LHP Chris Sale, who leads the AL and ranks second in MLB with a 2.20 ERA, makes his fi nal start of the season. The Sox (33-47) are going to fi nish under.500 on the road for the third straight season and sixth time in the last eight years. Chicago will fi nish 2014 with four games vs. Kansas City. TODAY S STORYLINES The White Sox and Tigers have split their 18 games this season both teams have scored 79 runs. Chicago is 6-4 in its last 10 games at Comerica Park after losing 14 of the previous 17 in Detroit. The Sox are hitting.325 (53-163) and have scored 25 runs over the last six games when facing Justin Verlander Detroit s righthander owns a 4.76 ERA (21 ER/39.2 IP) during that span. Chris Sale is 3-1 with a 1.63 ERA (7 ER/38.2 IP) and 44 strikeouts over his last fi ve starts vs. Detroit (5 QS). Jose Abreu ranks among the White Sox all-time rookie, singleseason leaders in home runs (T1st, 35) and RBI (3rd,105). LAST NIGHT S RECAP Miguel Cabrera hit a game-ending, RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Detroit a 4-3, walkoff win. Trailing 3-0 in the ninth, Chicago tied the game on RBI singles by Avisail Garcia (2 RBI) and Marcus Semien off David Price Carlos Sanchez fl ew out with the bases loaded to end the 9th. Scott Carroll received a no decision despite allowing just two runs (one earned) on five hits over 6.0 IP Jake Petricka suffered his sixth loss after allowing Cabrera s game-ending single. Alexei Ramirez went 2-4 with two doubles Adam Eaton was 2-4 after missing the previous two games (family reasons). SMOOTH SALE-ING Chris Sale is 3-1 with a 1.97 ERA (15 ER/68.2 IP), 69 strikeouts and a.222 opp. average over 10 road starts (8 QS) this season he would lead the AL in road ERA with the necessary IP. Sale is tied for seventh in MLB this season with a.165 average (20-121) vs. left-handers (2 XBH, 2 RBI and 6 BB). He needs two strikeouts to join Ed Walsh ( , 10-12), Tom Bradley ( ) and Javier Vazquez ( ) as the only pitchers in club history to record 200 in consecutive seasons. Sale is attempting to become the fi rst Sox pitcher to lead the AL in ERA since Joel Horlen in 1967 (2.08). HONORING THE CAPTAIN The White Sox will honor retiring captain Paul Konerko prior to Saturday night s game vs. Kansas City fi rst pitch is scheduled for 6:10 p.m. CT and fans are encouraged to arrive early. STRONG AT THE START White Sox starters own a 2.82 ERA (35 ER/111.2 IP) in the last 18 games (since 9/5) 14 of the starts have been quality. Starters have allowed two earned runs or less 11 times. Chicago s offense has scored 40 runs in support of the starters over the 18 games (three runs or less 14 times). Has driven in three-plus runs in a game 14 times, the second-highest total by a Sox rookie behind Zeke Bonura s 15 in 1934 (Elias). Has earned the following American League honors: All-Star; April and July POM; April, June and July ROM; co-pow (4/21-27). Is the fi fth White Sox to record three hitting streaks (14, 18 and 21) of 14-plus games in a year also owns a 25-game road streak. PAUL KONERKO S FAREWELL SEASON Paul Konerko is playing in his 18th and fi nal season, including 16 with the White Sox agreed to a one-year contract on 12/4/13. His 16-season tenure with the White Sox is the second-longest with a current team behind the Yankees Derek Jeter (20 seasons). Ranks among the franchise leaders in virtually every offensive category is the club leader in total bases and ranks second in home runs (Frank Thomas), RBI (Thomas) and games played (Luke Appling). The White Sox captain was part of the 2005 World Series championship team, was named the ALCS MVP and is a six-time All-Star. WHITE SOX VS. DETROIT TIGERS The season series is even at 9-9 with Chicago going 4-5 at home and 5-4 at Comerica Park in 2014 the White Sox are looking to win their second consecutive series in Detroit. The Sox are hitting.268 with 14 homers and own a 4.10 ERA (72 ER/158.0 IP) both teams have scored 79 runs. This series marks Paul Konerko s fi nal games vs. the Tigers he leads active players with 45 HR and 152 RBI vs. Detroit. The Sox have lost each of the last four season series, going since 2010 (15-28 mark on the road). Chicago trails in the all-time series, 1,023-1,055 it has gone at home ( at U.S. Cellular Field) and in Detroit (69-66 at Comerica Park). BOUNCE BACK IN THE MOTOR CITY The White Sox are 6-4 in the last 10 games at Comerica Park they are hitting.284 ( ) with nine homers and 50 runs scored (5.0 R/G) and own a 4.38 ERA (38 ER/78.0 IP). FIGHTING AT THE FINISH The White Sox are in September and attempting to record their second winning month in 2014 (14-12 in July). By contrast, Chicago went 7-21 with a.236 average ( ) and 4.56 ERA (125 ER/246.2 IP) in September The White Sox have not fi nished above.500 in September/ October since going in ABREU TIES CLUB RECORD Jose Abreu hit his 35th home run in the ninth inning on 9/14 vs. Minnesota, tying Ron Kittle (1983) for the club rookie record. He is just the 10th rookie in baseball history to hit 35 or more homers in a season he is tied for sixth all-time with Kittle, Mike Piazza (1993), Hal Trosky (1934) and Rudy York (1937). Abreu s 35 home runs are the most by a player in his rookie season since St. Louis Albert Pujols hit 37 in He ranks third all-time among Sox rookies with 105 RBI. DRAMA MAJORS Fifteen of the White Sox 20 games in September have been decided by three runs or less, including eight one-run affairs. The Sox rank third in the AL with 51 one-run games (27-24 record) 19 of their games have ended on walk-off plays. Chicago has lost 40 games after holding a lead, the third-most in MLB behind TEX (43) and TOR (41) six defeats have come after owning a lead of three-plus runs in the seventh or later. QUALITY AND QUANTITY Seven of the White Sox last eight starts have been quality. Chicago has made 1,056 QS since 2003, the second-most in the majors during that span behind the New York Mets (1,061).
