Rookie of the Year honors and fi rst since Ozzie Guillen in Attempting to become the third player (fourth time) in Sox history to lead the AL home runs (Bill Melton, 1971 and Dick Allen, 1972, 74) and the second to lead in RBI (Allen, 1972). EATON ON ASSIGNMENT OF Adam Eaton, who has been on the disabled list since 8/9 with a strained right oblique, is scheduled to begin an injury rehab assignment today with Class AAA Charlotte vs. Norfolk. Eaton ranks among the American League leaders in triples (T2nd, 7), on-base percentage (T9th,.370) and average (10th,.304) he is batting.435 (37-85) over his last 22 games. The Sox are 4-7 since Eaton went on the disabled list. FOLLOW THE LEADER Conor Gillaspie (T8th,.305), Jose Abreu (T8th,.305) and Adam Eaton (10th,.304) rank among AL leaders in average. According to STATS LLC, the last time two White Sox players fi nished in the Top 10 in the AL in average was 1993 when Frank Thomas (.317) was sixth and Lance Johnson (.311) was 10th. The last time three or more Sox finished among the AL leaders in average was 1960: Al Smith, (2nd,.315), Minnie Minoso (3rd,.311), Roy Sievers (6th,.295) and Nellie Fox (9th,.289). The last White Sox to fi nish in the Top 10 in average in the American League was Paul Konerko in 2010 (8th,.312). PAUL KONERKO S FAREWELL SEASON Paul Konerko is playing in his 18th and fi nal season, including 16 with the White Sox agreed to a one-year contract on 12/4/13. His 16-season tenure with the White Sox is the second-longest with a current team behind the Yankees Derek Jeter (20 seasons). Ranks among the franchise leaders in virtually every offensive category is the club leader in total bases and ranks second in home runs (Frank Thomas), RBI (Thomas) and games played (Luke Appling). The White Sox captain was part of the 2005 World Series championship team, was named the ALCS MVP and is a six-time All-Star. WHITE SOX VS. YANKEES New York leads the season series, 3-2 the teams split a four-game series at U.S. Cellular Field on 5/22-25, with the White Sox winning the fi rst two and the Yankees the fi nal two. The Sox have lost six straight games at new Yankee Stadium, including a three-game sweep from 9/2-4/13. Chicago is hitting.287 (49-171) with three homerss, a 3.55 ERA (18 ER/45.2 IP) and have been outscored, The White Sox trail in the all-time series, 813-1,045 they are at home (50-53 at U.S. Cellular Field) and on the road (5-13 at new Yankee Stadium). SMOOTH SALE-ING LHP Chris Sale ranks second in the American League in ERA (2.12), winning percentage (.769) and WHIP (0.92), third in strikeouts per 9.0 IP (10.46) and opponents OPS (.547), fourth in opponents average (.202) and eighth in strikeouts (158). Sale is attempting to become the first Sox pitcher to lead the AL in ERA since Joel Horlen in 1967 (2.08) his 2.12 ERA would be the lowest by a Sox starter since Wilbur Wood (1.91) in Sale has struck out 12-plus batters a franchise-record nine times and has fanned 10 or more 16 times, second-most in franchise history behind Ed Walsh (17) his 158 strikeouts are a franchise record through 20 starts of a season. ANDERSON BACK IN ACTION SS Tim Anderson yesterday was returned from his rehab assignment with the AZL White Sox, reinstated from the disabled list (fractured right wrist) and promoted to Class AA Birmingham. Anderson, 21, went 3-3 with a double last night in his first game with the Barons he was Chicago s fi rst-round pick in He is hitting.301 (92-306) with 19 doubles, seven triples, eight homers, 33 RBI and 51 runs scored over 75 games in TEST VS. THE BEST The White Sox are in a stretch where they play 22 straight games vs. teams above.500 to end August (4-9 so far). Chicago is this season vs. teams with winning records and vs. teams below the.500 mark. TURN TWO The White Sox have turned a major-league leading 133 doubles plays this season, including 36 in the last 30 games.
